: New Wheels and Tires on a Sport 4x2

Hi Everyone-

Picking up my Patriot today, bought the base 4x2 with CVT, got it for $13,700.

So I cannot stand the standard steel wheels, and want to upgrade. I checked out tirerack, but they do not have anything listed under the patriot. I then checked the Compass, as I figured they are the same.

I have two questions:

First, will it work to use the Compass as my wheel selector. I admittedly know very little about wheels and tires, but saw the wheels retrieved had the same bolt pattern, just not sure about the offset, diameter, etc.

Second, all the recommended tire sizes yield performance (manly sports car) tire results. How do I know what type of SUV/Light Truck tire I can use on these?

I am just looking for a standard alloy wheel, or really any other choices out there that have more of a Jeep/SUV look. I hate the steel wheels.

Thanks, I am glad I found this forum!

Whoa! Sounds like you got a really good deal! In fact, that is the best deal I've heard about to date. Congrats! :beerchug:

Yeah, I thought it was pretty solid. My employer is a partner, so I got it for 1% under invoice, then got $2500 off that b/c of some incentive. Financed at 5.8%, could have gotten 3.5% if I wasn't lazy (my brother is in the Navy, so I can get Navy FCU). It is only the 2.0 though

And Heckler, I know there are other conversations on this, but I cannot find the specific answer to that question. Sorry, I just know very little about this sort of thing!

I am interested in swapping out the steel wheels as well.

My concern is not wanting to waste the OEM tires. Not really looking to go bigger or wider, just something cosmetic as the steel wheels are hideous.

The OEM steelies are 16X6.5", would stretching the 205 original rubber over a 7" rim be no good? There are so many options out there in 16x7.

Also I hear some concerns of many aftermarket rims not fitting the hubs, so we can't just go pick any old "car" 16 inchers....

JMO, you should be fine going with 16X7's but no wider with your OEM tires.

any Compass wheel will fit fine as well, but know up front that Compass' only use 17X6.5 and 18's so you'll have no choice to change tires.

there are several who have used the 16X8 Moabs from Wrangler Rubicons, but i would caution you against that. the Moabs weigh alot more than the OE 'MK' wheels and when you add larger tires as well, you could be adding as much as 40lbs or more per axle.......that's a lot of added stress on your powertrain (axles, cv joints and trans) and brakes.

all i'm saying is do your homework first before just throwing on some new wheels and tires........:smiley_thumbs_up:

Any rim that fits the Compass also fits the Patriot. You also might try the Caliber SE as that should get you some 16" options to keep your stock tires. One example (http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/WheelCloseUpServlet?target=runWheelSearch&initialPartNumber=KSE552101S&wheelMake=Sport+Edition&wheelModel=F7&wheelFinish=Silver+Painted&showRear=no&autoMake=Dodge&autoModel=Caliber&autoYear=2008&autoModClar=SE&filterSize=16&filterFinish=All&filterSpecial=false&filterBrand=All&filterNew=All&sort=Price).

For new tires, 225/60R17 is a good size if you upgrade to 17". That gets you in the overall diameter range for OEM tire sizes, quite a few options like the Michilen Hydroedge for road tire, or the Yok Geolander AT/S for all terrain.

The other option is scan the calssifieds here, Ebay, and Craig's List for others that are sellign their OEM aluminum wheels. Someone got the Patriot 17's for about $600 shipping including tires. Then you could sell your steelies or keep them for winter.

Thanks for the advice, APT. The wheels you selected for the Caliber were not bad, and a much better alternative than the stock wheels. $400 shipped is a good deal, too.

Thanks!

I will sell them to you for sure. My zip code is 49033....you could probably estimate they weigh 20 lbs each, you can arrange for freight. PM me if interested.

Hi, I actually like the steel wheels and I was wondering if you would be interested in selling one them with the rim and tire. I would like to use one for a full size spare.
Let me know.
Thanks

I may end up keep my tires if I get new alloys but the same size. Let me know if you would be interested in the steel wheels with no tires

mpg decreases 1 mpg for each tire size you go up .

also you can go up to as wide as a 245 tire that is what i have on my patriot. 245/40/r20, even though i had to put 1/8th spacer in had minor rubbing on the front passenger side

jersey, 245/40R20 is only 27.7" tall, less than the FDII size, more than the other stock tires.

Size of the tire does not hurt FE as much as weight. Take a tire/wheel combo @ 50 pounds for stock vs. some heavy AT tire on chrome wheels that is 80. That's a lot more inertial to turn/stop.
