question for everybody, is there a sizeable difference in 17"all terrain over 16"standard tires?

if you're looking for a 4x2 that won't go offroad, go with the 17" alloy wheels for looks.

if you plan to upgrade tires to go offroad, go with 16" wheels and get taller profile tires for more air between the Jeep and the road

I will add to that, the tires that come with the 16" wheels are road tires. Just a good all season tire, nothing more. I drove mine for about 20K on the original tires and then switched to a Goodrich P215-75R16. It gives me a nice tall, white letter, tire with a better tread for mud and snow. If you keep the tires the same width, it helps keep your mileage up there.

My wife has a Compass with the 17s. They look nice on a car, but I think it looks like the wheel is too big and the tire too low profile for a Jeep. Traction wise, I think the tires that come on the 17s are slightly more aggressive for traction than the 16s.

I think the SR/A's on the 17" rims were excellent tires traction wise. Much better than the summer passenger tires that come stock on the 16" rims (and some 17" rims).

However, the SR/A's really lacked in the puncture resistance side of things for me. Too many flats. My SR/A's still have half their treadlife, and are sitting in my shed.

go with the 17"' and still go off road you can get a good tire for the 17 rim.

a 28 "tall 16" tire will have more side wall (flex) than a 28" tall 17" . Ive had a lot of bent rims from chuck holes and low profile tires

When it comes time to upgrade your tires, 16" rims offer ALOT more options.
