: 1st oil change
drlnfil 12-11-2007, 10:07 AM back to ohiobuckintx last thread, when should you have the first oil change. jeep says every 10,000 kms (6000mi) i don't believe that this can be right as all the junk from the engine makes its way into the oil. any ideas? any suggestions?
ejkelvin 12-11-2007, 10:19 AM I'm almost at 3,000 miles and I'm going Friday for my 1st oil change. Rather be safe than sorry. I have never had a new jeep or car before so I was curious also.
Brian P 12-11-2007, 11:56 AM I believe you have to have it changed every 5000kms or you void the warrenty. Either way, 5000kms is the max I would go on any vehicle.
Keeping Fingers Crossed 12-11-2007, 12:03 PM I believe you have to have it changed every 5000kms or you void the warrenty. Either way, 5000kms is the max I would go on any vehicle.
Well....Toronto here. Owners manual says 10,000, the dealer put a sticker on the window saying 5,000.
I showed up @ 5,000, and the service manager says 10,000. I told them someone there put the sticker on, he said well you dont really need it and you can go.., I said I left work early so you might as well do it and asked if he can come up with any other surprises before i leave.
Unbelievable eh?
Akula 12-11-2007, 12:38 PM The owner's manual says no more than 6000 miles. To me, that says anything up to it will keep it in warranty coverage. The Patriot also has an oil change indicator that should tell you when it thinks it wants fresh oil, so mostly I plan to go by that.
I'm at 3800 and still no change. I don't worry about it- nowadays oil is high quality and won't wear out at 3000 miles, and so long as you use a quality filter, 5000 miles is perfectly OK (that's the recommendation on my wife's Acura for the "severe duty" maintenance schedule).
When mine dings at me, I'll call the dealer and set up the appointment.
luwana 12-11-2007, 01:26 PM I got a call from the dealership to schedule my "very important" first change & look-over for mid January which is when they anticipate that I will have reached 6000 mi.
quasimodem51 12-11-2007, 01:47 PM GTA here as well.. I am not near my Patriot at the moment to check the manual but I believe we Torontonians are on the severe service list and as I recall that places us in the every 5000km bracket. My wife's 98 Cherokee is on the 10,000 km six month list.
I will check tonight.
drlnfil 12-11-2007, 10:21 PM I am pretty sure that when the jeep rep wenmt over thing swith me he said that it would be every 10,000 kms. i wrote in to jeep to get a definative answer as I have 2500 kms on the jeep.
Randoo-N-CJ 12-11-2007, 10:33 PM Our "oil change" light just flashed us this week (actually, I just noticed it this morning) and I am only at 2500 miles. I wonder why that is, considering everyone else seems to be around the 5,000 to 6,000 mile range (or in some cases, longer)?
I'm calling the service dept. tomorrow and find out exactly what's going on.
Keeping Fingers Crossed 12-12-2007, 06:29 AM I dunno.....I see alot of discussions here when they are referring to kilometers.,,don't get the 2 mixed up.
1 mile = 1.609 kilometers
moboden 12-13-2007, 02:22 AM My oil change light came on at 2500 miles also.
Mine also went at 2500 miles. Dealer said it was set for that and he could change it if I wanted but I'm fine with changing oil every 3000 miles. I think 6000 miles is just too much.
sciron4x4 12-15-2007, 04:35 PM When it comes to new cars, it's always nice to get an oil change at 1,000 miles. Just to get a first hand idea of what's going on with it, etc. Otherwise, every 5,000 miles seems to work nicely.
ilflyya 08-14-2008, 09:13 PM Had my Pat for a month and already have near 3K on it! With the job, I anticipate 3K a month, so this is either an oil change/month or every two. I'm gonna go see a dealership and find out. I checked the oil today (2850mi) and it looked brand new! So I don't really think I need to change it yet. We'll see.
Aus Patriot 08-14-2008, 09:23 PM Ours goes in on Tuesday for the first service 10,000km which will include the 1st oil and oil filter change. Our log book shows service intervals for CRD's at 10,000km and Petrol models at 12,000km. Dealer placed a sticker also on the window 6 months or 10,000km as per the manual.
I have phoned every dealer in Perth just to ask what the intervals for the CRD are and they all said 10,000km so I'm sticking to it.
Funny thing is that this same engine is in our VW Jetta MKV and VW and Audi service interval is 15,000km or 6 months.
I wonder what has been changed between Jeep and VW's set up?
Hitzy 08-14-2008, 09:51 PM The only concern I have with running the 10,000km oil change, is the size of our filters.....they are pretty small. If they plug up with gunk and crap, you will have dirty oil circulating through your engine.
I'd really like to find a wider and longer filter for our Jeeps.
TK jeep 11-27-2009, 08:18 AM 3,800 no light yet...so I wonder if its broke
ti-claude31 11-29-2009, 12:16 AM light went on at 4,000 km. first oil change
faceman 12-10-2009, 02:34 PM The oil changes for the petrol cars seems quite early, my diesel needs changes every 9000miles, which I find odd because it is a VW engine, and I had the same engine in an Audi A4 I owned previously and its changes were every 20,000 miles!!! so why the huge difference???
niblips 01-04-2010, 02:21 PM my light came on over the holidays - I'm only at 4100km - Should I take it in?
I've tried to reset the Change oil warning it as it says in the manual, but i can't get it to work.
Also, my Tire Pressure warning light is on and won't go off
It is very cold here, but the tire pressures are correct. Could there be something wrong with the computer?
davecanuck 01-04-2010, 03:04 PM many members erred on the low side for the first change because their JEEP may have sat in the lot for a while but i see you have a MY2010. my 2 cents get it changed.
TPMS seems a little sensitive in some cases, put in 35 psi and see what happens (checking with a pressure gauge you trust)
niblips 01-04-2010, 04:10 PM thanx for the advice dave
I'll call the stealership tomorrow
davecanuck 01-04-2010, 05:13 PM niblips - to quote you if you think it is a "ST" instead of a dealership then just go to a mechanic that your family and friends trust. No need for a "ST"ealership for a basic oil change.
robbie 01-05-2010, 06:44 PM Im confused reading this,I got my brand new jeep patriot 2litre diesel end of october, here in scotland uk,I have a paper from the dealer stating the first service is at 9,000 miles.Usually you would have an early oil change less than 1000 miles just to check it over, most cars bikes ive had,so does anyone think an oil light will come on??I was gonna change the engine oil and filter at about 2000 miles anyway for its first time, its a volkswagen engine so the oil and new filter is probably about 30 quid,i think first oil/filter change should be under 3000 miles.:smiley_thumbs_up:
dixiedawg 01-06-2010, 07:48 AM Mine is an '08, and I was told to change every 3,000-3,500 miles, so that's what I've been doing, which is the same as I do for my other 2 vehicles as well. I've never seen an oil change indicator, so not sure if I have one, or I just change it before it comes on?
Not quite a year and a half old, and I have 34,000 miles on it, so I've had about 11 oil changes so far. When the weather is good I do it myself, but it's not been good much this year, lol.
Afmcronnie 01-06-2010, 02:30 PM I changed mine at 690 miles and figured 3000 more for the first scheduled service. I got the "Change Oil" message at 3673, 17 miles early! I was told that the engine sensors detect when the oil needs to be changed, regardless of miles. I had them put Mobil 1,
5w20 in and they told me with 100% synthetic oil I can go 6000 miles, or less if I get the change oil message.
dixiedawg 01-06-2010, 02:54 PM Hmmm, I might have to try a synthetic then. I've never used one before, just standard oil, Pennzoil or Quaker State from my home state usually.
I didn' t even know there was an oil change indicator. Is that on all models, do you know?
Afmcronnie 01-06-2010, 03:11 PM Dawg: This is from the 2008 Patriot Owners Manual.
Change Oil Message
Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change
indicator system. The “Change Oil” message will flash in
the instrument cluster odometer for approximately 12
seconds after a single chime has sounded to indicate the
next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change
indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the
engine oil change interval may fluctuate dependent upon
your personal driving style.
dixiedawg 01-06-2010, 03:20 PM Thank you kind Sir! The people on this forum are great, I hope I get to meet most of you one day.
I guess I just change it before it needs it. But what the hell, it's not that expensive and doesn't take very long, sort of cheap insurance for the engine.

I can tell that you have never used synthetic. I had a coupon for a FREE oil change, and it STILL cost me $32. Mobil 1 lists for 7.49 qt. at Autozone.

No. There are no sensors actually checking the oil. The computer calculates when it thinks the oil needs changing based on how you drive, etc.
niblips 01-07-2010, 01:23 PM No. There are no sensors actually checking the oil. The computer calculates when it thinks the oil needs changing based on how you drive, etc.
This is good to know...
So what makes you need to change your oil sooner rather then later?
High RPM's or low RPM's?
I always shift at low RPM's and don't usually drive very fast... but my change oil msg came on at 4100km????
Wooden Dog 01-07-2010, 05:59 PM That's about 2500 miles, which is when mine came on the first time or two. They say change it within 500 miles after the signal.
I don't know what all the parameters are for the computer's guess. I'd imagine time spent idling, stopping and accelerating again, etc.
I use synthetic oil and ignore the message, I change it between 4000 and 5000 miles, which is still too soon, but that's what I do.

I guess I'll just wait and see when it comes on again..... The dealership put a sticker in my window for 9669km after the oil change.
dixiedawg 01-08-2010, 10:01 AM Are we sure that the dealer does not just set that Oil Change indicator based on mileage? I think mine goes off at 3,000 miles, no matter what. When I change it myself I reset the indicator, and from when I reset it, it goes off exactly 3,000 miles from then.
homac 01-08-2010, 08:15 PM No, it does not go off at a pre-determined time/distance. See excerpt explaining the system directly from the Manual:
Engine Oil Change Indicator System
Oil Change Required
Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The “Oil Change Required” message will flash in the EVIC display for approximately 10 seconds after a single chime has sounded to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate dependent upon your personal driving style.
Unless reset, this message will continue to display each time you turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position. To turn off the message temporarily, press and release the Trip Odometer button on the instrument cluster. To reset the oil change indicator system (after performing the scheduled maintenance) refer to the following procedure.
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not start the engine).
2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.
NOTE: If the indicator message illuminates when you start the vehicle, the oil change indicator system did not reset. If necessary repeat this procedure.
Are we sure that the dealer does not just set that Oil Change indicator based on mileage? I think mine goes off at 3,000 miles, no matter what. When I change it myself I reset the indicator, and from when I reset it, it goes off exactly 3,000 miles from then.
Afmcronnie 01-08-2010, 10:04 PM To reset the oil change indicator system (after performing the scheduled maintenance) refer to the following procedure.
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not start the engine).
2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.
Isn't this the same procedure used to re-set the computer to the default parameters? So, to cancel the message, we are re-setting the computer? I wonder if re-setting the computer ALSO re-sets the "Duty Cycle" start point?
Wooden Dog 01-08-2010, 10:18 PM I think resetting the computer, you only depress and release the accelerator pedal once, not three.
Hitzy 01-09-2010, 01:40 AM I think resetting the computer, you only depress and release the accelerator pedal once, not three.
It's 3 times...Homac copied right from the manual, my wife and I both have Patiots, it's 3 times within 10 seconds.
Wooden Dog 01-09-2010, 02:43 AM I'm not talking about resetting the oil change message, of course it's 3 times.
I was talking about resetting the computer.
in my book for my newt pat 2010..it says 8000km..
so this is weird to see all those deferent message for deferent miliage.
i got only 125km on it now..so not in hurry.
but would be nice to no the truth.
but watever i will do my first at around 3500 to 4000km if not sooner..the first one is always the more dirty one.
then will use synt oil.........wen i will find out wen and at what miliege its the safest to do.....if i need synt realy still not sher. but do no for cold condition its better for the motor that is 100% sher. and plug them is good to wen its like -20 to -40 outside.
joco.good tread
Tater1800 02-05-2010, 07:28 AM I don't trust service minder indicators. My Pat has 1Kmiles now. I'll likely change at 2500 to get whatever oil out and follow with synthetic. A new engine should have that first oil change early to remove any contaminants and metals. I'll likely change again at 5K to get on an easy schedule. 5K will be the rule from there on.
I'll do the trans somewhere in there too. New gears shed metal while breaking in. This is the microscopic stuff that stays suspended and turns the fluid black.
homac 02-05-2010, 09:11 AM For those who use synthetic oil, especially a Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum or Amsoil should have more flexability. Changing at 10,000 km in line with maintenance schedule A is acceptable, especially when a synthetic oil 5W-30 oil is used.
blackscpatriot 02-05-2010, 09:38 AM I find it funny that the computer goes off at 3000 mile, but the manual shows 5000 mile service intervals with conventional oil
Johnnie 02-05-2010, 11:08 AM I find it funny that the computer goes off at 3000 mile, but the manual shows 5000 mile service intervals
Maybe it's the same thing I just wrote here (http://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/showthread.php?p=211684#post211684), that computer goes off 50% earlier if you've done reset yourself instead of dealer? That was for diesel engines but who knows if it's the same with you who have the system for gasoline?
I'm going to use 15 000 km or one year service intervals (~9300 miles) which is common for modern engines and oils. My service manual supports that too.
Mobil 1 lists for 7.49 qt. at Autozone.
Lucky you. Oil in my Patriot (Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30) costs $24 per qt. :( If you get 4 liters (1.1 us gallons) and find the right store, you might get <$20 per qt.
nimrodtoo 02-06-2010, 09:19 PM Well did my first change today. 1020 miles. going to synthetic and wanted to change before first big trip next week. I was pretty surprised to see the 'skid plate' underneath but pleased that there were holes for the drain plug and the oil filter. Had to get a filter tool since the filter was cranked on, but other than that uneventful. Hopefully we'll see the mileage go up over the 20 MPG mark now!
Oh and the dealer had a sticker for 3000mi on the windshield too. I figure with the synthetic it will get an oil change twice a year whether it needs it or not!
