: Terrible Noise When in Reverse Cold Start
richie5120 12-13-2007, 12:43 PM My Patriot is garage kept & when I start it up the temp is reading anywhere from 30 to 44 depends on how cold it is outside. When it hits 40 or under & in Reverse Gear I hear a LOUD High pitch sound when I apply the brakes. It's actually a lot louder then the horn itself! It's very annoying and embarrassing being that it's a new Jeep! It goes away after a minute or so, guessing the brakes are warmed up or wearing the dew off by then? Doesn't happen in Drive when I apply the brakes. Anyone else have this problem? Comments are welcome before I take her in to dealership. tia
AbqPatriot 12-13-2007, 01:46 PM I get the same. A mechanic told me it was something about the eco-friendly organic break pads. I get the noise when I do a lot of off-road too. It does not seem to effect the function of the brakes, but it bugs. I keep thinking I'll get it looked at, but then I get lazy.
Wheezy 12-13-2007, 05:17 PM It's just because rust forms on the brake discs from moisture, and as soon as you let them heat up a bit and use the brakes a bit, the rust will be cleaned off.
crispy17 12-14-2007, 08:28 AM I get the same noise backing out of my driveway in the mornings. It is a little unsettling to hear a noise like that from a new vehicle, but I just chalk it up to the brake pads. I can live with it as long as the brakes still function properly.
Keeping Fingers Crossed 12-14-2007, 09:02 AM Yea, me too but why not all the time?..here's another one..sometimes I back in @ night, so I pull forward in the morning. I have never heard it going in forward.

Because you usually don't drive forwards with the brakes on all the time? ;)
got the same issue here... anybody got it looked at yet?
festerw 12-14-2007, 12:58 PM It's completely normal, every car does it some worse than others. I'm just happy it's not as violent as the truck that will feel like it snaps your neck.
hunter44102 12-14-2007, 01:37 PM I've never experience this and I back out of my garage every morning, while holding the brakes.
I'm assuming everyone here has the 4 wheel disc brakes. (I have them).
If it happens every morning then I don't think its due to rust. I would think there would be a very insignificant amount of rust.
An easy experiment:
After driving the car all day. Pull into your garage and do the same thing. This will eliminate rust as the problem.
firemothjoe 12-14-2007, 01:40 PM I get a little squeak when I back up too. Not a big deal for me. It's just some rust/dust on the rotors. Or is is? If it's louder than the horn, then yes you should take it in.
My old suzuki use to do it real bad. When I had my break pads changed, they also resurfaced the rotors. Never squeaked again after that. It's strange for NEW rotors to behave like that.
Did somebody say 'recall'?

I believe it is rust on the rotors. It never does it after you've been driving, as the rust is worn off the first time you apply your brakes. If you check your rotors after you haven't driven for a day or two, you can see the rust (unless you come from somewhere dry like the desert).
richie5120 12-14-2007, 02:57 PM Only way to stop it from happening is to use the Emergency brake to stop in Reverse. I have appointment on Tuesday. I'll report their findings.

It's going to do it anyway the next time you apply the brakes. It's no big deal- one squeak (or squawk) and it's fixed.
DanCMH 12-14-2007, 09:43 PM This is my 3rd Jeep. They've all done it. It's the brakes. The damper they are the louder the noise but after one or two squawks it's gone. It's never affected their performance.
richie5120 12-15-2007, 12:29 AM I've owned 1 New Wrangler and 3 New Jeep Cherokee's and non of them ever did it. The Wrangler and 1 of the Cherokee's were kept outside.
richie5120 12-18-2007, 08:57 PM Just as some of you stated, it's surface rust! Odd it only happens in Reverse though. I was told by mechanic to get brake maintance done on them.
Also I brought up that I was hearing a very very slight clunking noise when entering/exiting driveways with steep angles. Turns out it's the linkage to sway bars. Those are being ordered and are under warranty. Not sure if this is caused from pulling boat or not. Those of you that have been towing make sure to listen for it!
hunter44102 12-18-2007, 10:07 PM If it was surface rust, wouldn't we all be having the problem?
I've left the Patriot in my humid garage for days at a time (without driving), and it still doesn't squeak in reverse.
I wonder if they changed the type of brake parts. My Patriot is a 2007 built in March/07. My brakes have been completely quiet 8700 miles later
I'd be willing to bet the dealer isn't going to do anything if you take it in. It is normal and is a result of moisture and temperature, nothing wrong with the Patriot or the brakes.
cadavev 12-19-2007, 11:21 AM i have the same issue on my 07 and i think it has to do with the reardiscs i thoughts maybe it was self adjustng or something next time i got for service i'll bring it up see what they say.
Ringo505n 12-19-2007, 11:54 AM You know I had a similar issue with my 4Runner and it turned out to be my parking brake cable needed to be adjusted. The cable was sticking on the rear driver side. It would squeak once and then be fine. I wonder if that could be the cause on your Pats. I park in an open carport and back out of my driveway everyday without a peep or squeak from the brakes.

Mine has squeaked about 10 times in the past 3 months or so. It has always been on cool, heavy fog mornings. I have only used my e-brake once since I've owned the car. Still think it isn't a Patriot problem.
hasty10805 12-19-2007, 01:20 PM I have the same problem! It is really loud! Build date of 5/07.
daguno 02-26-2008, 12:34 AM I had mine in today and the dealer is going to do a full brake job on both rears to address the howling in reverse issue. I just asked them to look at them and they came back that they are going to overhaul them. I'll let you know if it takes care of the noise.
