: windshield crack
yrret 04-09-2010, 03:37 AM :confused:BOUGHT PATRIOT JUST 1.5 WEEKS AGO....DONE 445KMS...WINDSHIELD CRACKED DRIVERS SIDE ORIGINATING FROM UNDER THE RUBBER MOUNT BELOW FIELD OF VISION.....NO STONE HIT....FORTUNATLY REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY...ANY ONE HAD THIS PROBLEM? AND WHAT HAPPENED,
todde702 04-09-2010, 07:57 AM I had a rock crack mine on the highway last year. Quite a few folks have had to replace the wind shield already on here. Odd that it would start from the bottom on yours. Only thing I can think is it was installed too low and bumps/body movement caused yours to crack.
dixiedawg 04-09-2010, 09:01 AM I've seen that is some foreign material is in the channel for the windshield.
At least they replaced it free.
I thought I had the same thing, but they said there was a nick, which I still never saw. But at least I have no deductible for glass replacement on my insurance, so I had no out of pocket costs. With my driving I usually replace one each year, so that's why I have no deductible on my coverage.
brimac55 08-05-2011, 12:39 PM what the hey? had hailstorm Weds night, stones about marble size, checked my 2011 Jeep Patriot in the AM ... no hail damge on body at all BUT there is a huge crack starting from under rubber on passenger side up curving up windshield into passenger line of vision... that crack is about 12" long. There is no visible hit pit in window- just a crack. Did the sudden cold cause it? Are " unknown cause" windshield cracks a commen warranty problem ?

Here in Florida, windshields are replace by insurance company by law for free. However, I know that many times, a replace of the windshield is followed by leaks. They never seem to seal the same way. Sometimes they re-seal the windshield where the crack is.
By the way, no offense, but writing in all caps in a forum generally implies that you are yelling. It is normally not done unless you are mad.
:D
jrmiller 08-05-2011, 10:16 PM A few months ago I got hit by a lug nut flying off a semi that was heading the other way (2-lane highway). It made a big 'splat' on the passenger side (see photo). When the glass guy showed up to replace the windshield, he showed me that there was a crack on the drivers side, low down near the rubber trim. He said that it was an older crack, not caused by the recent hit. Since I hadn't been hit by anything before, I probably would have had the same probelm at some point. So far, no leaks in the new windshield. I had bad luck on my old Cherokee, having the windshield replaced 3 times.
jloffermann 08-07-2011, 01:14 AM Dang man lucky it didn't go through sorry about the windshield bro. how far did you jump out your seat though haha. (sorry had to ask)
Afmcronnie 08-07-2011, 07:47 AM I wonder how he could tell it was an "older" crack? To me one piece of broken glass looks the same as another. This skill could have practical applications in the home. Im pretty sure Ive been set up in the past to take the blame for chipped drinking glasses.

Might be able to tell if there is dirt (or more dirt) in the crack.
Stonent 08-07-2011, 02:02 PM I got hit with a very tiny stone right at the bottom edge where it meets the rubber. No damage noticed at the time but later that day it was 3 inches, the next morning 6, and now over a foot.

kds is correct; the new crack was clean, the old one had some crud in there. At least that's what the glass guy implied.

Well, I didn't soil myself, but I'm glad I keep my seat belt on! I'm pretty sure it was a lug-nut, because I saw it flying off the rear wheel of the trailer, right at my head. Could have been a rock, but the end result was the same: I'm pretty sure I yelled in an unmanly fashion.
Afmcronnie 08-07-2011, 06:03 PM Yeah. A lug nut would get my attention. Im pretty sure I made girl sounds when a cowpie came straight through my sunroof opening in my FDI.

This was just a wild guess. I only knew this because when I was little I was in the backyard messing around, and I ended up breaking one of my dad's plastic oil pans (not like an on-car metal oil pan, a pan that you use to collect used oil when changing the oil). He got pissed, I denied that I broke it. He said he could tell that I broke it because the cracks on it were clean while the rest of the plastic was dirty, indicating a newer break.
Pretty circumstantial evidence, but he got me. :)
Afmcronnie 08-07-2011, 09:18 PM That glass guy must have had some pretty darn good eyes, since a crack would have to be more like a crevice to see dirt in it. Especially since he seems to have pointed this out to you while the windshield was still on the vehicle. There was a crack in the windshield of an F-150 I had that was there for a couple years. It never looked any different from the day it happened until the day I sold it, and that truck saw more than it's fair share of grime.
