...with the A/C on and with a CVT? Filled up today and it was 18 mpg. VERY troubling to me. A 4 cylinder should get better mileage...or so you would think. I mean, I don't have 4X4, but I do run the A/C. If you think you can go without A/C in Western KY, when the temp is 95 with 100% humidity, more power to ya. So can it be done???

My first tank in the Pat netted me 21.7mpg, the next week was damp and rainy so I ran with the defrost (which cycles the A/C) on just about the entire tank. I got 18.8mpg on that one, but I wasn't babying the gas pedal either or doing the neutral rolls and long stops so I think it may be possible. Anything is a huge improvement for me though since my Dakota 5.9L got 12-13 around town A/C off and babying the gas pedal. It's best highway was 17.2 mpg...so that fact I can do A/C on in the city @ > 18mpg is just wonderful to me!

We can get 25 on the highway. I do know that for sure. However, I could get 19 in the city in our former car. It had a 3.8 V6 with 200 hp and would do it with the air on. I am sorely disappointed.

To put it into real terms, The drop in mileage and extra gas makes it a little under 2 dollars* a day to run the A/C. I'll just buy one less coffee at the convience store for the day (I usually get the 24 oz ones!).

*21 MPG x 13.5 GALS = 283.5 mi
18 MPG x 13.5 GALS = 243 mi
Difference = 40.5 mi or roughly 2 gals
2 Gals @ $4 = $8.00 / 5 days = $1.60 per day

I'm sure your mileage will improve with a few thousand miles on the vehicle. It was 4500 miles before my mpg leveled out.

Even a 1000 miles makes a big difference. GenXer, I'm sure as much as you are here, you have seen the "don't rev above 2000" advice and keep your eyes far ahead so you don't waste fuel and brakes powering ahead to a stop. Just those 2 simple driving modifications will net you several MPG. Did you get the manual or the auto? I noticed when driving the Compass with the CVT I really have to watch the tach so I don't exceede 2K. In the patriot with the manual, not so much, I can do it by ear now pretty well. Also, if you can afford it, get a scangauge2. They cost 160 bucks, but with gas this expensive, I'd say, once you learn to use it, it will pay for itself in about 3 months. It will teach you in short order when you are wasting fuel and when you are saving it. When to shift into neutral and coast to a stop. All that nummy fuel saving stuff!

Now, if you think you are going to get that kind of mileage in the start and stop world of delivering mail, you gotta think again. ;)

It's been mentioned on here before about whether or not you're fueling up at a pump that has 10% ethonal added or not. I Was filling up at a particular Exxon cause it was the cheapest gas in town even beating out a Wawa across the street, but thought it was watered down since my millage was a lot lower than normal. Went to fuel up there yesterday and they had installed all new pumps with a huge yellow sticker saying 10% ethonal.

I have been recording fuel economy on the Patriot since the first fill. See the thread below:

Updated Real Life Fuel Economy Figures (http://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/showpost.php?p=75409&postcount=1)

Keeping the RPM below 2000 (2500 at the most) makes a substantial difference.

Ditto on the Scangauge- It will pay back quickly with gas the price it is today. My mileage has increased considerably and even with ac on I am getting 24 (Us). I have CVT and 4x4.

I haven't done a full highway trip yet, so I only have my averages so far for city driving with some small amount of highway. I can't wait to take my next trip up to the Poconos to see what she'll do on the open road! :D

Wait, unless those are your city mileage figures!?! :wow:

I get between 20-21 with city driving here. I would get better mpg if there weren't so many hills, but that's what I get for living in New England.

No. That is about 15% in town and 85% rural, 45 to 60 MPH highway driving. Coasting down hills, never reving over 2K. If I really make a concentrated effort I can get a little better, but it is too much work and not worth it. I use some of the basic hypermiling techniques without getting foolish about it.

You should start seeing better mileage after your first oil change, 3K miles. It usually takes at least that long for you and you MK to be assimilated to each other. The A/C hurts a little and so does the 10% ethanol, about 1/2 mpg in mine. Worse yet are 50mph+ winds. Just don't "drive it like you stole it". :D

The Patriot I just ordered better get better than 20 mpg. I just took it in the shorts trading in my 2007 Tahoe that gets 17 mpg. I was hoping for more like an average 25

My last tank was over 22mpg of almost all A/C and harder driving. Seem I have to keep the engine speed about 500rpm higher with A/C than without for my desired accel rate.

For what another mileage report is worth...

After 25 fills and 9500 km (December 25 to June 10) my 2008 4x4 std
transmission Patriot is averaging 10.8 litres/100 km or 22 mpg.

This is eastern Canada so much of this driving was at winter temperatures.
Haven't used the air conditioner yet!

I hope this improves a little with the summer temperatures but any hopes I had of 30 mpg are disappearing.

I did get my $1000 Green Rebate from the feds though.

I have seen 19mpg in the city, and when I mean City, I mean stop and go, 1 block at a time.
My average is 22mpg city (50mph max speed)
My average highway is 26 @ 75
My average on the way to work @50mph for 7 miles is 29 to 30 MPG :-)

FYI, the A/C compressor runs in defrost and mixed floor/vent and mixed defrost/floor modes too.

My new Limited just came in about 2 hours ago. Took it for a little spin before they detailed it. Has only 5 miles on it. VIC showed 23.9 mpg after I drove it for 30 minutes.

Just filled my 2nd tank and i averaged 23mpg all city driving. Used AC just for ride home from work yesterday (11miles) Keeping it below 2,000 rpm (thanx guys) I am hoping for 25-26 city once i am 'assimilated'. Taking it to NJ next weekend 600 miles round trip, i 'm shooting for 26-27mpg, although it gets hilly on 287, we'll see! How will the Scangauge help with MPG ?

I am very happy with our highway mileage, but I cannot get a handle on the 2k rpm or below. When I take off, it is almost impossible to keep it under 2k. When I let off to keep it under 2, it drags it's ass like 20 y/o dog. By then I have people tailgating me.

Gramps
06-10-2008, 08:44 PM
I tend to try and keep mine to about 2.5K up until about 35mph or so. I do have some hills on the way to and from work that I generally take it up to 3K. My mpg is around 23 mpg, not as good as some but it suits me and I don't get run over either.

I'm managing about 20mpg. And I've taken the steps of keeping it at about 65mph on the freeway, easy acceleration, using cruise and pacing myself for lights. I drive about 18-20 miles per day, half of that freeway and half streets.

I haven't really had any "open" freeway driving experiences in the Pat...just a couple of jaunts down the freeway once or twice for an hour or so.

Major road trip coming up next week with the family - will see some mountain driving and lots of freeway driving. Taking the Pat in for 6000 mile service this Friday to get ready for next week.

I'm hoping to see a little bit of an improvement in mpgs with the service and the week of open driving...we'll see though.

You folks are getting pretty good mileage. I can creep up on 21-22 in mixed driving in a FDII but I am reeeeeaaaaaallllllly gentle on the accelerator. If I drove more aggressively I think I'd be around 17-18.

It has a display on my instrument cluster (EVIC) that tells you your mileage.

With the CVT, do ya'll still have the ability to coast in neutral? Coasting down with CVT engaged will not give you much rolling distance...but if you can coast down in true neutral it will make a differene. I know my scooter with a CVT (and no way to go to neutral) does not coast down very far.

On an empty tank, fill it up, drive until light goes on, divide the number of total miles i went on that tank of gas by the number of gallons i put in tank. I did this 3 times then averaged the mpg from the 3 fill ups,

BINGO!! I figured this out even on my old Tahoe - made a difference even on that beast! I also believe that's how the CVT is programmed to work. If you watch your tach. as you drive (with a CVT) the computer does it's best to modulate the trans. to keep the engine rpm as close to 2k as possible at all times.

I'm getting 22-23 in the city with my 4x2 Limited with the AC on. currently have about 2,100 miles on it so I expect the mileage to go up a little as the engine and trans. get broken-in.

I got 21.8 first tank after free tank from dealer, 20.9 second tank & 23.6 trird tank that included about 2 hrs of freeway at 70 to 75. I live in east TN where it is quite hilly. Hence the name "hillbilly". I live on a mountain that is about 1,000 ft. above the valley and drive up & down it at least once per day. I have about 1,200 miles on the pat. It's a manual & a lot of fun to drive. I don't try to keep it under 2,000 rpm but do drive under 3 to 3,500 rpm most of the time but certainly not all the time. Push it some & it feels like a sports car.
