So last Friday I bought a new Patriot Limited 4x4 fully loaded. Saturday, less than 24 hours of owning it, i end up getting in a car accident because some 17 year old cant drive. Now it's gonna be at least a month until I get it back because A) there was $7k worth of damage, and B) since its so new, parts might be on backorder

brutal! i cant stand some new drivers. here in Vancouver BC, you have to display an "L" or an "N" for at least 2 years alerting everyone youre new to the road - "N" being the latter. frankly, all i see these days are brand new Audi's, Hummers, BMW's, Acura's, etc racing down our residential streets. they ignorantly pass cars like its nascar and travel at speeds well over the limit. sucks to know that i share the same responsibility and penalty as them. i read in the paper how a minor with an "N" is involved in an intoxicated accident and only loses their license for a few years, while daddy pays off the criminal fees.

im 28, and boy do i feel like an old man. i tend to drive a tad aggressive, especially when i see the flagged "L" or "N". i would rather be away from the vibe, than feeling the repercussions of a mindless driver.

sorry to hear about you getting your new baby scratched up... and more!

Ah man that stinks! Make sure you go after the insurance company to recoupe the extra loss in value your car will have now that it's brand new and has been in an accident.

Welcome to the site though... Got any pictures of the carnage? How'd it hold up during the event?

srothfuss beat me to the punch. I feel sorry for you and do know how you feel. I took a lady to court once because the "idiot" ran a stop sign and I ended up spinning out my 3 month old RX-7 into a parking lot as that was the only place to go. I managed to stop about 3" shy of a stone wall. She "didn't know". And couldn't understand why I chased after her. At that time I was about your age and the person who ran me off the road was about 50. Stupidity is ageless.

It would be helpful to us to see the insurance pictures. We all need to know how well the Patriots hold up.

Sorry for your loss and hope that the shop takes care of everything to your satisfaction.

What happened was that I rear ended someone who rear ended someone. Some kid slammed on his breaks to make a quick left and I couldnt serve to avoid it because the was oncoming traffic and there was a car in the right lane right next to me. The front bumper was cracked to ****, the grill was pressed in, it was hemoraging radiator fluid, i bent an engine rail, and one of the fog lights was broken. All in all it was estimated at $7K worth of damage. I just about lost my mind when i saw all the damage.

Ah one of those situations... Man that does suck but it sounds like the Patriot help up well considering that you pretty much hit a parked car or one traveling at a much slower rate. Did the Airbag deploy?

I'm glad that you are OK though.

Ugh...sorry to hear about this.

But, think of it this way. You are probably the first person in the world to wreck one of these things. (trying to put a silver lining on this somehow)

Glad you didn't suffer any injuries. I'd be curious why the airbag didn't deploy. How fast were you traveling when it happened?

i was going about 30-35 when i slammed on the breaks. the rear bumper of the Dodge Caravan I it was a lil below my bumper. There wasnt any crumpling of the hood or quarter panels, it was just alot of cosmetic damage.

I'm glad to hear that the airbag didn't deploy. On some vehicles the airbag inflates on minor collisions, when it is really not necessary. From what I understand, it can be fairly expensive to have an airbag reset.

You probably were going under 15mph at impact. I believe Jeep is using a sensor set higher to allow for off-road minor impacts and rough trails.

I'm willing to bet reporters have smashed up a few Patriots in their "testing".

yeah i wasnt really looking at the speedometer at impact, all that was running through my mind was 1) this is gonna hurt, and 2) this is gonna be expensive.

I'd have been seething! Kid would have pissed himself once I laid into him! I personally am of the opinion that nobody knows how to drive except me... and since so many people have that opinion, its no wonder everyone drievs like a maniac!

The thing I am most scared of for when I get my Patriot in is parking on the street. I live in NYC and "bumping" is considered "testing the space"... I am looking into parking spaces I can rent that won't cost an arm and a leg! I know I can't keep the car pristine forever, but I'd like to keep it so as long as possible!

if it makes you feel any better, that's nothing compared to what I did to my 1st Wrangler. she started fishtailing and then hydro-planing while I was on an exit ramp--that ran over the high way I was exiting. I smashed into the cement wall and the front crumpled like an accordian... oddly though, no damage to the engine or transmission... but I broke both axles! It was a sad day... I had put over 100K miles on her though... so we had a good run.

Hope you get her back soon! Definitely go after the insurance company for anything you can--

the speakers sounded great, i listen to everything from Wolfmother to Jay-Z and the sound was just amazing.

So as of right now, I'm supposed to get my Patriot (we call it The General because of the green paint job) around middle of next week. almost 7 weeks since my accident.

yeah! stay away from 17 year olds:)

I just picked mine up on Saturday and had to drive it up the Turnpike. While I was on the Major Deegan going towards the TriBoro bridge, some tour bus decided it didn't care that I was in the lane right next to it that it wanted to be in and started coming into the lane while I was right next to it... I started honking like crazy--it didn't care. Luckily though, there was nobody in the lane on the other side of me so I was able to swerve over--but I thought of you and your story! I would have had mine for about 5 hours when it was wrecked had I not been able to switch lanes!

Anyway, enjoy the driving! now the weather is nice... with the sun roof back, it'll be nice!

That is a little scary - the airbag didn't go off?
Looks like it should have been a no-brainer that it did. ????
