I used to have an old Jeep pick up, and then later I had a Comanche for awhile. The Comanche was a 6, but not good mileage, had some V8's that were better, and the 4wd was not great either.

And the other Jeeps listed in the next link, I drove in the Army, there should be lots of those around as they are not used anymore, and those would be good for someone to work on. The Army has, or had, all the parts, manuals, etc for those. I drove those through a lot of crap, and they always went well.
