Auto Show: Celebrities Under the Hood
New York, April 12-14, 2006 – The New York International Auto Show opened this week with appearances by celebrities who probably don’t drive themselves. Eva Mendes wanted to christen the new 2007 Jeep Patriot like a ship, smashing it with a bottle of champagne. But Jeep suits wouldn’t listen to Eva’s bubbly idea, and deemed it more appropriate to launch the new model by dumping a few tons of mud all over it. NYFD firefighters then pulled out their hoses and sprayed off the mud. (We told Jeep that the way to get the most attention for their car launch would be to pour the mud all over Eva Mendes, then have the firefighters wash her down with the champagne, but for some reason, they wouldn’t listen to us, either.) Anyway, if mudslides are a part of your commute, the Patriot may be the car for you.
Legendary ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons met up with legendary racecar driver Parnelli Jones at the show. Gibbons was at the Javits Center pitching for XM Satellite radio, and Jones was nearby, unveiling a new limited edition Mustang, the Saleen/Parnelli Jones model that, er, goes really fast.
Volvo moved their Volvo for Life event to the classy Rainbow Room, and it was a much more reserved affair than their previous, open-to-Times Square bashes. Also more refined was this year’s star performer, rocker Avril Lavigne, who was all girly, made up and blow-dried, and toned things down with an acoustic set, including some a cappella warbling. Quite a difference from the snarling, finger-flipping rock chick we're used to. Benjamin Bratt emceed the Volvo proceedings.
The Auto Show runs through April 23. More info at http://www.autoshowny.com

I love the part about "...if mudslides are a part of your commute, the Patriot may be the car for you." Even though I think they got the Wrangler 4-door mixed up with the Patriot.
