I am ready for one.

Why can't/won't they sell the turbo diesel Patriot in the US?

If they offered the diesel, I would buy one but, I guess I'll stick with my 2K XJ for the time being.

I think there was something on Edmund's about the Caliber/Compass/Patriot diesel being a VW engine and DCX agreeing not to sell them here (US) because VW does? Might be wrong......

We'd buy the Patriot CRD in a heart beat!

I keep hearing/reading that there is something big coming in the way of diesel for the US in 2008. Some change to the laws/rules/regs... not sure Seems that many companies are holding out for that change.

So I've been reading/hearing that diesel engines can run without modification on filtered cooking oil. So my question is how much used cooking oil is generated everyday?

Would it be feasible for McDonalds, Wendy's and all other restaurants and food makers to sell their used cooking oil to a company who then filters and distributes it?

Are the emissions from burning cooking oil safer than gas?

How expensive would the filtering process be compared to oil refinement?

Just a "crazy" idea.

Yeah so I've read more up on the idea, and it's not realistic unless the engines are modded if the cars are to be reliable (due to the viscosity of cooking oil compared to diesel). So please just ignore my stupidity :-)

The Mythbusters were running a Jetta on cooking oil....Seemed to do just fine. I have small diesel tractors and they will run on used motor oil if you filter it. Doing that makes me uneasy though. Having been around diesels somewhat I have to say I kind of like gas. Diesel fuel stinks and manages to get into everything. Get it on your hands or clothes while fueling and you will smell all day. Then there is the maintaining of the things. It's always some problem with water in the fuel and fuel filters. You have to monitor that constantly. Yes, gas for me. At this point it is just less of a hassle.

If high school students can do it on an extremely limited budget why can't the big auto manufacturers?!?!?
