: Oil change after 10,000kms?
kaushen79 10-23-2007, 11:46 AM So the service/warranty manual for my '08 Patriot says that my first oil change should be at 10,000kms...that seems a bit odd to me.
Is it 10,000kms cause they use synthetic oil?
What has everyone else done?
MikeV 10-23-2007, 12:11 PM Check your service book. It says every 5,000kms. I just took mine in for the 5,000km chekup. The dealer will stamp the book every time you take it in. If they did not give you a book ask for one. If you miss a check up you may void your warrenty.
MikeV 10-23-2007, 12:13 PM Sorry. I have the 07. But it's all the same.
kaushen79 10-23-2007, 12:29 PM Sorry. I have the 07. But it's all the same.
See that is the thing, the 2007 models say that the first oil change should be at 5000kms, but the 2008 models state 10,000kms for the first one.
Maybe I'll call the dealer and see what they say.
My VW new beetle had the 1st oil change at 16k and My BMW was at 24K!
10k for a modern engine is really not that much. I have 3500km on mine and the oil still looks new.
I suspect that the 5k requirement was because it was a new model and they wanted to play it safe.
I have seen Harley Davidson do that. The maintenance requirement are strict for a new engine/tranny but eventually relax once they realize everything is ok.

You also spend more money on oil and/or more money at a garage the more often you change your oil.
Two industries auto manufacturers don't mind keeping in good graces.
quasimodem51 10-25-2007, 08:25 AM My 07 says every 5000 Ks. At 10K you get tire rotation. At 15K you get egg roll.
The wife's 98 Cherokee is every 10K or every 6 months. Because I drive in and around the city of Toronto, my maintenance schedule is established as *severe* meaning every 5000 klicks. Sigh.
Nightshift 10-27-2007, 07:40 AM My 08 maintenance book is every 10,000 km /6 month MAX.
OR Change the oil went the warning message go on in the dash.
But i always figure that oil is sheap instead of a engine
Synthetic oil every 5000 km is for me.
Dont mix the maintenance book that the dealer make print for themselve (usely with there dealer logo on it)with the owner manuel that come with your car from the manufacturer.
fnkychkn 10-27-2007, 10:20 AM as with most '08 chrysler vehicles, the '08 patriot is equipped with an oil change indicator system.
from '08 fsm:
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE - NAFTA - KOREAN GAS
The oil change indicator system will remind you that it is time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance.
On Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) equipped vehicles, ?Oil Change Required? will be displayed in the EVIC and a single chime will sound, indicating that an oil change is necessary.
On Non-EVIC equipped vehicles, ?Change Oil? will flash in the instrument cluster odometer and a single chime will sound, indicating that an oil change is necessary.
Based on engine operation condition, the oil change indicator message will illuminate; this means that service is required for your vehicle. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 mi (805 km).
NOTE:
The oil change indicator message will not monitor the time since the last oil change. Change your vehicles oil if it has been six months since your last oil change and even if the oil change indicator message is NOT illuminated.
Change your engine oil more often if you drive your vehicle off-road for an extended period of time.
Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 6,000 mi (10 000 km) or six months, whichever comes first.
Your authorized dealer will reset the oil change indicator message after completing the scheduled oil change. If this scheduled oil change is performed by someone other than your authorized dealer, the message can be reset by referring to the steps described below.
OIL CHANGE INDICATOR - RESET
Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The ?Oil Change Required? message will flash in the EVIC display for approximately 10 seconds after a single chime has sounded to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate dependent upon your personal driving style.
Unless reset, this message will continue to display each time you turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position. To turn off the message temporarily, press and release the Menu button. To reset the oil change indicator system (after performing the scheduled maintenance) perform the following procedure:
Turn the ignition switch to the ?ON? position (Do not start the engine).
Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds.
Turn the ignition switch to the ?LOCK? position.
NOTE: If the indicator message illuminates when you start the vehicle, the oil change indicator system did not reset. If necessary repeat this procedure.
viprjrgirl 10-27-2007, 11:45 PM Recently there was this story about how you should not change your oil every 3000 miles or I guess 5000kms, because that is just too much and your owners manual says to different. For example the acura say to change it ever 7500 miles. Which seems like a lot. But my thing is, both companies, the oil companies and the car service companies are out to make money, getting your oil changed often is cheaper than replacing an engine because you did not change the oil as often as you should.
quasimodem51 10-29-2007, 08:20 AM Oil changes are at "no cost" for me for 4 years. I just have to endure the lineups at the dealer is all. The interval is 5000km (or every 3 months). I shall comply because, in the event there is warranty work (I have warranty coverage for 4 years or 80,000km), I will not get any hassle since the dealer did all that maintenance. The moment I am out of warranty I will switch to synthetic oil and probably maintain the interval. But, it will not be the dealer doing the oil changes.
phil.sheard 11-11-2007, 10:54 PM just bought a patriot in the uk dealer says service every 8000mls.

That is a CRD?

Did your Pat come with synthetic oil or is that something you requested?
wpg jeep girl 11-13-2007, 03:47 PM I just got my 2008 Patriot and I as well was confused when I read the maintenance schedule and it said first at 10000k. The 08's are not running synthetic off the lot, apparently with the new engines they feel confident in changing the old 3monthes/5000k rule to 6 monthes/10000k.... Regard;ess of what the book says I'll be getting mine every 5k, that's what I've always done with my Jeeps and I just got rid of my last one and it had 320,000k on it. So somehtings workin right! :)

Well...same here..owners manual says the 1st one is @ 10,000, sticker on the window they put says 5,000 km. Im not taking any chances and Ill do the 1st one @ 5,000.
kaushen79 01-02-2008, 10:10 AM My Pat is at he dealersip right now getting some repairs to it, I have just over 8,000kms on it. I told the mechanic that while my Pat is there that they should just do the oil change too. The mechanic asked me if the oil change light came on, I said no, and he said that the oil change isn't required as yet and that I should wait. So i guess it'll be 10,000kms for me.

The "oil change" topic was perhaps the topic I have found most confusing, from the get-go, when I first drove my 2008 vehicle off the lot.
After thinking and reading about this, Yan's post makes the most sense to me.
Here's what the manual says:
1350
quasimodem51 01-03-2008, 01:34 PM My Pat is at he dealersip right now getting some repairs to it, I have just over 8,000kms on it. I leased my 07 Patriot from Brampton Chrysler. It is a 48 month lease and I have 16 oil changes for free (approximately 1 oil change every 5000kms).
kaushen79 01-11-2008, 08:29 AM So I just reached about 8,900km and my cluster flashed "Oil Change".
I'm taking her in tomorrow morning to get the change, I am going to ask the mechanics whether I should do it more frequently.
MyJeepyJeep 02-03-2008, 01:15 AM i am getting free oil changes for 100 000 km's :D
thats sweetness....
anyways yep im in every 5000 km's
Kelland 02-09-2008, 01:35 PM how did you get free oil changes? My dealer/salesperson would not give it to me even when I asked for it.
