Cheapest Jeep to start at $14,958

DETROIT -- Production of the Jeep Patriot has begun this week at the Chrysler group's Belvidere, Ill., plant. Chrysler said the base price will be $14,958, including shipping. That makes it Jeep's least-expensive model.
Some Patriots will begin appearing in dealerships before Jan. 1, but the official marketing launch will not take place until the first quarter of 2007 after dealership volumes have built up.
The Patriot has more traditional Jeep styling than the edgy Compass. Unlike the Compass, the Patriot will be sold in a trail-rated version.
The $14,985 Patriot will have front-wheel drive. The top-of-the-line Patriot limited 4x4 is priced at $23,530, including shipping. There will be two- and four-wheel-drive versions of both the Sport and Limited models.
