What is that stuff? depending on what it is clay bar not might be the best to get it "perfect" clean.

So as you can see it is not 100%. But it is an improvement. The hood saw the greatest improvement.

But this is the first time I have attempted to remove the rail dust. I am trying little bits at a time and I have noticed an improvement, but it is a never ending battle since I still live by RR tracks. I may have to spend a whole day getting the Jeep completely clay scrubbed and waxed; or take it in for some serious detailing work to get exceptional results.

I am using the Mother's brand clay bar kit. I have tried Bug and Tar remover with worse results. I just need to spend more time out there which is hard with a baby ;).

When I got my Patriot it had some dust on it which came off with clay bar. You have a terrible situation because you are going to get covered in RR dust constantly. I know that the dust embeds itself in the paint so maybe if you clay it to get all the dust off and than apply a couple heavy coats of a good quality wax, then maybe the dust won't embed, and when you do a regular wash the dust will clean off like dirt or mud. I haven't had any experience with regular rail dust, lets see what others say?

Thats kind of what I am hoping. If I can get the paint to a good clean surface, wax it well, hopefully the dust will not be so hard to get off.

Wow. How the hell did your car get like that? You avoid this by washing it ONCE a week, no matter what. Even if you know it's going to rain on Sunday and the only day you can wash it is Saturday, you better wash it. Washing it once a week prevents things from adhering to the paint. Also, after washing and drying, you should run your hand across the entire vehicle and if there is a spot that isn't smooth, use the clay bar.

I've had my Riot for about 8 months now, and it still looks like it never left the factory floor. This is despite a HARSH winter and constant rain. In the end, a little elbow grease saves you trouble down the road.

Another option, especially if you're smart enough to hand wash your car, is to buy a GOOD quality CUSTOM fit car cover. Trust me, it'll prevent dust, bird crap, acid rain, and snow from getting all over your car. Now that it's summer, and the rain has finally slowed down, I just have to wash my car once every two weeks, use quick detailer on it daily, and keep it covered when it's at home. Mirror shine, every time.

You can definitely get the rest of that off with the clay bar. I know I said in another post to not rub hard unless necessary.... well this is the necessary I am talking about. After using the clay bar you shouldn't see any of those specks in the paint.

Focus on that one spot and rub (not too vigorously) until it is all gone. Make sure you wax it when done.

I have the same problem I live 1 street away from a rail yard but I can't believe that much dust is kicked up I think its more the brakes and partials in brake dust I think I am going to install brake liners keeps the dust from coming through the wheels a guy at work uses them works great he said just spent 5 hours and got half a door done I have tried everything noting will totally remove these things tried so far

Clay bar
Cleaner wax McGuires
Bug Tar remover
plastic scratch remover.cleaner(best so far but still not great)
Mineral spirits
Gasoline
I don't want to wax it and seal the spots in forever I don't understand how they got their when I first got the car it was washed waxed every week until winter so now I feel some may have been sealed in.

Yeah, I have put the claybarring on hold because I have realized I am essentially trying to stop a sinking boat with a thimble. I need time and a place to do the whole vehicle and wax the SH#$ out of it to protect the actual paint surface. Not sure where or when I can do this, but I have contemplated just getting a detailer to do it. But I am guessing that would be $$$$

It's best to keep a fresh coat of wax on your Jeep. The wax keep contaminates from adhering to the finish. You should wax at least every three months. The use a quick wax (I use all Meguires products) at least monthly to keep the surface smooth.

I traded of my 2000 Cherokee with way over 100,000 miles and the dealer was impressed with the finish, all original paint except the grill. (But we won't talk about that)

But it helps if you have OCD. LOL

I dont have little ones anymore, those fellas are maintenance intensive, as are their moms! I have to go outside to smoke, so I use the Quick Detailer all the time. The clay bar does work better on the stubborn spots if you apply more pressure. If that doesnt work you can try one of those drill attachments with the rubber pad and a bonnet, with a small amount of cleaner wax. Rubbing compound as a last resort. Be careful with that stuff.

I was skeptical of the clay bar until I got bug bombed going to and from NY in July... Mother's did the job spledidly with a bit of elbow grease :)

I use WD40 for tar and bugs, works well especially on the tar, wipes right off. Have you tried WD40 on those spots? It doesn't remove the wax, and I always have a good coat of wax on the Jeep. I'm just curious as to if it will work on those spots?

I think I would invest in a car cover, or maybe a carport if in your situation.

If you have problems with rail dust try a product called IronX. It will actually dissolve the iron particles and is safe for paint! Make sure you use it as directed, though.

That Iron x stuff looks like its just what you're looking for. I never heard of it, but it looks like the hot-ticket for rail dust. I be carful with it...
