Don't kill the Commander... put a quality diesel in it. You get something with torque to haul and decent MPGs at a reasonable price and they will be hard to keep them in stock!

The future of the hulking Jeep Commander SUV introduced a little over a year ago looks bleak.
Auto analysts and other industry officials say the Commander, a boxy three-row SUV built at Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, is likely to be discontinued after the 2009 model-year.
"We removed the Commander from our forecast" after the 2009 model year, said Jeff Schuster, forecasting analyst with California-based J.D. Power and Associates. J.D. Power and other auto forecasting firms gather information from suppliers and other industry sources privy to automakers' future production plans...
That's sad news. Man, they only need to put in a good diesel, too. It's not the size It is the MPGs... put in a good diesel... a turbo diesel maybe... I would gladly snap up one if it was under $40k. I could easily put the seating and hauling capacity to use.

In my opinion, this just leaves them room to beef up the new Liberty. The Jeep line was overlapping too much, especially now that the 08 Liberty is set to grow in size.
Also, who the hell needs a 7 passenger off-road capable machine. That's what a minivan is for....hauling whiny kids.
The unfortunate side of this is that I feel the Commander was the best looking vehicle Jeep had in its current line-up. Its the closest thing to the old Cherokee.
From the spy photos of the new Liberty, it looks like it will be a little more rounded with a goofy bulging bumper like the Patriot. I hope with the demise of the Commander, Jeep recycles its front appearance on the new Liberty.

I believe that is the point. There are no other trail worthy vehicles that are able to haul 7 passangers. Or 5 plus the extra gear.
Minivans can't take the trails. None of them are really able to be taken on the trails.
Maybe, just maybe, if the kids were taken outdoors more and shown the trails, given the opportunity to burn some energy off climbing the rocks and trees they wouldn't whine so much. Just a thought.
I know people who buy the 3rd row seaters simply to be able to put four carseats in.

yeah, i am pretty upset about that decision. unfortunately, if the third row is in use in the commander, it really doesn't leave any room for gear, so it is pretty much like a minivan. i already told my wife that this just means we need to hurry and get one while they're still making them :)

the only thing is that minivans tend to have 'issues' after you take them down some light trails... you don't want to know the cost of straightening on out because the autodoors won't slide open because they are tweaked from a little trail twisting... :o
