What would your SUV of choice be?

Mine would probably be the Toyota 4Runner.

Don't even suggest such a thing. I'm sure if Chrysler fails the Jeep brand would be purchased by someone else and live on.

To answer your question;

1. I would look at a used Jeep or,
2. Possibly a VW Tiguan (although that sounds like some kind of reptile)

If Jeep were to go away which we all know would not happen, I'd go with a Land Rover.

Staying in the same price range, I'd have to say Toyota Rav4 or Honda CRV. Both of which I'm not really very fond. That's part of the reason I bought the Patriot. However, in a not too distant price range, the Toyota FJ. No economic holes barred - Range Rover.

Rover would be my only other choice if I had to buy new.

Since I only like to drive Jeeps, I'd just go back to driving my old ones........and the Patriot.

For heavens sake, lets hope they dont!

I want the Land Cruiser 100 with V8 diesel. (but it costs 200.000,- usd ++ over here - I would have to start saving...)

I have a '99 4Runner, and it is amazing. I have averaged around 20mpg since I have had it, but it just feels big now compared to the Jeep. The only issue I have had with it since I bought it in 2001 was the starter failing on me. I am religious about maintenance of my vehicles, and I believe that is imperative for any vehicle to stay on the road for an extended period of time. I am not a heavy driver as the Jeep is about to hit the 1 year mark, and I do not believe I will break 10k miles on it. The 4Runner has just over 100k miles, which would mean an average of fewer than 12k a year. If Jeep ceased production, I think I would have to go with the FJ, or maybe just go with the Tacoma. Toyota seems a little over priced; I guess you get what you pay for.

I really don't know. our constraints: <20k, excellent gas mileage, sit 4 adults comfortably, cargo area for 1-2 dogs, safe, prefer american made, can carry a canoe, drives nice. The patriot was the only one that fit that! The old vue did as well.

Ford Escape or the NEW Nissan Rogue

In the same category as the Patriot... I would go with the Forester. In lieu of a wangler, i would buy anything but a Fake jeep(FJ cruiser) have driven a few and have seen one ATTEMPT to offroad. So since nothing new would work I would go for a used wrangler or original FJ40. Maybe a nice Defender 90 if i was loaded.

I'd go for a Suzuki Grand Vitara depending if they change that guzzling V6 engine.

2 other auto makers have produced Jeeps. Ford and Mitsubishi. I would hope if all this falls apart for Chrysler, Ford ends up with the Jeep division.

I never will forget how the change over to Chrysler went. Most note worthy to me was the switch from Motorcraft starters to the bendix starters used by Chrysler. The Chrysler starters had that unique gear crushing whine, that Chrysler starters always had since the 1960's. The Fomoco products used by AMC did not. Hearing the big old Wagoneers whine to life, just used to stand the hairs on the back of my neck on end.

The AMC, day late and a dollar short, method of producing cars was just a great off beat company to have around. We need some vehicle Underdogs in the market. Everything is too tested and polished these days.

I miss AMC. :(

I surprised no one has mentioned the IH Scout or the Suzuki Samurai. The Scout outsold Jeep on several occasions during the 1960's.

I agree with Jeepster.

I went many a years without buying a Jeep simply because I did not care for Chrysler. If not for Chrysler going Daimler, I would not have bought a new Jeep.

Ford built Jeeps during the latter half of W.W.II, from '42 to '45. Other companies building Jeeps included Bantam, Willys (which evolved into Kaiser), and American Motors.

My dad said he and his fellow soldiers in the Philippines always liked the Ford built "Jeeps" better. They thought they were a little better built.

Honestly if there was not Patriot probably wouldn't have gotten an SUV period and still had the false hope of getting a Challgenger soon (which wasn't going to happen anyways) LOL. Really, only other one I'd consider would be thr Forrester and probably a used last gen turbo model.

Frankly Daimler is the worst thing that ever happened to Chrylser, heck even Mercedes are towards the bottom of the reliability standings in the luxo market (though from what i understand they are doing better though the C class has taken a lot o hits for it's comparatively cheap interior, sound familiar?). We had a few 90s Chryslers and they were damned near bullet proof and had pretty decent interiors (especially my dad's 97 LHS that NEVER had to back to the dealer the whole time we had it). Daimler took over and tried to cheapen everything about Chrysler and is the prime reason why they are in the trouble they are in. I just hope this Patriot isn't tainted by the Daimler curse since it was a product designed under them.

I can't think of another SUV I'd want to own. But in terms of similar fuel economy, my picks would be...

Suzuki SX4
Kia Soul (coming in 2009)
Scion xB

If I had the money... (not in order)

1) Chevy Silverado Hybrid
2) Dodge Ram (if it ever becomes fuel-friendly)
3) Toy Tundra (if it ever becomes fuel-friendly)
3) Toy Highlander Hybrid
4) Toy Prius
5) Skoda Octavia Scout 4x4 (if it ever makes it to the N America market)

Not really... the Honda Element has been around long enough now, this doesn't really look unusual:

I agree with some of the earlier comments as far as AMC goes. My wife's best friend had a first year 2nd gen Cherokee '84. It came with some V6 dog w/ a 5-speed. My '79 Audi diesel was quicker. LMAO But her Jeep would go through anything given a head of steam. So when I bought my '89, thinking Chrysler would have fixed things by now, I was wrong. Given that the chassis had been lifted over the AMC suspension height and the 4.0L was an instant winner, everything else as far as factory finishing was suspect.
When I picked it up from the dealer I drove it to VT for an easy fall break-in, about 700 miles R/T. Truck was all over the road with steering slack. Turns out the steering rack nuts were never torqued down at the factory.
Also, I explained that the brakes seemed horrid. They checked them and said they were fine. Well, I get my buddy to lift it for me and we find the rear wheel cylinders were rust-frozen, so we replaced them and billed Chrysler.
They have come a long way since '89. Oh, the Jeep went 175K miles and used as a trade-in for my '93 Grand. Even with a serious crash, you should have seen the other car...it ran an intersection and was center-punched. Only $6K worth of damage.
Sorry I digress, how 'bout an old Ramcharger Hybrid? My old '75 Dodge, Chrysler got that PIG right. Guess they knew something about 4Xs.
I do like my new Xcape, almost as much as the Riot.

What did Mark Twain say? "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated"? Daimler still owns 20% of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep. They sold the 80% for an extreme loss. I believe that they would have sold the whole thing it they did not have some hope or interest in their future. One could speculate that the price they sold the 80% for included some agreement that would allow the to buy back the 80% at a discounted price when the bleeding is halted. The increase in gas prices has not helped to stop the bleeding any. I own two Jeeps, a 07 Patriot and a 07 Grand Cherokee diesel. I find them to be two of the finest automobiles that I have ever owned. I have never put any stock in the reports generated by popular car or consumer magazines. My experiences have been very different form what they have printed. Bottom line, Jeep will survive weather they are owned by Daimler or someone else. Therefor I pick Jeep as my favorite SUV brand.
