I have a general question. I am currently looking at purchasing a 2008 Jeep Patriot Sport 2.4L auto. I would be looking to tow a boat that with the trailer would weigh 2700 lbs together. I found on jeep.com that it looks like the max load is 2000 lbs. I just want to get some of your opinions if this is a good idea or should I look for a different model. I live 5 minutes from the lake I go to 90% of the time, but would like to go to a few other that are about 30 minutes away. I currently town the boat with a 2004 Kia Optima. Yes a Kia Optima. It actually does ok for the most part. I then found a hitch I would like to get for the Patriot. It has a 4000 lbs max load, but I know this is just talking about the hitch itself. Let me know what you think.

You didnt mention if its a 4x4 or a 2x4. I think only the 4wd can pull 2k, then only with the oil cooler. Doesnt matter. Dont do it. You could maybe pull it the 5 minute length, if the ramp wasnt too steep. Thats stressing out the CVT.

The jeep I'm looking at is a 4x2. Could you get like upgraded springs or anyting else to help the load? I know it would be a strain on the Jeep. So should I give up on the patriot then? Even the v6 wrangler is only rated at 2000 lbs...

You need an engine and tranny and brakes designed for that kind of load, I don't think springs have a lot to do with hauling capacity.

The CVT transmission in the Patriot, Compass, Caliber, Outlander Sport, Nissan Rogue, and Lancer does not handle loads very well since it is belt driven rather than gear driven.

I pull a 14' 750 pound boat with my 4X2 5 Speed.
I purchased the 5 speed at the suggestion of the dealer who had every reason to sell a CVT model at a higher price.
The dealer indicated that the 5 speed would manage the small boat better than the CVT.
If I needed a tow vehicle for a boat as heavy as yours I would probably look for something else.
I have had no issues on boat ramps but your boat considerably outweighs mine.

According to Jeeps website, you CAN pull 2000 lbs with the 4x2, WITH the towing pkg. Unfortunately your boat exceeds that by about 35%. The Liberty or Wrangler Unlimited will pull it easily.

Thanks for all your input. I will consider getting something else. or a smaller boat...

how about the 2011 w/ 4x4 and FD II? I thought I remembered reading 4000 lbs but can't find that anywhere now.
