...did you hear that JK brought Dumbledore out of the closet?!

Yeah I heard about that, and I don't know that I really believe it.
It seems like a publicity stunt so people still focus on her.

Um. What's a Dumblebore?

HA!!! A "Dumbledore" is Professor Dumbledore, one of the main characters from Harry Potter... have you been under a rock, m'dear?

I'm not so sure if it was a publicity stunt... with two more movies and a theme park still in the works, I think JK has plenty of years left for attention!

;)

Here's what I don't get...
(First a disclaimer that I have not read any of the books and only seen 15 mins of the movies, so I should probably stop here....)
BUT......
The books are done right?
This is a fictional character she created?
What is the purpose of stating something hidden about a character whose literary life has ended?
Couldn't she also say..'Oh yea and Harry Potter was actually a girl and raised by wolves till he/she was 5 days old'
No one can argue, it's her character, and it doesn't change what is written in the books.....and she is not writing any more so it has no future value....

It seems like a publicity stunt so people still focus on her.

Thank you, yes... better said than my rambling.... I mean how much more 'hidden background' information will she keep revealing? .. and what really is the point?

Um. What's a Dumblebore?

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger there.

Like n.n.j., I haven't read any of the books (though my wife has them all) and n.n.j. has seen about 14 more minutes of the movies than I have.
I too had no clue what a "doubledoor" or whateverthehellyoucall it is.

And a character is gay now huh? So that'll probably mean the Boy Scouts won't be doing any field trips to the new Theme Park, eh? :icon_rolleyes:

Ah. No, I thought it was a kid's series like goosebumps or something...never had an interest in reading them. The movies were pretty lame that I saw. Books any good?

hahahaha "Goosebumps!!!" Talk about a blast from the past!

Well, I refused to read the Potter series for a long time simply because there was so much hype about it. When I finally caved in, I felt like such an a$$ because the books really are amazing. And for the record, I'm a literary snob so that's saying a lot! :p

People that I thought would never like watching Harry Potter have liked it.

You'd probably like the Thomas Covenant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Thomas_Covenant%2C_the_Unbelieve r) series then. Read those a long time ago. Maybe the Book of the Sword (http://www.librarything.com/tag/Books+of+the+Swords+series) series as well... Ever tried Xanth (http://www.msu.edu/~yeagerk1/xan.html)?

Collecting dust in someone's garage right now haven't seen them in ages, but they were a good read too.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm a book worm and always looking for new ones... my friend just got me into Anne Bishop; I also love Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Gregory Maguire, and Dan Simmons. :D

A stupid move... I don't see how this can possibly gain her any fan support. I don't think the gay community is going to come out and praise a fictional book character as one of their heroes. And the conservative families who are already turned off by stories of witchcraft and wizardry will be even more disgusted by "gay" characters.

The books and the Harry Potter story should just have been left alone.

You know, that was the first thing I thought of - those who already had a problem with certain themes will now have even more of a reason to dislike and complain...

It's not just that.. He is a gay character 'after the fact'.
If she did not right it into the context of the book and has to announce it after, well that does not count in my opinion.

What is to stop any author from making changes to characters after they have written the book just to keep interest surrounding them.

"Oh yea... Ahab.. forgot to mention ..gay"

She has always sounded like quite the publicity mongrel to me and this does not change that thought.

I'm so cornfused. Is the Dumbledore character gay or the actor who plays Dumbledore gay? No Potterhead am I. In either case and in the grand scheme of things, do any of us really need to know any of this?

AFTER the books were written and read, she found it neccessary to announce one of the CHARACTERS was gay. Since it wasn't in the books, she obviously meant in her mind as she was writing, she was thinking of a gay character. I guess... (?)

I'm not so sure about that. Now, that the Harry Potter series is done. sparking this controversy opens up the opportunity to write a prequel series! People may not have clamored over it without some huge tug to peak their interest, right?

You guys are cracking me up!!!

Now, the book series might be done, but the films aren't... they still have to release "The Half Blood Prince" and "The Deathly Hallows." And the HP theme park is opening up in Islands of Adventure / Orlando, FL in 2009 or so.

And, if you're a PotterHead like me, the series will never truly be "over."

Yes, I am a dork. Shut up. :D
