: Longer oil filter...
Reddart 03-22-2008, 09:50 AM Has anyone found a oil filter (for another application, perhaps) that has the same thread and mating surface as the stock one, but has a longer body? It would allow more filter area and flow, and there seems to be plenty of room for one in looking under mine (without an oil cooler, at least).

Jeepster55 03-22-2008, 08:24 PM first, i'm not an engineer by any means, but would a longer filter, with increased capacity, affect the oil pressure? seems to me it may decrease oil pressure which of course would NOT be a good thing...

not in my experiences. i used to run a larger oil filter on my old camaro, never saw a decrease in oil pressure. i've even run dual remote filters on my old truck, no decrease there either.
Farrel79 03-23-2008, 02:36 AM Oil pressure comes from the pump trying to squeeze oil between the crankshaft and it's bearings, and the camshaft and it's bearings. The pump runs constantly, increasing pressure until a relief valve limits it. Therefore, a larger filter will only affect the pressure build-up time, and even then, we're talking fractions of a second, especially with synthetic oil. I'd personally love to run a bigger filter. Has anyone consulted a Baldwin technical guide, or just the usual Crap *ahem* I mean Fram?

The filter is immediately after the pump, the pressure for the rest of the motor builds after it. Because of the pressure relief in the pump (and in the filter itself), it won't effect pressure directly, but it will allow more oil to flow through the filter (as opposed to being bypassed and unfiltered) and physically hold more contaminants.
