: New paint job?
Khalil 06-03-2011, 04:27 PM Ok so maybe I am just being anal, but here it is. I bought a '10 patriot last year in October, which means I haven't had it for a year yet. Thing is, I have a few scratches that are annoying the crap out of me. They aren't crazy deep, but deep enough to where the scratch remover I bought just made them less visible. I know that a good paint job costs thousands of dollars, but thats if the car is in bad shape, mine is still pretty much new. Can I get a cheaper paint job at Macco or something for a few hundred and get rid of these scratches? I thought of touch-up paint as well but it doesn't apply flush, I can tell I put it on. Any help or advice please?
tiptronic 06-03-2011, 04:37 PM Take it from me ( An ex Vehicle Spray Painter) there is no such thing as a good cheap re-spray.
Its not the spraying , its the preparation , skimp on that & the whole job turns out a real pigs ear!!
I have seen cheap spay jobs peel off after 12 months.....As in all things , you only get what you pay for!!
todde702 06-04-2011, 01:21 AM Look up a ding and scratch repair place. They can usually fix minor scratches like they were never there without a repaint.
09PatSprt 06-05-2011, 01:33 AM A new paint job on a 2010 for the sake of a few minor scratches? No, don't do it. Unfortunately over time, your going to accumulate some minor scratches and dings. What are you going to do? Repaint every 6 months?
Like previously mentioned, a cheap paint job is like throwing your money away. Try to find someone reputable that repairs dings and scratches if they bother you that much. I would guess that your dealership should be able to send you in the right direction. They usually have someone they call in that specializes in such minor cosmetic repairs for their own new vehicle stock.
leadphinger 06-05-2011, 06:10 PM As so many others have said, DO NOT RESPRAY your car over a few scratches, especially some cheap zero prep job at Earl's or Make-Oh. If you can't stand the scratches you're really going to hate all the fish-eyes, runs, and overspray from a bargain body shop.
It's a Jeep, ergo it will get scratched up in the course of performing it's duties. Admittedly I bought my Patriot NEW and have been amazed at how easily the finish can be damaged. Just get some high quality rubbing compound from your local auto parts store and take your time, apply and buff, then re-apply and buff until satisfied. Finish it off with a coat of wax to help protect the paint and be prepared to repeat the process often.
FYI: Mine is black so every little scratch or ding shows big time. The eleven year old Mercedes I owned before this had far better paint after a decade of abuse than this jeep will probably have after 2 years but it also cost twice the price of the Riot.
dixiedawg 06-06-2011, 09:49 AM Those scratches are called "Jeep pin-striping" and are supposed to be there after you have one for awhile.
If they really bother you, go to the best body shop in town and have them give you an estimate. Doubt you will need to repaint the whole thing, just some minor repair.
Khalil 06-27-2011, 11:48 AM Sorry for the late response, but I forgot I posted this.
Yeah, this is my first new car and I was kinda freaking out. They aren't bad at all tho, just me being crazy. Thanks everyone
Terasec 06-27-2011, 01:31 PM sounds like me,
when i had my first new car,
spent good money painting minor dings,
after the first year or so,
i started using factory touch up paint,
can either come in marker type, or spray can,
its an exact match, mopar touch up paint from the dealer,
helps with minor dings, especially on bumper and such,
for tiny spots i would split a match in half and use it as a brush
also if your parking in the city and get lots of dings on rear bumper i would get a hitch with a bar/hitch step on it,
tow hooks on the front help protect front bumper :)
