I am having a hard time locating R17 tires that are one or two sizes larger than stock. Let's face it. Jeeps look better with larger than stock tires. That and I would like to add, a little better off-road traction plus any extra ground clearance that boasts the angles is a huge bonus.
The stock tires for the FDII are 215/65R17. They (typically) run out like this:
Section Width: 8.46 in
Overall Diameter: 28.00 in
Actual Speed: 60 mph
Here's the options:
specific tire dimensions will vary between manufacturers. These are general sizing...
225/70R16
Section Width: 8.85 in
Overall Diameter: 28.40 in
Diameter Difference: 1.41%
Speedometer: 59.1 mph
235/70R16
Section Width: 9.25 in
Overall Diameter: 28.95 in
Diameter Difference: 3.29%
Speedometer: 58.0 mph
225/75R16
Section Width: 8.85 in
Overall Diameter: 29.28 in
Diameter Difference: 4.38%
Speedometer: 57.3 mph
215/85R16
Section Width: 8.46 in
Overall Diameter: 30.38 in
Diameter Difference: 7.84%
Speedometer: 55.2 mph
I am leaning towards the 235/70R16 or the 225/75R16 to work. It will depend on where it rubs oh course - first on compression (front or back), than on the inside when turning. Only one way to see... put it on the rack and try them out.
Many places advise against going more than 3% from the stock due to extra stress on the brakes and other components. Some places will not install anything that is not considered stock for that vehicle.
Now... I just need to search out the options to see who makes one I like and that works. I am going to avoid the all-time favorite - the BFG T/A ko's. They are a really good tire all around and are great for most general off-roading needs. Their down fall for the Patriot is their weight. These are really heavy tires. Too heavy for a vehicle where you are watching the gas mileage.
I am not going to go to a real agressive tread like a BFG M/T or the Yokohama Geolandar M/T+... Maybe the Geolandar A/T...
What are going to put on yours and why?
