So I was driving to work this AM. Car is comfy, got the Sirius going, heated seats, yada yada. And I started thinking again about the whiny reviews, esp the folks complaining about hard armrests and consoles.

Folks, if your elbows can't take it, just admit that you are not man (or woman) enough to drive anything more macho than a white Lexus RX330. It's a Jeep, fer Pete's sake.

My elbows are just fine in the Jeep, and I'm a wuss. So there.

Well Fred Flinstone thinks you're a sissy for having plastic interior pieces. All of his were made of rock!

The "It's a Jeep" line is the lamest excuse on the planet. Considering how every vehicle since the Model T has had a padded arm rest, asking for one in a vehicle with modern technology out the wazoo isn't a crazy request.

I don't even really use the arm rests, one hand sits on the shifter (manual) and the other's on the wheel so my elbows are usually in the air.
On the odd occasion where I do set them down the plastic does not bother me.
Sure, Jeep could have made them cushier, but they didn't, so find a way around it, suck it up or return it.
Arm rests are prlly the next to last thing I would concern myself with when purchasing a new vehicle, but if it's tops on the list then maybe a lexus is more for ya.

I never even consider my armrests a problem. I use them all the time and am comfortable.

Even though it's a Jeep, I still consider it a smoother ride than my Hubby's 300Z. Holy cow...that thing finds every bump in the road and sends you a bulletin about them!! I love how smooth my ride in the Jeep is!!

I was just providing the opposite point of view above... the arm rests (or any of the other plastic for that matter) dont bother me at all either.

Looks deeper into that complaint... they are reviewing this new Jeep and the biggest issue they could find to complain about was that the armrests weren't soft enough. To me, that means the rest of the vehicle must have really impressed them!

Yeh, we know...this whole thread is a little tongue-in-cheek, right? ;)

Personally, I don't mind the armrests. They aren't bad, but they aren't that great either. I can understand why others don't like it, though.

And honestly, I'm getting really sick of hearing the whole "It's a Jeep!" phrase being used as a sort of answer to the Patriot's shortcomings. Maybe the steering wheel on the '09s will be available as an option, and those who don't buy a steering wheel can "It's a Jeep!" their way out of that one. ;)

Yes you did, we determined that the hard armrests are causing people to not buy the Patriot and therefore causing the "recession".

For those "weinies", get some matching leather, a little bit thin foam padding and stick a padded cover on that bad boy.
Guys with Magnums and Chargers(we too have the hard console cover) have sent out the cover and had it upolstered with sharp looking, and soft feeling results :)

I've never noticed and I use the arm rest once in awhile. My husband hasn't said anything and neither has anyone else that has road in it.

I've done a round trip from Cali to Ny and can personally be candid with everyone and say the hard armrests suck. In short trips they are fine, long journeys forget about it they grind, taunt and punish you throughout the 2600 straight miles of pain!

The answer of "It's a Jeep" is not an excuse; it's a reason. The Jeep brand generally puts utility and durability before comfort. Jeep owners are usually the type for whom utility and durability are more important than comfort.

When someone says that Jeep should make the interior of the Patriot softer, they're essentially saying that Jeep should make the Patriot more like other SUVs. The reason I like the Patriot is because it is NOT like the other SUVs. I like the fact that, unlike a soft armrest, I don't have to worry about the Patriot's armrest getting ripped by a tool, firewood, or whatever gear might come in contact with it. I want a vehicle with a hard, durable interior... and I don't have many choices. You softies, on the other hand, have many SUV choices.

There's easily a few dozen SUVs in the market that cater to those who prefer a softer, more feminine interior. Instead of complaining about the Jeep, why not buy an SUV that is more suited to your pampered lifestyle?

Leave the Patriot to us real men, who wipe our asses with pine cones! (http://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/showthread.php?p=32272)

Or better yet, the wienies could ask LaZBoy to make smaller sized recliners to replace the driver seat. And while they're at it, throw in the built in shiatsu back massager.

Good one Neil. Had a good loooong laugh. but seriously fellows, the ones that like to mark their territory, whats the point of blasting other "non-alpha males"? I'm sorry i don`t use pine cones Rotten...I tried very hard not to use toilet paper, but i guess i`m not man enough...

I really don`t see the point of all the fuss going on here. The fact of the matter is that the Patriot was not built for serious heavy duty work nor for off road stunts. I understand that its a "JEEP" but for god sakes lets shed the stereotypical myth of JEEP=PLAIN, TOUGH, NASTY, ME KILL YOU WITH MY CLUB car!

Jeep and especially the Patriot was designed for urban dwellers that take an annual detour going up to their cottages. If you want the car that was just described by some i think a Dodge or GMC pick up should do the deal for you people. Jeep is evolving and the cheap plastic that is present in the Patriot is a disgrace. period!

A certain commercial comes to mind. Can`t remember the car being advertised, but the point of the commercial was that its SUV was for doing " normal people stuff..."

Okay, will those who feel the plastic arm rest are too hard for your dainty elbows, please pass you man cards to the front of the room. Either Neil or I will be collecting them.... ;)

Is this where one can file for workman's comp due to carpel tunnel, tennis elbow, and arthritis caused by the unnecessarily hard armrests? I also would like to file a griveance against the designer, is that in another room?

I find that my FOREARM actually rests on the ARMrests and this leads to a better distribution of the weight and therefore there is no pain in my ELBOW when I am using the ARMrest.

I rest my left elbow on the "hard" door and my right on the "hard" console when I drive, in town, long trips, wherever....never, ever been a problem for me. I do think that people are quick to b*tch and moan about stuff. I just hope they aren't this uptight in their daily lives, because if they are they must live really stressful lives.

Since the thread is so loopy anyway: TONY1911 - So by your current avatar I assume that you feel your Patriot keys are also a deadly weapon, or maybe your Patriot itself is?

Brian P

I think I might be on to something here. I am a tall person, that puts my arms higher up and therefore there is not a lot of pressure being put on the arm rest. However, if you are a shorter person, your arms would likely sit lower and you might have more pressure on the armrest for that reason. That could get uncomfortable over time.

So I wonder, is it the short people who don't like the arm rest and the tall people that don't mind it?

Tony1911
01-30-2008, 08:20 AM
Nah. I was going for more of a "basic tools" effect there. I don't really consider a pocket knife I've used daily for the last couple of years to be a "deadly weapon" but rather an every day item that nobody should leave home without. The thought never crossed my mind that someone would look at it that way, actually.

(Come to think of it, neither would my first thought about a pistol be about "deadly weapons" either. I would see either a fun hobby or a piece of life saving equipment, depending on the pistol.)

(Originally I meant to take a photo of just the 1911 and the keys, since this is a Jeep forum and my nickname does mention 1911, but those didn't come out so well. I also meant to use two 1911's as a "frame" to the keys but my girlfriends pistol was not available at the time. So I improvised with the knife from my pocket there and one of those photos came out ok.)

The door armrests are amongst the hardest, crudest I've ever seen or used. Differently boned people might experience different levels of discomfort - if you're thin that is, it will probably bother you more. It's the one aspect of the mostly plastic interior that bothers me on my Patriot - and there's no way to upgrade it either, as far as I can tell.

Thanks, Gaze! That "It's a Jeep" blurb is not only ridiculous, but represents everything that's been wrong with American auto manufacturers in the past 25 years. You can't just produce uncompetitive products year after year and solve it with slogans, or by crying to Congress that the foreign competition is unfair.
