OK, another speaker thread.

I picked up two pair of Blaupunkt GTx693 from Crutchfield. With their included speaker wiring harnesses (very useful; had I needed to wire them manually it would have been a real pain) the install was a piece of cake; about 30 minutes for all four speakers. Although Crutchfield says that the 693 won't fit up front, it fits perfectly. I don't know who did their fit measurements, but they need a nice tall glass of "Go back and do it again."

With the stock head unit (6 disc changer), the sound is GREATLY improved. There's just no comparison. Clarity is fantastic and the bass response is likewise improved. For $130 shipped and a half hour of your time, it is a simple and inexpensive upgrade that will make a world of difference to the sound.

Thanks for that Akula, I don't think I'll bother paying the premium for the Boston set up now. It's an option on the LTD only here for €1600!
I think the subwoofer at the rear would probably cause conflict with my Schnauzer Woofer anyhow!

I'll probably go for the Sport with the "Comfort Pack" option

AGOG: Um, where do you keep your two canaries? Isn't a good system supposed to have two tweeters and a woofer? :)

It's my Auntie Mary she has the canaries
Up the leg of her drawers
but when she farted they departed
Down the leg of her drawers

Glad you find it useful. While you can't shake the entire neighborhood like you could with a dedicated powered subwoofer, the stock head unit is powerful enough to drive aftermarket speakers without any problems whatsoever. While I haven't heard the BA system, I fail to see how clarity and definition would be any improved, and note that the Blaupunkt GTx series are some of the cheaper 6x9s on the market. I do tend to be a bit of an audio snob (not necessarily car audio, but I've got a rather nice home theater system), and the Blaus are as good as I hope to expect in a vehicle.
