: Hill Start Assist

Hi Guys,

I bought a Patriot (Brisbane) about a month ago. The selling point was the fact that the new sport 5spd manual comes with hill start assist. - The missus is not confident when it comes to driving a manual.

I have since then had the pat in a few times (twice because of a transmission oil leak - apparently a porous transmission, which will be replaced with a new one) and was told that this feature was not installed. I am now waiting for Jeep Australia to get back to the service centre.

Has this happened to anyone else and if so, what did you do to rectify the problem?

Wayne, sorry but I'm no help to you as I do not have the manual trans. Hopefully someone else can help you out.

Hey Wayne, I too bought a Patriot last month (Melbourne). I didnt think that anyone could get a 2010 Pat SPORT in manual trans without HSA, it's a standard feature. I am very surprised to hear of your case. Please keep us updated on your issue.
BTW, did your trans just start leaking on your driveway? I'm a little concerned about mine now that you've encountered this. Any other issues you've come across with the car?

I'll keep you guys posted.

I noticed an oil patch about a week after my 1k service. I'm surprised the techies hadn't picked it up. Just keep an eye out.

No problems other than what I listed though. I do like the pat. It has a smooth ride, the steering is light and the cabin has better sound proofing than all my previous vehicles. The fuel consumption is good too, not to mention that here in QLD the rego is worked on a 'per cylinder' rate....:p

Can someone supply the theory and/or mechanics behind hill start assist?

I'm not sure on this version Jepstr. But other systems have employed a brake hold setup. Where the brakes are held for you even after you take your foot off. Which gives you time to press the gas and clutch together.

My buddies Subi has this. When hes on a hill and lets got of the brake the car starts to roll backwards, then his parking brake kicks in and stops the roll. Not sure if it works the same for the Patriot.

I wonder how it knows the difference between backing up and rolling while waiting to let the clutch out.

Off topic, but are you a gunzel?

Avenger not CVT... 4 speed torque converter Auto with Overdrive 4th.

Canadian Patriot, eh?

I have a 2010 Patriot with 5-speed and hill start assist. The way that it knows it is on a hill is because it has a gyro (or accelerometer) placed somewhere in the car so that it knows what the angle of your car is with respect to level ground. Once you pass a certain angle (not sure what the angle is set at) and you are at a stop, the hill start assist will kick in before you even roll back AT ALL. It does so by applying the brakes for roughly2 seconds to give you time to let up the clutch and press the gas without rolling backwards and smashing into the car that is abnormally close to your a$$ behind you.

I find that this feature works GREAT and as some of you have already said, it should have been a standard feature on your PAT.

However, you can toggle the hill start assist ON or OFF by using the little computer screen on the bottom left side of your instrument cluster. If you haven't check out how to toggle it ON or OFF, I suggest you read the user's manual because there are a lot more useful options in there!

Your dealership should have described all of these important features to you before they let you drive it off the lot! I would honestly write a letter to Chrysler explaining your bad experience! But that's just my $0.02...

In the US we are ferroequinologists.
Or microferroequinologists if you model exclusively and ignore the prototypes.;)

I wonder how it knows the difference between backing up and rolling while waiting to let the clutch out.

Most of these extra "gizmos" are included when they don't require much hardware and can just mine the required sensory data from other systems.

In this case, I'm sure some of the sensors that are used by the traction control and stability control are tapped into to determine (roughly at least) the slope that the vehicle is on. It would also check to see if it is in 1st gear, since the assist only works in first gear.

The programming would be simple.

1) is the vehicle is on a slope greater than XX%
2) is the vehicle in first gear with the clutch and brake pedals depressed
3) if both conditions are true, then lock brake until one of the following happens: clutch is released, gas pedal is depressed more than XX%, vehicle speed exceeds XXmph

Electromicroferroequinology?

Electromicroferroequinology? Yes. AC-tri-rail, DC wired and wireless. Tinplate in O and Standard, then N and G.

Maybe we should start a trains thread so we don't hijack the roll back thread.

Good idea to give that hill start an On-Off Option!

Have you ever tried putting an N Gauge loco back on the track when you are drunk.??

I have the 2010 runout model, it does have the hill-start assist. I read in the manual somewhere that this is a programmable feature (I think), I will have a look through the manual again and let you know..
Regards

Better go to sleep now ...

No it doesn't.

In neutral it will roll back
In first facing uphill it will apply the brake
In reverse facing downhill it will apply the brake

Seems to work almost every time, it did roll on me once in reverse facing downhill? perhaps there was insufficient gradient for it to apply? I think it needs 7 degrees or more.
