: Extra lights in Finland

This post is about the stupid legal issues in Finland and as such not applicable to civilized countries.

There is no reference number marked on any the light housings that I can see. This would mean each light is assumed to have a reference number of 20, right? Fog lights can be used at the same time as driving lights, so the sum of existing lights is 80. This does not bode well for adding any lights... (As you may be aware, the rules were recently changed so that 100 is the allowed total sum of simultaneously activated lights.)

Question 1: The stealership does sell additional high beam lights, however. Does anyone have any more detailed information on what kind of lights they use, their reference numbers, and how they modify the existing setup to make those legal?

Question 2: There would also be a possibility of mounting two reference number 10 extra high beam lights. Such things do actually exist, apparently, although they are rare for obvious reasons... The light beam would be quite wide, so perhaps not very useful for seeing far ahead - but they might be able to help widen the light beam to better cope with tight turns on small roads and trails with hard turns, and thus be useful in off-roadish situations. Does someone have experience with such lights? Would they be a helpful addition to a vehicle that already has fog lights?

Just fit bumper mounted spot lights!!----However it seem like your lighting laws are more complicated than ours here in UK.......

 To my knowledge fog lights have never been counted in when calculating reference numbers. And check this AKE's bulletin (http://www.ake.fi/NR/rdonlyres/5F61A0FA-61AB-479C-9FF2-9679839E1D63/0/ATT72009_katsastajille.pdf) for instance. Quote: "...samaan aikaa päälle kytkettävissä olevien kaukovalaisimien..."

So if Patriot's own lights really don't have markings, yes they are considered as 20 + 20. That leaves 30 + 30 for extra high beams.

If you want official confirmation, just ask AKE (http://www.ake.fi/ake). They have always answered me quickly.

The reference number for Patriots own driving lights is 17.5

This is theoretically clearly marked to the lights, but in practice it is very difficult to fund the marking. Fortunately, I had the Jeep in a warm garage yesterday so we could take our time looking for the marking. :)

Say Tony, what do you think about the fog light thing? If I was right, that would leave 32.5 + 32.5 for extra lights - annoyingly not enough for ref. 37.5 Hella Rallye's though.

The phrase you quoted seems to me to be fairly unambiguous; only the high beams are counted towards that maximum reference number.

I have a couple of different plans for extra lights - here the legislation is a bit vague though. Am I allowed to put two pairs of extra lights on if only one pair is functional at any given time? (And do people who do vehicle inspections care about these convoluted, totally irrational regulations? :icon_rolleyes: ) The simplest would be to just get one pair of lights, either reference number 30 for extra throw or 17.5 to just get some more light with a similar pattern as the original lights. (The pro's and con's of the two different lights are of course that ref 30 lights would throw light further out - but with less side spill, so best for long straight stretches with no oncoming traffic. Kind of iffy here down south, but would be quite nice in Lapland for example. The ref 17.5 lights don't reach as far but work better with traffic, curves, and for spotting animals on the side of the road.) I am leaning towards the 17.5's just because I live so far south - and I really would prefer to see the damn elks before they climb onto the road...

Or, I could get a pair of ref 10 lights for those small winding roads and a second pair with a bit more throw for faster speeds. Ref 10 lights would be really cool in more of an off-roading or really small road type of situations (http://www.offroadpaja.fi/Valomutka.htm, http://www.offroadpaja.fi/Valosuora.htm) but I think they might put too much light right in front of the vehicle to be very useful at higher speeds? Hence the need for a second pair of lights for more normal driving conditions.

I'm still not sure about that. Many people on the internet forums seem to say that it's legal. And some say it would also be legal to have both pairs of extra lights on at the same time if the car's own long beams are switched off. I haven't yet found the old "questions and answers" section from the AKE (Trafi) web pages, that could've helped.
