The Jeep Patriot Limited (Trail Rated) comes with the filter, however other models have the slot for a filter, however it is empty.

Purchase the filter (Part #05058381AA).

Uh... not exactly correct. The Limited only "comes with" the filter if the Limited is equipped with the off road package. Otherwise, it has the same empty slot as all the rest of the Patriots that don't have the off road package. I added the filter to my 2008 Limited the first week I had the vehicle. Cost was about $15.00, and the dealer I got the filter from used the info I gave him to put 2 more in his stock.

Any major benefit to having this air filter?

homac

A couple benefits actually:

Less dust in the cabin (especially if you drive offroad in dusty conditions)
Reduction in pollutants from outside entering the car
Less build up of dust/debris in the vents over time

Any major benefit to having this air filter?

Thanks, homac, for the investigation into the cabin air filter. I have a Sport and was a bit disapointed at not having a cabin filter but, too lazy to dig into the dash to see the possibilities. Thanks again. I'll pick up the filter and hook up.

What are the dimensions of the filter (W x L x T)?
Could possibly use some of that cut to size filter media.

Hello JoeBecker.....

The filter is a box design so you cannot cut your own.

It is similar to a furnace filter, however much smaller. You may find it cheaper and easier to puchase one as they are cheap. If you still wish to try and build your own you can measure the dimensions of the filter bracket by following the instructions posted earlier.

The reason I even thought of "cut my own" is because of your picture with the filter on the seat. I would not be trying to make my own pleated filter. The "cut my own" I was referring to is the woven or foam filter media that you can buy and cut to size for furnaces. It does not have as good of a MERV as the pleated but it is better than nothing.

I asked about the dimensions because at one point you had the filter on hand. Measuring the actual filter will be easier than trying to measure the cavity it goes into. Since you have already put yours in, I would not expect you to pull it back out.

I did a little searching and found the information: 8.625" x 7.625" x 1"

Sounds good Joe....

You may still want to measure the opening as I did find the Mopar filter was slightly small and could have been made to fit better.

If you decide to purchase the Mopar filter they do not seem to cost that much.

Owners of Aussie models can forget this,
I went and had a look, and my 07 Sport has the filter.
I would suspect the Euro models would too.

Another win for Australia!!!

Cutting your own filter would be ok, but the standard dealer supplied one includes not just dust filtering but also activated charcoal to filter out chemical fumes and odors.

Re-hashing this old thread.....cause my dealer wants a rediculous price for the cabin air filters. I picked up a 20x16 merv 6 pleated furnace filter for $5 and I'm going to try making a few on my own. They cut real easy with a utility knife, and this one has glue reinforcing each 1/4. I'm going to try just the filter material for a few days first and see what happens.
Ideally I'd like to make some kind of reusable box (wood or metal) to hold the cut filters, solid on 3 sides and hinged on the other. That way I could just pop it out, stuff a cut filter in it, and pop it back in. I can make 2 filters for $5 out of this, much better deal then the $20 dealer quoted me.....:)

Hitzy if you find a way let us know. Some of those furnace filters could make 4 Patriot filters. The 3M brand ones are very highly rated.

Where would one find this slot and what would the filter be called. I can't seem to find anything about it in the owner's manual.

i bought one for my Compass. but haven't installed it yet. i believe it's located behind the glove box. just have to drop the box down to gain access to the slot where it goes......i think. ;)

yes..
it is located directly behind the glove box.
You open the glove box, remove everything that is in it and place it on the seat.
The glove box door has Stops that limit the amount that it opens.
One on each side of the door.
Carefully push both of the stops (it is hard, they will move, but DON'T BREAK THEM)
Once the door is all the way open you will see a rectangle door.
It as tabs you press to open the slot.
I plan to replace my cabin filter every 6 months.
On my wife's tahoe, it was 100K miles and 6 years before I even knew it had a cabin filter....

If you can get the Napa (FIL4578) filter for under $15 and it fits that would be a pretty good deal. Even $17 for the Mopar factory filter is not too bad. A good quality furnace filter is more than that.

The dimensions don't look right.....the filters are 8.5"x7.5" approx.

Prior to this thread, ive noticed alot of dust was coming inside out of the vents everytime i put the AC on. I just bought one from my dealership, $27 including tax (what a rip off). I just installed it, very easy. Thanks everyone for your helpful information and Hitzy for the install link. Cheers!

Every Patriot/Compass has the slot for the filter. It is only included in the FDII package in the US, but standard for all European models.

I bought one and the dimensions are exactly the same as the Mopar #05058693AA and NOT as above.

The Mopar one is about $17 and I am not sure it is even an activated charcoal one.

It only took a couple of minutes to swap out, but the glove compartment door is tricky.

Got mine at the dealer, $16.

Also went to order the cargo cover and was told to wait until it is classified as an "accessory" vs OEM part when the cost will drop. Can that be true?
