: Turbo Noise
Bozzy 11-06-2007, 06:27 AM Hi, I may be in solitary company here because I have a CRD.
However, I was wondering if anyone who has one too has noticed a loud slushing noise coming from the turbo under even the lightest of acceleration?
I drove my sister in law's to compare it to mine and although it does make a turbo noise (as expected from a Turbo Diesel) her noise is not as loud.
Can anyone relate to this?
Cheers
Chris
tasar 11-06-2007, 06:31 AM get the same as your sister - small noise only - get it looked at get intercooler hoses checked - Cherokee ones keep blowing in Australia
Bozzy 11-06-2007, 06:42 AM Thanks could this be related to the fact that my car steams up quite a lot when I put the blowers on in any conditions?
Could be a divertor valve. The turbo aspirated Passats would make increased turbo noise when the valve was going bad. Just a thought.
Bozzy 11-06-2007, 07:44 AM Thanks - Could be why my MPG is not great too
Bozzy 11-06-2007, 09:25 AM It's booked in for Friday 16th so they should sort it out
can you describe "slushing noise" in more detail?
viprjrgirl 11-06-2007, 08:23 PM I am lost, but what is a CRD?
allpaw 11-06-2007, 10:26 PM Common Rail Diesel.
2.0Litre diesel engine mated to a six speed transmission as used in the VW Golf.
Cheers,
Tim.

I guess it's like a slushing/whistling noise that occurs under light acceleration.
Most Turbo Diesels make a noise, usually whistling, but after testing my sister in laws mine is quite loud and I'm only getting 34mpg in 1200 miles
NightMR 11-09-2007, 08:18 PM Sounds like a diverter valve/ wastegate issue to me. It would account for both the sound and poor mileage...Does yours feel more sluggish than your sisters too?

Not quite. Based on the members of this site, it would appear that every non-American on the planet has a CRD. We, of course, don't get the option. However, since every car company has announced they are selling diesels in the U.S. by 2010 (heck we're even getting a diesel Accord!), hope reigns eternal.

Hi yes hers did feel a bit more lively to be honest, but I just thought that she'd broken it in more ha ha - guess it needs looking at.
Mine seems to run out of steam quicker, so I presume this is because boost pressure is not as good with the faulty valve.
I don't understand how something with 9 miles on the clock can be faulty in this way though (it's made the noise since I picked it up a few weeks ago)
Hi I know this is an old thread but... My 2.0 CRD 6 speed Ltd does exactly the same! and it seams to be getting a little worse (or maybe the fact that I am now very aware of it) what was the outcome?
- George - 02-21-2009, 06:29 AM My 2 cents worth:
dont baby it, diesels are designed to be driven hard.
Change gears at 2500rpms, and once its warmed up a fair bit, change at 3000rpm's sometimes as i've noticed it clears the backlog of soot
Tan, I had the same problem, one of the hoses had popped off in the engine bay. Apparently the clips that are used to hold them in place fail quite often.
ok thanks i tend to drive it quiet hard and change gear at around 2500-3000
my other concern being the MPG seams to be getting worse with the noise... I thrash it for a few days then if still nothing i'll take it in.
Thanks Ash, I think i might take it in in that case as the MGP is getting lower too!
Also having a problem with a horrible squeaking noise from what sounds like the front drivers side wheel... not always there but it drives me nuts! the dealership have tried to fob me off but i'm gong to persist untill they sort it!
thanks again
Tan
Tan did you get some sort of break down cover when you bought it? I did and I rang the Jeep helpline and they came and sorted out the issue. Basically there was a loud 'wooshing' noise from the engine when I accelerated, and the MPG was down. As mentioned above one of the hoses to either the turbo or the intercooler had come loose. It was at the very bottom of the engine and not easily seen from the top of the engine bay.
Its still under warrantee and it has the breakdown cover with it yes.
yeah thats the same mine does the same on acceleration! and its drinking deisel like theres no tomorrow!
I'll call them then on the Jeep helpline... is that the same as the break down cover?
I brought it from a Jeep dealership but i think i'll try the same as you instead.. as it worked for you!
Thanks so much... everyone else just said 'well its a Turbo Diesel what else do you expect' but I was sure it wasn't right!
Thanks again!
tan
I called the dealership and they told me to call out the Jeep assist! So i'll do that 1st thing tomorrow morning!
Can't wait to not have to watch the deisel gauge before my eyes!
They're goign to 'have a look at the squeak' too!
Thanks for you help! :smiley_thumbs_up:
