DaimlerChrysler’s U.S. dealers had their best January in six years, thanks in small part to the products turned out at the Belvidere assembly plant, the company reported Thursday.

DaimlerChrysler had 173,377 in sales in January, up 3.2 percent from last January. DaimlerChrysler was the only one of Detroit’s Big Three to see gains. General Motors sales fell 19 percent, while Ford sales fell 16.6 percent. Both Toyota Motor Corp. and DaimlerChrysler outsold Ford in the year’s first month.

DaimlerChrysler’s January total included 12,812 sales of the company’s Belvidere-built vehicles, the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and — for the first time — the Jeep Patriot, which went into production in December. The company sold 175 in January. Many Jeep dealers didn’t receive their first Patriots, which style-wise is based closely on the old Jeep Cherokee, until the last week of January.

The sales of the Belvidere-built models were up nearly 283 percent from last January’s total when dealers sold 3,347 Dodge Neons, which went out of production in October 2005.

DaimlerChrysler employs about 3,600 at the Belvidere plant, making it the second-largest employer in Boone, Ogle and Winnebago counties.

January marked the 12th month of sales for the Dodge Caliber. Dealers sold 8,672 Calibers in January and 91,471 overall in its first full year. Jeep Compass sales were down nearly 22 percent from December, but the 3,965 sold in January made it the model’s second-best month since hitting lots last June.
