: Spare Tire on Rear Door
Jacob 01-28-2008, 11:07 AM I would like to have a Full Size Spare Tire professionally mounted on the Rear Door. I need to utilize that compartment where the tire normally is.
Does anybody know if the rear Door will sustain the weight of the mount and the Spare Tire?
Thanks.. EddyJ
Rends 01-28-2008, 11:16 AM I donīt think that it will works. The tires will be way to heavy for the lifts.

every tire i have seen mounted on rear doors are for doors that swing sideways,
never saw one on an upward swinging door
seems like it will be more of a nuisance than anything else
hunter44102 01-28-2008, 11:26 AM Maybe you can find a way to put the spare on the roof rack when you need extra space inside..
Dmentd_Dan 01-28-2008, 03:19 PM if someone ever does an after market steel bumper then that would be the best mounting spot for a swing away tire carrier. don't think the hatch could support a tire properly.

I haven't look closely at the hinges, but I would be concerned with the additional weight damaging them. At the very least, heavy duty lifting cylinder would be needed.
If you're still looking to have the tire in back, why not investigate trailer hitch spare tire carriers? This is the first one I came across:

I'm sure with a bit of imagination, one could fabricate one that swings out of the way.
PAT's-riot 01-28-2008, 06:49 PM The 1994 Kia Sportage 4x4 (not sure if the US model was identical) had a vertical hatchback design and a swing arm spare tire carrier...
PAT's-riot 01-28-2008, 07:21 PM Please let me clarify this.. The hatch would open just like on the Patriot, but the tire carrier is mounted on a tube frame that is attached to the upper rear side but not attached directly to the hatch, this will let the tire swing away sideways and let you then open the hatch.
Jeepster55 01-28-2008, 07:28 PM there are several swing-away tire carriers available for Wranglers, for those who have put larger tires on and the weight is too much for the tailgate.
you might check and see if one of those could be modified OR if one of those companies that make them has any plans to make one for your Patriot. check out "QuadraTech" on the internet....see what they have and see who makes them. if there isn't one listed for your MK, email the manufacturer.
just a thought......GOOD LUCK! :smiley_thumbs_up:
1inchgroup 01-28-2008, 09:27 PM This may be painfully obvious coming from me...
You could strap it to the front end of the car...and that'll serve two purposes. Free up that cargo area, AND stop hood flappage!!!
Win-win-win
firemothjoe 01-29-2008, 02:50 AM I also like the idea of a huge storage cubby. That spare tire takes up a LOT of space that could be used for tools and outdoor gear.
That idea of having to swing it out of the way sickens me because I open that tailgate almost as much as I open the driver door! It'll probably be easier and cheaper to put a cover on the spare tire and put it in a basket roof rack.... with offroad lights! Might have a cool look to it. Ill probably be doing that in a few years when I start actually treating my Pat like a Jeep!
quiff69 01-29-2008, 10:03 AM I'm working on a hitch mounted tire and jerry can carrier that will swing out of the way. I will post pics as I make progress.
Silverone 02-04-2008, 11:39 AM Based on the one from etrailer, hinge and pin it so it swings down. Then get an extension welded on to receive a ball mount.
I have found this on a website called truckcandy.com the name of the item is a tiregate tailgate tire carrier. now it doesn't show that it will work for a jeep patriot, but i'm sure it would because it fits onto a hitch, it is all one piece. I think this does work and would work if u were to take a little bit off of the bumper on the jeep patriot.
bobbo_dc 05-28-2010, 06:23 PM Replace that massive muffler and mount it underneath.
MINICooperS 05-29-2010, 12:56 AM RunFlats and leave the spare at home?

RunFlats don't work out so well if you rip a sidewall up on a rock......
BlueFury79 11-27-2011, 01:06 AM A couple new companies have come out with better rear spare carrying systems since this thread was started:
http://www.blackpawinnovations.com/ and they have a YouTube video of their product which is hitch-mounted.

Also Tactical Armor Group (TAG) offers all-steel replacement bumper systems with swing-away spare tire mount:

Blackpaw is my favorite, but I'll have to save up for it. @ $700 each one's custom made.
xiaodawei 11-27-2011, 02:24 PM I like BlueFury's post - for my 2cents worth, the fact that "THE BLACKPAW TIRE CARRIER FITS INTO YOUR HITCH NO DRILLING BOLTING OR WELDING JUST PLUG IN AND GO!!" seems to be a major plus point. Just slip it in when you need it (off-roading), and slip it back out when you don't (commuting).
mrJeepr44 11-27-2011, 02:50 PM It looks cool, but $700 for a tire carrier is a bit much. It's got a cool first aid kit and 72 hour kit, but I would probably put all that stuff under the trunk lid since the tire wouldn't be there any more, so the other features are a wash
I wonder who makes less expensive, simplified, swingout hitch mounted tire carriers
