Is this on sale in the US yet or when is it due. Came over quite well in the review...competing here with the likes of Land Rover Freelander.
Friend has a Freelander and its really nice.. quiet 2.2 diesel from peugeot/citroen great on and off road.

This is on sale in the US, right now. It is the Liberty over here.

Correct.
The Patriot itself is probably the closest thing to an XJ you'll see in the US for a while.

From what I have seen and read about the 08 Liberty, IT is the closet thing to the XJ. Heck, at least it still has one live axle, a 6 cyl (albeit V6) engine, and a true low range.

98 XJ with 259,150 miles and counting.

Just another version of the Dodge Nitro, which came out first. To me it's just ugly, and uglier. I'm just waiting for the day, when the Patriot is old enough ,that someone guts the drive train. Then puts front and rear live axles, with a transfer case under there. Now that will be a modern Cherokee.

2002-2007 Jeep Liberty is better for adding the Straight Front Axle than the Patriot would be for adding both front and rear straight axles.. The Uniframe of the Jeep Liberty is much stronger than either the Patriot or older Cherokee. You would have to do a bunch of fab work to build body braces for the extra stress on the Patriot Unibody. Better engine choice in the Liberty also...I guess the 2.4L with some Suzuki sized front and rear axles might work...
I do like the pic from ExpeditionsWest in your post tho...
