Jeep® brand adds 3 new models
Posted on Friday, January 8th, 2010 at 11:31 AM EST.

The Jeep® brand is broadening its vehicle lineup with the introduction of three new rugged, versatile and innovative vehicles that deliver classic Jeep design and capability.

The new 2010 Jeep Liberty Renegade boasts a new premium, rugged appearance with standard class-leading capability features, while the Jeep Wrangler lineup is expanded with unique limited-edition models—Jeep Wrangler Islander and Jeep Wrangler Mountain—that deliver high-impact visual appeal with outdoor fun-and-freedom themes.

“While clearly appealing to our core customers, these three new Jeep models will attract new customers to the Jeep dealer showroom,” Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, said. “The new Liberty Renegade delivers renowned Jeep capability and an array of standard features in a stunning new rugged, premium design, while both Wrangler models expand the iconic anchor of the Jeep brand with unique, limited-edition versions that consumers have told us they want.”

The new Jeep Liberty Renegade and Jeep Wrangler Islander edition will be available in Jeep showrooms in the first quarter of 2010. The Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition will follow in the second quarter.

Jeep Liberty Renegade

The “Renegade” name returns to the Jeep® lineup for 2010. First used in 1964 on the inside door opening of the Jeep Wagoneer, the Renegade has always represented the rebellious heart and soul of the Jeep brand.

Positioned between Liberty’s Sport and Limited models, the new Jeep Liberty Renegade expands the Jeep Liberty lineup, delivering renowned capability—highlighted by Jeep’s Selec-Trac® II full-time, shift-on-the-fly, active four-wheel-drive system—in a unique, premium and rugged new design.

Jeep Liberty Renegade is offered in a new, Renegade-exclusive Salsa Red Pearl Coat exterior, as well as Natural Green Pearl Coat, Deep Water Blue Pearl Coat, Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and Stone White Clear Coat.

Standard Liberty Renegade exterior features include painted Mineral Gray Keystone 16-inch wheels that wear new, rugged all-terrain P235/70R16 outline white letter (OWL); dark neutral metallic wheel flares, lower side sills, front and rear fascia, body side moldings and rear license plate bar; black headlamp bezel; Argent Silver accent on the lower fascia appliqué and roof rack; Satin Black vinyl hood graphics; deep-tint glass; fog lamps; skid plates and tow hooks.

Inside, standard appointments include new premium cloth seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, instrument panel grab handle and park-brake boot; new driftwood accent bezels; leather-wrapped center console and soft-door armrests; premium Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC); cruise control; security alarm; rear cargo cover and steering-wheel-mounted radio controls.

Jeep Liberty Renegade’s standard Selec-Trac II active four-wheel-drive system offers customers the benefit of a fully electronic two-speed active transfer case and Brake-traction Control System (BTCS). It instantly anticipates wheel slip and redirects torque accordingly, which is ideal for off-roading or when driving in inclement weather.

This premium system offers a “4WD Auto” mode that is ideal for full-time driving. When in 4WD Auto mode, the system uses vehicle sensors to adjust and redirect torque between front and rear axles based on real-time driving conditions, providing the vehicle with more responsive traction.

For added capability when traversing steep grades, rough terrain or extremely poor traction surfaces, the transfer case includes a “4WD Low” mode. This second-speed gear multiplies engine torque 2.72 times and locks the clutch pack for maximum traction.

Electric shifting between two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive auto and four-wheel drive low is accomplished with a console-mounted switch. A push-pin button is used to shift to neutral mode.

A 3.7-liter V-6 engine is standard on all Jeep Liberty models, including the new Renegade. The 3.7-liter engine produces 210 horsepower (157 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

All Jeep Liberty models offer customers an “only-in-a-Jeep” open-air experience, courtesy of Jeep’s industry-exclusive Sky Slider™ full-length open-canvas roof.

Jeep Wrangler Islander

After more than 20 years, the unique Islander theme returns to Jeep.

The limited-edition Jeep Wrangler Islander is available on Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 models. Based on the Wrangler Sport model, the Islander’s unique beach theme conveys open-air fun at first and every glance.

Jeep Wrangler Islander is featured in unique Surf Blue Pearl Coat and also is available in Stone White Clear Coat, Bright Sliver Metallic Clear Coat and Brilliant Black Crystal Clear Coat.

Other exterior features include an Islander “Tiki Bob” decal on the hood with latitude and longitude coordinates that represent an actual location relating to the “Islander” theme of the vehicle, black side steps and popular Moab 17-inch wheels shod with 32-inch tires.

Inside, Islander’s seats are Dark Gray with Surf Blue inserts, blue stitching and an embroidered Islander “Tiki Bob” logo adorning the seat back. Blue stitching also has been added to the leather-wrapped steering wheel with Mopar® rubber floor mats completing the beach theme.

The Jeep Wrangler Islander option package is available at a U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,120.

Jeep Wrangler Mountain

Further expanding the iconic Wrangler brand’s reach, Jeep delivers another high-impact, limited-edition model with the Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition.

The Jeep Wrangler Mountain edition is based on the Wrangler Sport S package and is available on Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited 4×4 models.

Exterior features include a unique “Mountain” decal on the hood with latitude and longitude coordinates that represent an actual location relating to the “Mountain” theme of the vehicle; painted high-gloss Mineral Gray 17-inch Moab wheels, grille and bumper appliques; tubular side steps; 32-inch tires; black tail lamp guards; and a fuel-filler door from Mopar.

Available exterior colors include Rescue Green Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and Deep Water Blue Pearl Coat.

Interior features include an embossed seat insert with embroidered “Mountain logo,” and anodized graphite heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) rings.

The Jeep Wrangler Mountain option package will be available at a U.S. MSRP of $1,820.

I looked at Liberties before the Patriot, but that 6 getting 15-16 MPG was not for me. Heck, some V8's get better mileage, and more power. I just don't understand??

Chrysler Group LLC is revamping its powertrain lineup with technology that will contribute to an overall fuel-efficiency improvement of more than 25 percent during the 2010-2014 period, according to the automaker.

By 2014, more than 80 percent of Chrysler Group's current powertrain lineup will undergo a complete makeover, said Paolo Ferrero, senior vice president, Chrysler Powertrain. Fiat Powertrain technologies, such as Multiair, direct injection, turbocharging and transmission systems will be added to the powertrain portfolio.

Changes/updates include:

FIRE. Fiat Powertrain's 1.4L, in-line four-cylinder Fully Integrated Robotized Engine (FIRE) featuring Multiair. Two variations of the engine will be available, naturally aspirated and turbo.

WGE. The new 2.4L, in-line four-cylinder World Gas Engine (WGE) with Multiair features Fiat's Multiair technology to improve fuel economy and specific-power output.

Pentastar. Chrysler Powertrain will streamline its V-6 gas engine offerings from six options to the new fuel-efficient, 3.6-LV-6 Pentastar engine, launching on the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, due out in the second quarter this year. The all-new Pentastar V-6 delivers a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 8 percent on average when compared with previous Chrysler Group V-6 engines and delivers 90 percent of its available torque from 1,800-6,400 rpm. In the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 3.6L Pentastar V-6 engine offers an increase of 33 percent in horsepower and an 11 percent improvement in torque over its predecessor. The Pentastar V-6 is designed to use technologies such as Multiair, direct-injection, and turbocharging for future applications.

DDCT. Beginning with mid-size D-segment cars in 2010, Chrysler Powertrain will migrate Fiat's six-speed Dual Dry Clutch Transmission (DDCT) to Chrysler Group vehicles. The DDCT delivers a 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency while enhancing performance. It transitions seamlessly from economy to sport mode when desired and can handle up to 260 ft.-lb. of torque. The DDCT uses the best characteristics from both a manual transmission and an automatic transmission, delivering the efficient performance of a locked gear mechanical path, while maintaining the drivability and comfort of an automatic transmission, according to the automaker.

These vehicles sound attractive and I think will be well received by a lot of buyers. Unfortunately not so much by me. I would like the availability of a Liberty 6 speed manual, A Diesel (thanks Tip), and a solid front axle. Lose some of the power accessories and drop the price. Too bad for me and a very few others that this is unlikely to ever happen. Oh well, these new trim levels seem like they should sell well and give the brand a little sizzle in the short term before the truly new stuff comes out. Overall, a good move. I'm out of the new vehicle market for a while now anyway.:)

Hmmm not sure about developing a 3.6 litre engine for 2012---Taxes needed to pay for the reccession ---Gas will probably be about $12.00 per gallon--So no matter how economical these engines are, they are heading the way of the Dinosaur....

My wife, who is not light footed, is getting between 18 and 18.5 MPG on her 09 Jeep Liberty. I could easily squeeze an extra 1/2 MPG out if I drove her Liberty.

I like the idea of the Liberty Renegade. However over in the UK, the price of a year's road tax, the cost and the poor mpg of the current diesel engine they use make it a bit prohibitive.

Now, if they were to do a Patriot Renegade, I reckon that would really take off over here.

The Liberty Renegade isnt really anything new. They just had one a few years ago. When they swithced the body style it went away and now its back. It even came in that weird cactus green with green wheels:)

They should have kept the rocky mountain edition for the patriot, it is truly a good package.

I have the special "Poor guy bought a Jeep" edition. Comes complete with crank windows, manual locks, 5spd, FWD, deluxe 16 inch steel wheels, no MP3 playability, intermittent trans whine, flappin hood, no floormats, grindy feeling 3rd gear, broken plastic seat trim thats been on order for over a month, and limited edition vinyl seat coverings:) But shes my baby and I love her:) Knock on wood, but at least the water stays outside and doesnt come in giving me the "mini domelight aquariums" feature.

Did I understand correctly that all these new "models" consist of, basically, a decal and a different paint color? Whatever happened to having actual differences between Jeep models? The KJ Renegade was a pretty cool thing, but sounds like the KK Renegade adds little functionality over the basic package. (Okay, if other KK's don't come with tow hooks and skid plates, there's that - but come on! It's a Jeep for crying out loud! The KJ Renegade had at least those cool roof lights and flares.)

Me too! Except mine has the CVT upgrade in case one of us ever breaks a leg. I've gotta wonder -- Jeeps with leather seats, air conditioning and power everything. Next we'll have power sunvisors! :icon_rolleyes:

I've got you both beat. My 64 CJ5 had no doors or top from the factory, no heater/defroster, ONE wiper-vacuum powered, manual locking hubs, manual choke-brakes-steering, 3 speed mated to a 72hp engine whose design began in the 1920's. I do have the luxury of a Warn OD giving me a 4th shift lever and 12 forward speeds and 4 in reverse. And yes, this Jeep is a whole lot of fun to drive.:smiley_thumbs_up:

Mine is all base sport as well, I did spend the money on the trail rated package though, but that's important for me. I don't like power windows and door locks anyway, and 99% of the time I'm the only one in it anyway.

There's a few upgrades I'd like, but not the whole package. I can only afford so much anyway, so I got what was important to me.

I got the trailer park meets hgih class hooker version. It is the 2.0 and cvt FWD however, i got the E package of power windows plug fold flat front seat, tinted glass, door locks sentry key and some fancy dancy sport roof rack cross bars to dress it all up!

So what's it like to clutch in reverse? ;) My wife thinks I back up too fast already -- we have a long driveway.

Nothing moves fast with 5:38 gears:). It's handy to start up on the trail without clutching, but that can usually be done with any manual transmission and low range TC option.

Realistically, they are total and complete dumb****s for not selling the wrangler with a diesel, they should be bending over backwards to make it happen.

This seems to be a very interesting thing to read upon, regarding the release of the 3 new models from jeep. I was curious on the jeep liberty though. I hope that some good jeep liberty parts (http://www.car-stuff.com/jeeplibertyparts.htm) can compensate it in order to really make things work out for this one. Hope all is well.

I am sure Jeep and other manufacturers would love to sell more diesel engine vehicles. However, due to the environmentalists wannabees of the world, it is harder and harder to meet the environmental standards set by the federal government.
