"Subway Hero" Gets a Hero's Ride on The Ellen Show

The New York City “subway hero”, who last week saved a young man from a onrushing train, won’t have to take the underground much longer.

On the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” which aired on Jan. 10, Wesley Autrey was given a 2007 Jeep Patriot in honor of his daring deed.

If you didn’t hear, Autrey, a construction worker who lives in New York City, was standing on the subway platform with his two young daughters when he noticed a young man who had fallen on the train tracks and was having a seizure. Disregarding an approaching subway, Autrey leapt down to help the young man. Autrey rolled him into a drainage area between the tracks and pressed the young man to the ground just as a train passed inches overhead.

On her show, Ellen read a letter written by Chrysler Group Chief Executive Tom LaSorda: “When I heard of your heroic and unselfish act to help a fellow American in need without any regard to your own safety, I personally felt it would be an honor on behalf of myself and Chrysler Group to honor you and your family with a brand new 2007 Jeep Patriot – a vehicle appropriate for a man like yourself."

Autrey and his two daughters then jumped into the Patriot. “The Jeep Patriot is the top-rated SUV,” Ellen said. “It’s compact, which is good for the city. And also, it handles great, gets excellent mileage. You’re going to love it. And Chrysler’s going to pay for a full year of parking in the city, which is a really cool thing."

“If anything goes on in subways, somebody else is going to have to help people, because you’re done with subways for awhile,” Ellen said.

It looks smaller then I thought.

Cool that he got one. And, it is definitely smaller than a Cherokee, thats for sure. But, it gets good mileage and will be Trail Rated. Lets face it, you can't have a full size Jeep that gets good gas mileage.

Actually, the Patriot is 6 inches longer that the Cherokee, and only 3/10 of an inch lesser in width. It sure does APPEAR to be smaller than the Cherokee, for some reason. Maybe when we actually see it in person it won't look so small.

1997-2001 Jeep Cherokee
Width 69.4, Length 167.5, Height 64

2007 Jeep Patriot
Width 69.1, Length 173.6, Height 64.4

I guess I can't expect to drive a liberty with a four banger. With the factory lift it only has .4 inch difference in clearance with the liberty and the only real difference is it's 7 inches shorter. It doesn't look possible in that pic.

maybe because most of the Cherokees I have seen lately have all been lifted.

it must be an optical illusion with ellen being closer to the camera or whatever ... if you look at the guy's head through the driver window (in the first pic) and take that perspective, the vehicle looks huge.

also, no trail-rated badge, so this may be the first time we've seen a pic of a patriot without the FDII package's additional 1" of ground clearance (all the press shots & live pics i've seen thus far have had the extra inch, obvious from either a trail-rated badge or the hooks on the front that also come w/ the package).

These are from 05 but if it's anything like the Patriot today I'm pretty much sold.

The guy looks decently sized inside of it. However, after doing some checking, Ellen is 5'7", that makes this Jeep really really short. If I feel like a midget getting into my clown car, my thoughts of a Patriot may be out.

I'll have to see one in person. With Ellen beside it it doesn't look much taller than a Caliber.

The overall height is listed at 64.4 inches. Only .2 taller than the compass.

...until we all add a 2.5" suspension lift, making it a grand total of 66.9":D .

From brochures...

Caliber 60.4 inches high
Patriot 64.4 inches high

4 inches more than a Caliber.

OK, I guess we need somebody to volunteer to get into the public launch and snap a pic of a Pat next to an XJ.

Any takers? (lol)

I've got to stop obsessing about it until I see one in person. The specs are Cherokee-like so it should be fine.

whatever guys ... the cherokee's small size was one of the best things about it to me ... that engine with that size is what made it awesome.

the patriot's bigger than a cherokee in almost every dimension. there's the '08 liberty or even commander if you want something bigger than a patriot, but for me, patriot size is great ... it's the engine that makes me nervous.

seriously, the grand cherokee is only 2" taller.

Okay, okay...since we're all obsessing about height....

I'm so sick of being in a little sedan and not being able to see what is going on in front of the SUVs in front of me on the road. Any thoughts on how the view of the road will be from the driver's seat of the Patriot? I'm really hoping to be "up there" a little bit. I don't expect the feeling of being in a full size SUV, but something waay better than my granny car is what I'm sincerely hoping for.

Thoughts? Opinions from those that have test-driven the Compass perhaps?

Going to test a Compass tomorrow or Friday. I'm hoping the 4 cyl will be good enough. We'll see.
