Car magazine (UK) has a review of the diesel Jeep Compass. I would imagine this means the Patriot will be getting a diesel, although I don't think the chances are too good that it'll make it to the US.

Nice - I'm really hoping that the diesel engine makes its way into the MK platform -> Think of all the extra torque to help the CVT move along...

The diesel probably has too much torque for the CVT to handle, hence the 6-speed manual. But yeah X2 on the

Yeah, I just read the other thread in the General section about the CTV - too bad. But I bet it's fun to row 6 gears.

I think the CVT may be getting a bad rap from reviewers who are not used to CVT. The transmission is designed to allow the engine to rev in the higher area of 3000 rpm while driving for better efficiency, while the effect of not feeling shift points can make a person not used to the car feel it is underpowered. I know that there is a bit of adjusting one needs to do to feel comfortable with the car. I have also read that the engine is detuned by the computer during the break-in period to keep stresses down as the engine "settles in" All of these things may make a CVT driver think he has a pig on his hands. My advice is to just take things easy for the first 1,000 miles, get the oil and filter changed, and then see how she feels. Personally I would prefer a five or six speed transmission, but my wife cannot drive a stick. I am planning to order a trail rated 08 Patriot sometime during the summer and I promise to give a performance report after that 1,000 mile point.

Hi All,

I'm from Australia and own a Jeep Compass MK CRD (Turbo Diesel 6-spd Man.), apparently they are not available in the US due to fuel emmission policies/restrictions? I've had my MK CRD for over a month now, and I simply love it.

Interestingly in the low rev range (below 1,500RPM) - throttle response is somewhat average. But simply push down on the gas, and the turbo just takes it away. I'm not sure what it's like with the CVT, but with the CRD - as you familiarise with how the car reacts to your throttle use, it becomes a very fun car to drive.

Maybe it is the engine breaking in, but i'm sure the throttle response has improved since I first bought it...not sure yet

My average fuel consumption (city driving) is 7.7L/100KM or 30.5MPG.

I think the car isn't available to the people in the U.S. because most here weren't used to paying very much money for gas prices. Now that the prices of gasoline is raising pretty fast over here the general public is looking for ways to get more kilometers for the money...

I know there are rumours of a CRD coming to the states but we'll see.

I like the idea of the 'running in period'.
I've done 195 miles in mine so far and it does seem more willing as the miles stack up- the torque and power is great and seems to be getting better.
The rev range is short (as on most diesels) and you have to change gear quickly and smoothly to retain good progress as the Pat is heavy and so momentum goes against you.
I had a bit of a race with a Caliber last night on a dual carriageway, it must have been a CVT as I left it in a cloud of diesel dust from the roundabout, however when we approached the next roundabout I let it go as I wasn't risking flipping my Pat over lol !
I love all these American cars over here now! I like the Dodge Avenger !!

Bozzy,

Can you tell me what your taching (RPM's) @ 10 KM Per Hour? I'd like to know the difference between the CRD and the Petrol. I really like the Patriot but she needs a lower 1st gear to crawl. I'm thinking the 6 Speed in the CRD will have more low end torque in 1st gear to allow it to crawl slower over rough sloping terrain rather than have to put the hammer down to keep the RPM's up so it can make it to the top of the hill. This ride needs a Trail Rated 6 Speed Manual, not sure why they didn't do that?

Thanks for the info Bozzy.

Hi there, next time I am out in it I will check it out. I'd say in general diesels are more torquey than petrols though.
I was in 4th the other day going up an 8% incline (approached at 35 mph)and it pulled all the way up and actually accelerated to 60mph by the time I reached the peak a few hundred yards later

I'd trade my PAT in for a CRD in a heartbeat.............if I could

I need that 42.5 MPG + Torque + 6 Speed = Long Term Ownership

I would love a 6 speed, or overdrive on the 5 speed. My only comment on the 5 speed is that it revs high, like 3000RPM @ 110km/hr, me thinks final drive on the highway should be a more like 2500RPM @ 110km/hr, this would be more fuel wise and give better fuel economy on the 5 speed.

After 7200km my overall average consumption is 10.9L/100kms
