I found a great deal on last years infinity reference series speakers 6913i's (6923i replace them). I looked at crutchfields vehicle selector and it said it wouldn't fit. I figured hey, they have a free technical chat, so I asked why. They said that the magnet diameter was too big. Now i've only taken the speakers apart once, but I seem to remember the enclosure was pretty big. Did anyone else run into clearance issues with the magnet? Did anyone need to trim the plastic molding around the speaker?

Crutchfield's speaker selector is HIGHLY conservative. They said that the Blaupunkt GTx 693s wouldn't fit in the front doors. They fit perfectly. Others have fit large 4 way Pioneers without a hitch (that Crutchfield says won't fit at all). There's plenty of room there for large 6x9 speakers.
Looking at their site, the Infinitys aren't much larger on the backside (and honestly, where was that price a month ago?). I'd give them a shot and they'll probably fit.

Well, I couldn't pass on the deal. I figured I would be losing money if I didn't buy them. Probably won't get them installed until after Christmas.

The install takes all of 30 minutes for all 4 doors. All you need is a flat bladed screwdriver (for prying off the grills) and a torx-head screwdriver for the screws (don't remember the exact size, but it was one of the larger ones). It's a piece of cake and the sound is SO much better with aftermarket speakers.

Yea, I've taken the speakers out once to see what I had to work with. But it was quick, and I didn't take any measurements, so I was hesitant to order when they said it wouldn't fit. In fact, I tried about 20 different chrysler, jeep, and dodge vehicles that take 6x9's and it didn't show as fitting either. So it's either highly conservative, or just wrong.
I also have a new head unit too, so I'll probably install them all at the same time. It's funny, I think I've only used the stereo in the patriot twice maybe three times, and I've already bought a replacement. Not to get off track, but what are people doing to ground the head units? Just using the ground from the harness, or pulling up the carpet and using a screw with a star washer and going directly to the frame/chassis?

I bought some Polk audio 6x9’s (db691) last weekend (buy 1 pair, get a 2nd half price) that Crutchfield says wont fit. They have big magnets and fit fine in the rear. A bit tight in the front. Just a small amount of plastic to cut and they would be perfect. There is a metal bar in the door the magnet is immediately attracted to, but fits in once you shimy it in. I have to take them back though for the sound, which I will put in another post.

Well I finally got around to installing the speakers. I only got one done before it starting raining. These speakers do fit... but they require some modification to the plastic around the speaker cavity. I didn't have to do extensive trimming, but more than I had originally though. The problem doesn't seem to lie with the magnet, but the frame of the speaker itself.
