Hi guys, have just bought some 20's for the Pat. Was planning on putting 245/40/20's but the tyre prices range from $270 - $600+ each!:wow:

I have read on other forums regarding price vs performance & reliability. They debate on it for hours and a heap of tyre suggestions are given. The worst bit is that they're overseas so not all tyre brands mentioned are locally available here in Aust.

Anyone can suggest a good tyre for a decent price? What I mean to ask is a tyre that is good in wet/dry conditions, low noise and is not overly expensive.

I know I cant have my cake and eat it, but some input from you out there might help me decide.

Cheers

I've just put 19" Startech's and bought Fullrun budget tyres 245/40/19 £360.00 GBP for the four, balanced and fitted here in the UK. I wanted the 20's but they were £544.00 plus vat @ 17.5% without the tyres. I can reccommend the Fullrun if they doo that size and as they are Chinese you should be able to get them in Oz. Google Fullrun for further info.

I'm in sth east burbs of Melb. Been doing a fair bit of ringing around for prices (Bob Jane, Jaxquickfit, Beaurepaires, The Tyre Factory) and the tyres they all recommend are way too pricey (>$600). Was even quoted $1080 a tyre at one place!!!

The search continues...

Where in melb are you Harold?

try speaking to olly or his side-kick (can't remember his name) at 'the tyre professionals' in mcintyre rd, sunshine nth 9364 9761

if he can't sort you out, no-one can

not sure if you are specifying 245/40's or would change a mm here or there (might be some cost savings if you do - not sure, just a thought)

good luck

ps - name's not harold - so no point mentioning me - but he'll do the very best for you - ring him early in the day - 8am ish

pps - what are you doing with your stockies??

I'll be selling my stockies once I find the right tyres for the 20's. Might put them up on ebay. You could always make me an offer ;)

I run 245/45/20 Avon Tech M550.

They're pretty good for performance all season tires. Not the end all and be all. But they sure didn't hit the wallet hard. I think I ended up paying about $150usd for each tire.

That's pretty good for the price. Unfortunately, we can get hold of that brand here. It has been suggested to me to fit 255/35/20 coz they are the exact rolling diameter to that of the stock Conti's. I'm unsure if they will rub on full lock though, but the prices are more reasonable than the 245/40s (starting @ $290 for decent ones).

Hankook Ventus ST I had on my '96 Cherokee (275x45zr20) and I managed 80,000km out of them. Cost me $250 each 3-4 years ago.

The 22s (255x30zr22) I use are $hit Nangkangs. I have barely 40,000km and they are nearly worn out (evenly) I'd go see Tyre Factory Princes Hwy Dandenong & speak to Simon or Motorsports Wheels on Sth Gippy Highway Dandenong and have a chat to Regan.

Thanks for the input broadz. i have spoken to both places (Motorsport & TTF Dandy) but not with the respective reps you have mentioned. Both places were able to recommend tyres that were of unknown brand all the way to the top brands, of course the price range was very broad.

I have contemplated going with the Federal 595EVO in a 255/35/20 or the Kumho KU31 in the same size. These two tyres are both meet load and speed index for the Pat. In my search, unfortunately, not all tyre brands accommodate for load index, hence, I have been able to bring it down to these 2 choices.

Just been reading some reviews on other forums about Federal and Kumho, they generally have positive feedback. Any one else used these brands before on other cars?

Oh BTW, I too had Nankang tyres (NS2) on my old car. They were ok and lasted 50,000kms but the sidewalls began to crack after two yrs. Freakin scary!

Hey Broadz, where in melb are u?

I used to get Kuhmo 265/35/18 for under $200 a pop, which was pretty good value through Jax-Quickfit.

Khumo make good smoke too !!

Its just a fact - any 20" tyres are going to cost you money. Irrespective of if you find a good tyre that caters for your specs.
As soon as you step into the 20"+ category, your going to pay through the nose. Especially because you need a low profile tyre on such a big rim, there a pain in the arse to fit without damaging both the tyre & the rim!

Good luck though. I'd focus on people who stock mostly the bigger/wanky rims. They should have a lil more buying power dealing with the suppliers more often.
