I just brought a 2010 Jeep Compass two weeks ago and have put a thousand miles on it already. There is one issue I'm having. When I deacelarate I hear a winding noise like a drill powering down, this happens until i stop. If I take my foot off the gas it will do it too. The dealership said that its ok and its the cvt breaking in and should go away after awhile. anyone know if this is correct assumption? also when you take your foot off the gas is it suppose to jerk alittle?

I don't recall any noise or jerkiness like that in my first 5-24,800 miles. Maybe it is so for later models?

I've heard the noise and jerkiness are normal, it's part of the CVT experience. Some people say it doesn't happen in their case, some people say its enough to drive them nuts, but every car is different.

I wouldn't be worried.

I bought a 2010 jeep compass on july 16th and have the same thing going on...right at 1300rps it jerks when slowing down and even at 40mph it feels like its slowing down on its own when letting off the gas. I took it back and they said the cvt needs to break in. I only have 500 miles on the thing so its still brand new.. ive seen other discussion boards on this topic and they said it should get much better after 6000 miles. Also the compass should be driven differently than a car with a regular automatic transmission. Try keeping your foot on the gas a little longer but only a tiny bit to keep the rpms low.. and it helps with the jerkyness while driving on a side street at low rpms and low speed. I get more used to it everytime i drive it. And the slowing down when u let ur foot of the gas is supposed to help save gas and your breaks. If u have any more questions feel free to ask.

The newer models have a different fuel cut map programmed to save fuel. The ECM will turn off the injectors until about 1200 rpm, so that's probably the slight jerk your feeling.

Todde is correct. The jerk you feel is the engine coming back to life after the computer cuts off fuel flow. The ECM cuts the flow (on my '09 Pat) above 1500 rpm when no throttle is detected. It resumes fuel flow below 1500. The CVT also seems to "hunt" for the correct ratio at residential speeds. This will ease up as the Jeep breaks in and friction on the bearings, brakes, etc...is reduced. Still, the CVT does take a little getting used to. If the hunting or shudder bother you, try keeping just a touch of throttle applied, or use the Autostick.
