: Problems accessing forums with Mac Firefox?
jrmiller 08-11-2011, 09:51 PM Just in the past couple of weeks, I sometimes have problems accessing the forums using Firefox on my Mac computers. I'm using Firefox 3.6.19 on my laptop with OS X 10.6.8. I do have Adblock Plus installed, but it's disabled on jeeppatriot.com. Sometimes when I log into the site, I see the banner images and the adds, but no forums appear. I've logged out and in, emptied the cache and deleted all the cookies containing 'jeeppatriot'. The weird thing is that sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. It works fine in Safari (which I'm using now).
I just checked my iMac running OS X 10.7 and Firefox 5.0.1, also with Adblock Plus (also disabled), and it too is not showing any of the forums, just the banner and ads. Any clues? Thanks.
JeepFan 08-11-2011, 10:01 PM I also see this problem and somilar problem on other site when using the newest version of some browsers. Older versions work fine. I think someone said it's a problem with some newer Java script or something...
the_jeep_now 08-11-2011, 10:34 PM I have experienced the same problem this week. It hasn't happened before.
Murman 08-12-2011, 09:53 AM Ditto here. The page frame will load, but the guts won't...
Running IE.
the_jeep_now 08-12-2011, 10:19 AM I'm using Google Chrome and it works every other time. Same problem as Murman mentioned.
croat 08-12-2011, 10:24 AM Ditto - on my MacMini (intel based) running OSX 10.6.x using both Firefox and Safari - I get the same phenomenon. I frequent two other vBulletin sites and they work perfectly fine in all browsers on the Mac - except for this board.
Forum works on my PC windows 7 laptop fine in IE, Firefox, and Safari for windows.

Turn on Adblock Plus on jeeppatriot and see if it clears up the trouble. My guess is the ads are doing some javascript shenanigans. It's not a fix, but it'll bubble gum it together until there's a fix
johnnyboy123 08-12-2011, 06:50 PM Happened to me too. Running Firefox 5.0 on Windows XP.

Wow, that did the job! Enabled Adblock Plus for this site, restarted Firefox, and now I can see the forums. Guess you were right about the ads being funky. Thanks for the tip, MM!
Stonent 08-13-2011, 12:28 AM Why are you running like 2 year old firefox?
If you have adblock installed, turn it off and see if it fixes your problem.

Unfortunately, some of the stuff I need to access for my courses where I teach isn't compatible with Firefox 4 or later, so I've stuck with FF3 on my laptop for now, until the system gets upgraded. My bank's website complained about newer versions as well, but they finally seem to be over that. It didn't matter, since FF5 on my iMac had the same problem with the forums. Turning Adblock Plus back on seems to have fixed the problem.
handyman98 08-14-2011, 03:20 PM I have been problems as well the last 3 weeks no matter what browser or OS:
Windows 7 and IE8
Windows XP and IE7
IPad and Safari
johnnyboy123 08-17-2011, 07:11 PM Simple 'fix' I am using (Firefox 5): Go to Tools > Options > Content tab > Uncheck the Enable Javascript box > Click OK.
Go back and re-check the box if you need to use java.
the_jeep_now 08-17-2011, 08:17 PM Any suggestions for Google Chrome?

I don't think it's the forums, it's the advertisement streams. I haven't done any packet captures to see exactly what is going on, but it doesn't appear to be a problem with the site itself.
dixiedawg 08-22-2011, 12:57 PM I use Firefox in here every day, on it right now, never noticed any issues?? On Windows 7 enterprise.
I never even notice the ads slowing things down.
soflatechie 08-22-2011, 01:51 PM I am a web developer so maybe I can offer some input.
1. It is not a browser issue. I have both firefox and IE and had the same problem in both. I even downloaded IE 9 to see if it was version dependent. Same problem.
2. If I refresh the window a bunch of times, eventually the entire site will be shown.
3. This forum is powered by vBulletin, and I go to plenty of vBulletin based forums without this problem.
My conclusion is that it is most likely specific to the advertising content. Much of that content adds javascript to your page that is used for tracking purposes, as well as dhtml. If the code they add has an error or conflicts with the html of the site, it could cause the rest of the page to not render. One example is a div tag without a closing div. I would try contacting your advertisers about the issue. If you can't do that, you may have to eliminate one advertiser at a time and seeing if the problem goes away.
Keep in mind that html is read top-down by the browser, so I would start with the last advertising content that is shown on the page before content disappears, and work your way up.
croat 08-22-2011, 10:58 PM I've just tested this theory on moth my MacMini and Dell laptop - different OS's running both Safari and Firefox on both and yes it is Java related. I have no problems with any other vBulletin message board (even ones in this family) except for this one. I think the site admins need to dig a little to fix this.
jc9767 08-23-2011, 08:11 AM I noticed that is only occurs when there is a Jeep ad, either on top when I'm not logged in or on the bottom, which stops the page from loading after that point.
