: Creaky suspension on 2009 Patriot
Joel_E 06-28-2011, 02:14 PM So I can't figure it out and I found this site so I figured I'd ask. My wife's Jeep was a fleet vehicle before we bought it. Everything else works great but it happens almost every time we come off the highway or somewhere speeds reach 50 or more. It's just a real bad creak but several shops said they don't know what it is. Any good thoughts?
Nico85 07-10-2011, 02:34 PM Some ppl have said it could be a sway arm bushing could be the source. Mine's doing the same thing on my 08 after getting my ball joints replaced. I just don't know yet
RochPatriot 07-10-2011, 05:12 PM I have the same thing going on with mine(possibly). The Dealership said it was a bad strut but we will see when the part comes in. Hope they can fix it cause it is annoying as hell.
Joel_E 07-11-2011, 01:44 PM when you get it fixed will you let me know? it just confused me cause the dealer said that stuff was fine but i found out later they are the most honest dealership ever. thanks
RochPatriot 07-11-2011, 06:42 PM Just made an appointment for wednesday so either I will post the results on this thread or the "should have listened" thread. FYI seems to be louder the hotter it is.
RochPatriot 07-13-2011, 07:13 PM Ok so the dealer fixed the problem by replacing the rear drivers side strut. There has been no squeaking so far but it is only day one. We will see what happens.
Joel_E 07-14-2011, 11:13 PM Ok. Yeah it does do it more the higher the temp.
RochPatriot 07-17-2011, 11:03 AM It's BAAAAAAAAACK! The dealership managed to fix the squeaky sound for about 2 days. I am pissed but it's more like frustration. Back to step 1.
RochPatriot 07-27-2011, 08:14 PM So after 6 trips to the dealership to get this thing fixed, the problem is still not corrected. They can't figure it out and seem like they are losing their patience with me a bit. I have been pretty calm about the whole situation but that is starting to change. After investigating on this site a bit more, I came to the conclusion that it may be the bushings. They have already replaced shocks and control arms I believe. I told the guy that some owners have stated that they have had bushings replaced or lubed and that seemed to fix the problem. They also told me that they wouldn't replace bushings because they have replaced too many parts already and I might have to live with the creaking noise. I will sell it if that is the case. This thing is getting really annoying and is starting to take up my few days off that I have when I bring my vehicle in. Next time I bring it in they will lube it up and I am sure that will only be a temporary fix if a fix at all...
jbarstow 07-27-2011, 10:27 PM i have had that same very issue with my 07 - constant noise - i gave up on it and found piece with penetrant oil with anti seize - hushes it for four days - thinking about going with aftermarket sway bar bushings - think it could be my struts as well - offroad n stuff and have 125k on mine... guess im tollerant...
RochPatriot 07-28-2011, 11:29 PM My vehicle has 17,000 miles 2010 model year. I thought about getting the poly bushings but I doubt they would install any non mopar parts which appear to be the problem. this isn't over but we are both running out of patience with each other I am sure.
Joel_E 07-30-2011, 12:54 PM Haha wonderful.
RochPatriot 08-29-2011, 08:07 PM So here is an update. After bringing the Patriot to the dealership one more time, they finally have seemed to fix the groaning/squeaking sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. They had it for 3 days. I had suggested to them that it may be the bushings(thanks to suggestions from this site) but they didn't want to check that for some reason. After investigating the parking brake wire which was suspected of rubbing against something and making the noise, they started replacing the bushings. If only they had listened 2 or 3 trips ago. Anyway, it is only day one so I will keep my fingers crossed. I am happy again for now.
uscp7 08-30-2011, 06:08 PM Great thread to read. Went into the shop with a torn inner cv boot on driverside front wheel and came away with issues of: replace axle, replace lower control arm bushing, rear tires, rear brake pads, alignment...blah blah blah. Dealership wants $835 to replace lower control arm bushing. I asked what the problem was and he said the bushing is completely worn. Is it possible to just get the bushing replaced? I'm assuming that would be a lot cheaper. I asked the dealer and he said they only replace the whole arm. Kinda like when he told me they don't replace just the brake pads, they like to replace the whole brake and its parts. Ripoff.
Afmcronnie 08-30-2011, 10:50 PM I dont think that bushing is replacable in the control arm. Someone may have found a way, though. I thought I read a guy in Europe figured it out. Got the parts here in the states, I think. Do a search on the subject.
audio-neon 08-30-2011, 11:15 PM Chrysler/Mopar doesn't sell the bushings or ball joints separately, starconnect shows it as one piece only... Surprisingly chrysler doesn't average that many control arms per week, I'll probably need sway bar bushings too though.

There is a thread where some people replaced the crappy sway bar bushings with polyurethane bushings. Most did it themselves. You are probably right about chrysler selling it all as one part. Search polyurethane bushings and it is the first thread to come up (with pics)
NorthernCalifornia 09-21-2011, 01:23 PM Interesting reading, my 2010 FWD Patriot has this creaking sound too. I bought it brand new last Sept 30, and have 24000 miles on it now. Guess I will have it looked at soon.
Nico85 09-24-2011, 11:00 AM Great to hear that you got it fixed roch. I went to my local shop and they couldn't hear the issue but said my suspension was weak and needed to be replaced for about $1300.
Took it to my dad who's a mechanic an hour away from where I lived . . . Fixed in 30 seconds. It was a dry lca bearing. He just needed to lube it up.
