: Firestone Destination M/T or BFG Mud-Terrain T/A???
Boilermaker 05-22-2008, 08:41 AM Does anyone have an opinion or experience running Firestone Destination M/T tires? This one has quickly become my top choice ‘cause it’s lighter than the BFG Mud-Terrain T/A KM tires by 4lbs. You can quickly find both tires on www.tirerack.com by searching for 225/75R16 and “off road max. traction” tires. Note: I won’t be using these for my daily driving.
CJs07RIOT 05-22-2008, 09:36 AM I had a set of Destinations on my Wrangler when I had it and I loved these tires, I am planning to put them on my Patriot after the stock tires ware down a bit more
Walkeraviator 05-22-2008, 10:46 AM I swear by BF Goodrich. I have ahd everything from Radial T/As to G-Force T/As, Long Trail T/A, All-Terrains, and even their new Mud Terrains KM2's.... they make the best tires i have ever seen.... i dont believe i would ever go with anyone elses tires...
DetroitFlyer 05-22-2008, 10:50 AM Go with the Firestones! Best tires on the market, bar none, IMHO!!
79bigmack 05-22-2008, 11:54 AM I heard the Firestone MTs last a little longer than the BFGs...I think they might have a deeper tread too, but i could be wrong. BFG has a better, or more proven, sidewall. Both are good tires!
Post some pics once you have them mounted up! Will you be mounting them on the factory steel wheel?
Boilermaker 05-22-2008, 01:14 PM I actually found a set of used KJ (Liberty) steel rims that I'll be mounting them on. Lift kit and SuperSliders are on the way...I'll definitely be posting pics once everything is installed.
On a side note, I weighed those 16" KJ steel rims last night and they weighed in at 28.4 lbs. When I looked up (through this forum) what my 17" OEM Alloys weighed, members have stated that they only weigh 12 lbs. I find this tough to swallow; does anyone know if this is fact and what the source is?
Walkeraviator 05-22-2008, 02:13 PM i dont doubt it... steel rims are much much heavier than your alloys..
12# for a 17" alloy is doubtfull. I suspect it is more like 20-22 pounds. I don't know anyone that has weighed just their 17" wheel without tire.
TJinWV 05-22-2008, 03:41 PM I have Destination M/Ts on my TJ. I've been pretty happy with them, especially on-road. They don't clean quite as well as the BFG MT KMs, but they have more "edges" for better road handling. They also have sipes in the tread blocks that the MT KMs don't have, although they don't go very deep. I suspect they'd be similar to the new KM2s offroad (in terms of mud cleaning), but the KM2s would have a little better on-road grip through the life of the tread. For a daily driver that's going to see a lot of road miles, I'd go KM2, Firestone, KM, in that order.
EDIT: Just re-read and saw your post about not being daily driver tires. In that case, BFG MTs all the way. Or even look at a Interco's TrXus MT, if it's offered in your size.
EDIT2: Doesn't look like the TrXus comes small enough... http://www.intercotire.com/site35.php (link won't work in Firefox)
bonnzac 06-05-2009, 11:25 PM Boiler: I'm running 30x9.5 BFG MT KM2's on 15" on my Patriot. They are loud, they vibrate the chassis, they drop the gas mileage quite a bit. But, they do look awesome.
UA_who 06-06-2009, 10:11 AM I had the Destination M/T's on my Wrangler as well.
Ditto what everyone else is saying. It's a very good offroa tire. No complaints at all.
ilflyya 06-06-2009, 10:28 AM I have BFG All Terrains and I love them! Since I got them, I've noticed a lot of 4x4's out here in Vegas have them as well. Guess I joined the club.

navy48 06-06-2009, 11:39 PM I ran 225/75R16 BFG M/T's on my Compass. THEY WERE AWESOME! Would I do it again? NO. Why you ask? Two words.....ROAD NOISE. While they were great in the snow, off roading, etc....the road noise at times would become unbearable for my wife. I'm half deaf, so it never bothered me, but the wife? Well.....that's another story.
What I would recommend are the BFG A/T's. Much quieter (had them on my Unlimited before the Compass) and they ride great too.
A friend I work with has the Firestone Destination M/T's on his Ford Escape and he really likes them. Great looking tire too. Don't know about road noise though.
Good luck! :smiley_thumbs_up:
Will H 06-06-2009, 11:53 PM The M/T's are a bit much however they did look cool on Panda's Compass. I'm putting BFG A/T KO's P225/70R/17D on my Patriot. They are new in this size and are 29.6 in tall. I think these will compliment the RRO lift well.

If you have that style of rim they won't work on the front without spacers, but there is another style of KJ rim that does fit, Nebcarlson has the KJ rims that fit.

Tyler-98-W68 06-07-2009, 10:59 PM Are those crager soft 8's in 15" format.
Would be you able to post pictures of the strut towers front and back showing the clearance

Not discrediting Panda at all, but BFG A/T's do produce more road noise than stock. It's all relative. I personally LOVE road noise from tires, especially in a truck or Jeep. If ya want quiet, buy a BMW or Lexus ;-)
Just tested out my BFG A/T's on a 20 mile dirt/gravel road at 25-35 mph while on the way to the Grand Canyon's Southern Rim. I didn't even need 4x4, and I could feel it barely slide a few times. I recommend mud flaps, as I don't have them. I was wincing with every rock hitting my doors, thankfully, there weren't any big dings or scratches.
BTW, thinking of another post, don't know how anyone would want to take that dirt/gravel road at 60 mph! :-)

Question: If all you ever use is BFG tires, how can you be so sure that they are better than the competition? :)

Guess, since I didn't have the A/T's on my Compass to compare them to the Goodyear SR-A's it came with, you may be right.
BUT I know that on my Unlimited, when I replaced the OEM Goodyears with the BFG A/T's, they were DEFINITELY quieter.....AND rode much better. :smiley_thumbs_up:
I didn't even need 4x4
Just so you understand how our 4x4 system works, you never know when the center electronic coupler is locked. Think AWD, or automatic 4WD, as the computers control is and lock it when needed without telling the driver.

bonnzac, that is so worthy of your own thread! We need details!
Now I'm going to have to get 15" Soft 8's to replace my 16"s.
bonnzac 06-08-2009, 06:50 PM Tyler: They are Unique brand wheels from Discount Tire. I thought of going with the 16", but I do a lot of off road travel on corrugated roads and really liked the idea of tire wall flex when aired down. Oddly enough, when I test fitted the store room display wheel, they didnt fit the front hubs. I bought them anyways thinking I would grind down the calipers a little if I had to. But when the shipment came in they all fit.
As to pictures....I'll see if I can get some posted soon, although with the backspacing (3") they are FAR from the strut bucket. The negative of that is the rub on the pinch weld, which took some grinding.
phatdilf 06-08-2009, 08:56 PM bfg's all the way love them have the A/T no problems yet
