: CRD engine broken down after 1000 miles!!!
Smyrnian 06-03-2008, 06:04 PM I just wanted to share my unpleasant experience I've had tonight with you guys.
Finished work usual time, returning home from the office (11 mile journey) I notice thick black smoke at the rear view mirror, I didn't believe my eyes at first, then patriot started to judder, so bad I've had to pull up at a bus stop and call Jeep Assistance to come. It took this recovery guy an hour to come (he probably had his dinner in the mean time, lucky him!) by this time obviously he said nothing he can do because jeep dealer is closed, but he can give me a lift home and take my car away to a safe place then to the Jeep dealer tomorrow.
It's been 3 weeks I've had my Patriot, bought it brand new CRD Limited with just over 1000 miles. I am shocked as well as gutted, I have been so gentle with the car especially at this first 1k miles with breaking in period and all that....
Hopefully I will hear from Jeep dealer tomorrow and will let you know what's wrong with the car.
In the mean time, watch this space.
Greenman 06-04-2008, 10:23 AM Sounds like the Turbo may have packed in could be wrong though.
Smyrnian 06-05-2008, 05:08 AM That's what I thought at first but Jeep dealer called me this morning and they said "a pipe goes to intercooler has come off from the bottom of the engine"... Is this normal for an engine just covered 1000 miles?
The dealer said this is a mechanical issue and they are going to replace the pipe. I love my patriot, lovely to drive but I must say this incident put a little dampener for me...
I'm planning to drive to France in two weeks time and now I am thinking is this car reliable for this journey? Time will tell I suppose!
Greenman 06-05-2008, 06:53 AM I would not worry about it mate mines going in for new disc's on Monday and I have only covered 1,300 miles. Its just one of those things and believe me as a mechanic it can happen to any new vehicle at any time enjoy your trip and don't worry about it.:smiley_thumbs_up:
festerw 06-05-2008, 07:30 AM Could have been something as simple as a loose clamp with the amount of boost pressure it just slowly worked itself off. The black smoke is from all the excess diesel being dumped into the engine to account for the boost that should have been there.
IMO a bummer but in the long run nothing to be concerned about.
EuroPat 06-05-2008, 07:30 AM Engine broken after 1000 miles? New discs needed after 1300 miles? Those things doesn't sound normal. Are you sure it can happen to any new vehicle? I own a CRD, too, and hearing this stories worries me.
Aus Patriot 06-05-2008, 07:41 AM It sure can EuroPat. No matter if your vehicle is 10 min old or 10 years old.
e.g. The KJ CRD's MY05's were blowing hoses of like there was no tomorrow.
The KJ's, also like ours and others that I know in Aus the rotor's were going before 10,000km. Ours went at 5,000km.
Our VW Jetta TDI with the same engine as the MK, one moring I found a small drop of oil on the floor at 5000km. Took it to VW and they changed the bottom intercooler hose. Nope didn't fix it. Then they changed the clips at the end. Nope. They they said the intercooled has had it. All within a month of owing it. 2 days after that the instrument cluster dies. No speedo no nothing. Part orded from Germany, took 3 days. All changed and then 2 years later not one single problem. If its mechanical it can cause you grief.
But these things can and will happed to every brand. But what sets one brand from another in my opinion is the customer service that you get from the service dept.
Problems will arise but its how the service dept helps you that makes a difference.
VW were great no problems what so ever.
Smyrnian,
I hope all is fixed for you ASAP.
Greenman 06-05-2008, 10:22 AM Just to give you an insight Europat,I had a brand new Ford Focus ST 2.5 Turbo charged 5 cylinder (Volvo engine) it could touch 155mph.One day the wife drove to the in laws house which has a slight incline outside she went into the boot to remove the shopping, the next thing 10 minuets later it had rolled away and smashed into an Audi with the handbrake on,Ford did nothing and this car had only covered 2,000miles from new.It cost me through he insurance £1,200 ($2,400) and after that I got rid of it,the wife's New Mini has just had a new electric window motor under warranty so don't worry mate,I agree with Aus patriot as long as the dealer service is good who cares.:)
Smyrnian 06-06-2008, 08:45 AM Hi again,
I went to dealer to collect the patriot this morning, all ok. As festerw suggested loose clamp, hose came off, resulting turbo and the engine not working properly. Dealer replaced the hose, the clamps and they had an overall check for the vehicle.
As it mentioned above, I think the customer service is all that matters.
On Tuesday night after the recovery truck took the Patriot away I had a phone call from Europcar and they delivered me a Vauxhall/Opel Zafira at 9.30 in the evening. Nice touch I thought, especially at that time of the evening they came to my house to deliver the car. Wednesday morning when I was at work I had another call and they replaced the Zafira with Grand Cherokee CRD!!! When I asked why Europcar said this is Jeep's request as per their agreement.
I have been updated with the progress of the Patriot from the dealer in these last couple of days and this morning I collected the Pat finally. I can honestly say I am pleased with the customer service I received from Jeep. By the way, that Grand Cherokee is nice but bl00dy thirsty vehicle!!! :)
Thanks for all your comments.

Aus Patriot 06-06-2008, 08:49 AM Well done mate. Glad your back on the road.
Enjoy your ride.
Cheffy 06-09-2008, 03:34 PM Hi guy's, well you ain't going to believe this, i was driving to work at around 2.5 thousand revs, cruise control set at 70mph, and blow me, smoke starts bellowing out the back, i took it straight to the dealer, and told them that it could be the pipe dropped out from the inter cooler, they dropped me off at work, called me a couple of hours later, and asked me if i wanted a job, as my diagnoses was correct, i told them about the site and they said they would have a look!
what was impressive is they were very efficient at getting things sorted, they also said that they had repositioned the clip on the hose in such away it could not come off and would keep an eye out for the others they sold.
I've bought the car, and now i'm sold on the service, good for Jeep in Northampton!!
Still love the car guys, keep the faith!

Ya, Jeep will only pay for you to have another jeep, great service though I have to admit!!
keithark 07-19-2008, 04:45 AM had exactly the same thing happen to me yesterday , on motorway , stange noise then loss of power, remembered reading this thred before so i had a good idea what had happened. pulled off w/way into garage , 1 jubilee clip ,half an hour . and very sore arms later , all fixed. bad design on this crd unit , dont think my pipe even had a clip on it. just thought i would share, this is obviously a fault on all crd·s ps my pat is 2008 with just 1200 kms ,dont think the pre inspection was done very well!

Hi Keith,
Just read your thread, presumingly your car is still under warranty as well, why didn't you take it back to the dealer or did I read this wrong?
keithark 08-11-2008, 09:48 AM hi, the dealer is 70 kms away and it was friday afternoon, wanted my car for the weekend, thats why, spanish dealerships are very laid back they would of had it for a week ,or more !
