So yesterday I had some time and it was so beautiful out I picked up my paint, chrome door trim, and wire mesh and went to town... today I took the dog to the beach and it became a photo shoot...haha and here are the results. (It was a beautiful day out today as well!) Monday I will be getting chrome door handles to add also.

Looks great John, thanks for the pics. Haven't seen the mesh done before and it looks good. Are you considering putting some fog lights in, I personally I think it would be the icing on the cake for the front end. You have inspired me the go out and do the chrome strips on mine. Cheers mate.

Very nice John. How did you attach the mesh?

Is your license plates blanked out or do you have that non-reflective finish on them that won't show up in a <red-light> camera?!

Where's the beach?

Where's the muffler shot?

It does look great--and for those that wonder how to do it, there was a great post a week or two back that told exactly how long to cut this material, etc. The material used was an adhesive backed door trim that was cut to 9" lengths.

Paul, thanks! like Jack said, don't buy those expensive ones on ebay, just some chrome door trim... make something so that you can cut them EXACTLY 9 inches or they will look odd, even with them being just a few MM off... it is noticeable. I am thinking about getting the fog lights, but am exploring other options right now....

Wade, I attached the mesh with wire clips and black zip ties, which are not noticeable when you aren't looking for them. Only black/steel blue can get away with the black zip ties, white, and silver can use the white ones. You could also use 3M tape with an extra piece on top to sandwich it so it doesn't move.

Don't use any of that expensive stuff either if you do this mesh. I found that mesh in the rain gutter isle at home depot for $1.20 plus tax and I used 4 pieces just because I was experimenting, you could do it with two... and 6 black 8" zip ties, total cost under $6.00 tax included. Not bad eh? and it held up to 90 MPH for 6 miles, so it is pretty secure. I should have taken more pictures while I was doing it...

These are at the beach, it is behind the Jeep, the muffler? Exactly... doesn't stick out.. you can clearly see the silhouette in the third picture, under the bumper, if you look hard enough. No, I just blurred these out, these are also going on CarDomain.

Thanks again!

Wow.

Great work.

The mesh is great.

Makes me think of doing mesh or something in the fog light holes.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Cork. The fog lights, I was going to take 1/2 inch chrome striping and line it, and it would look ok, but I found these new fog lights that have cool colored halos in it for like 50 bucks, and I am wondering if they are just junk or not...

I tried mesh in the circle, and in the upper grill, but it just didn't look right. I

put the chrome handles on today and they are so bright, I think I need to tone them down a little, not sure how? I think if I put some simulated etch on it, it will look more silver, and go with the rims. We'll see.

Does anybody have any pics of what the chrome grill inserts look like on a silver patriot?

They look damn good on your Patriot by the way.

WhatA,

You are right, the lights would look better. A $50 cost I can live with.

thanks. cork

Mesh looks great.....I am inspired to do the same...so you said to use 2 pieces cut to 9" in length of Mesh from Home Depot, what about the size in height? Also how exactly did you do it. I am assuming you had to get under the front end. Did you only use the zip ties? Or did you have to use an adhesive as well?

I also just ordered the vents for my silver patriot, I will post pics up after I put them on....

opps let me clarify above I see that the 9inches refers to the chrome door trim...do you think that would look good on a silver patriot grill? I guess I can try it out and see.

For the mesh what size should I cut?

I'll do a mini-write up a little later but it is easier then you might think, just a little time consuming, the cutting is tedious and looking at the mesh makes you kind of cross eyed after a while. lol... but then again I had no instructions so I was cutting re-cutting, re-doing, staring at it figuring out exactly what to do... and all.... like I said, I should get some pics tomorrow, and a write up later tomorrow night, possibly Wednesday night, depending on work...

That's awesome can't wait. I just picked up door trim but when I tried to put the 9 inches strips on the grill the 3 plastic shields in each section of the grill are too skinny, what kind of trim did u use, the type I got only goes on flat surfaces and the black sheilds are skinny and curved. I am thinking I cab put 3 pieces 1 on each side and then 1 directly on the curved area so with the 2 chrome pieces on either side the 3rd piece would sit on a flat surface but I need to go buy 2 more packages in order to have enough costing more. How did u do it and what did u use? I am also thinkung of putting some chrome in other areas like ont the side door guards and the front bumbr on the 3 lines on each side of the bumper and rear bumper. Have to wait until it warms up here though so I have to wait for now.

that would be the plastic door edge guard stuff. it is a "U" shape if you look at the end and there is an adhesive inside the "U". it wraps around the front edge. i have it on my xj and if you can check out a body shop supply or similar you can get it cheap. i got a 50 foot roll for the price of two 2 door kits and had enough to re-do it last summer. it will dull quickly if you drive alot so i left the film on and when it dulls pull the film and you're good to go for a couple more months. make sure you have them all the same height to...http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/8/23/1374441/DSCF0569.JPG

yeah, I actually got mine at auto zone in the cheesy fake chrome section, for $10 and one package does the whole grill with two extra pieces when they are cut at exactly 9". The package is a 18' roll, and is clear plastic with a red cardboard label inside, but if you can't find this, pepboys sells this brand...

The mesh looks great. The bright silver is a great contrast to your blue. I might have to try it with my green one. If anything I can always paint the mesh a glossy black.

awesome thanks WhatARiot and StockXJ....I will check for the cuved door trim.....so you think that this stuff will dull out? In terms of after market detailing options, I dont know much about these chrome detailing packages....do you guys think that the rolls you buy are not the same that manufactures use when making cars that have chrome? Wondering how dull you mean?

stockblackxj

the stuff I have dulls from road grime, bugs, and salt/sand in the winter. I guess the same as the front bumper will show pits etc after enough driving but the plastic on the strips shows a little more. they do last long enough to be worthwhile and they are easily removed and or replaced. Generally they are made for edges of doors and such where there would be less sand blasting going on but I would say go pick some up. easy and cheap way to be a little different than others until everyone has it.

cool, as long as they can be removed and reapplied again....thanks that is what I was worred about, if the strips are hard to take off.....awesome thanks again....

how do you reove it.. just pull?

stockblackxj
03-14-2008, 02:23 PM
basically ya. just pull. be carefully not to break your grill slats but leave the front end pointed into the sun and then peal them off. no problems for me and i have changed them a couple of times.
