: Ground Clearance

So I'm deciding whether to get FDI or FDII and my favorite feature of the FDII is that extra inch of ground clearance.

Does anyone know if option packages for extra ground clearance were available on the XJ Cherokee? For example, did the Sport 4WD have more ground clearance than the SE 2WD?

Thanks.

Around 1986, Jeep offered an option geared toward serious off-road enthusiasts called the "Off-Highway Vehicle" package that included heavy-duty suspension components, bigger (225/75/15) tires, skid plates, tow hooks, a 4:10 rear axle ratio (to help in climbing up steep grades and slogging through mud) and higher ground clearance.

I would like to see a picture of the FDII Patriot versus the FDI Patriot to see if the higher ground clearance is noticeable to the naked eye....

You know, I was thinking.....after watching the video presentation of the Patriot when they were showing the added pieces that differentiate the FD2 from FD1, adding a lift kit would be stupid for this vehicle.

Basically, Jeep has already added a 1" lift. Thus, if we were to add a 2.5 inch lift, we'd only be getting 1.5" because we couldn't stack the two lifts together.

I believe the Country packaged Cherokee offered increased ground clearance by an inch or so.

There are several other advantages of the Trail Rated package, principally the skid plates (good ones) and the tow hooks. The additional gear reduction of the FDII is worth every penny and transforms the vehicle on the trail.

I have a 2007 Jeep Patriot and would like to lift it about an inch or so. When will lifts for the Patriot be available. If anyone knows, please inform. Thx.

I believe that the Extra Ground Clearance on the FDII Patriot is achived by bigger tires. I don't think there's any kind of a lift in it.

The FDII has 18 Inch Tires.
I believe the FDI only has 17 Inch Tires.

Actually, it's 17" vs 16".

I have the FDII and the "trail rated option" that included going from 16 to 17 inch tires.

Can't speak for the 1" lift though. (thought I had read somewhere that it was achieved at the factory with some sort of added lift kit, but do NOT quote me on that)

Randoo is right, and still, I have a FDI Limited and my wheels are the bigger 17's...with OWL. The lift is not acheived by bigger tires...unless of course my FDI has the same clearance as the FDII, which I doubt.

I'm lost.."bigger 17's"? Is there a smaller 17? (sorry..couldn't resist)

The tire size you are quoting is the size for the FDII Off Road Group. Those are what I have too.

Nice, ain't they?? (I would have settled for 16s, but glad the 17s were part of the upgrade what we wanted)

edit: duh..didn't read your last correctly. You said you had the FDI..so if thats the case, maybe it *IS* a 1" lift installed at the factory.. (purely a SWAG there though).

On the parts list there are different codes for the springs. Code ZUA and code ZFA~ this may have something to do with the lift. ?? All the other parts under suspension seem to have no differentiation.

After just consulting my Patriot brochure, it is actually a suspension lift. The only difference in tires with the 17 in. wheels is when you get the Tire and Wheel Package or the Off Road Group which gets you the OWL tires.

Sorry, by "bigger 17's", I meant bigger than the 16's.
The lift can't be acheived by tires alone, because I have the biggest available OEM tires and mine is FDI. ...like I said, unless mine has the same clearance as the FDII's, and I doubt it.
