: Broken 4X2 after 12 hours
bmcbbg 10-17-2007, 08:31 PM I bought my patriot 4x2 last night and this morning I went to drive it and bot right speakers do not work and I think my gas gauge is broke. Mine had 27 Miles on it when the dealer delivered it with a full tank of gas. After I drove to work and back(Aprox 91 miles round trip) I had a millimeter over half a tank. Now I figure that means I am getting about 11 Mpg and that was all highway miles. Feels real slugish. I took it to the dealer and they are going to look at it. I really like this car but the old well it has a lifetime warranty does not make me feel better my first 90 miles.
JoeBecker 10-17-2007, 08:47 PM Sorry to hear that...
Maybe instead of setting production records the last two months the Belvidere Assembly should have been working on quality records????
I hope that with the 2 week idle and excess inventory they will take it a little easier and make sure that from now on the vehicles coming off the line are quality.
What was that Michael Keaton movie that a Japense company took over the car company (found it, it was GUNG HO, 1986)? The American workers came in during the strike, busted their butts to make quota, but the last 5 vehicles were crap. Most did not have engines, one was missing a windshield (which Keaton pretended to clean), and the one he started to drive off in after giving his big speech fell completely apart.
In short you problems could be worse? :icon_rolleyes:
The scene in the movie:
Hunt Stevenson (Michael Keaton): If you walk out that door, you're going to miss a great comeback. We're ready to roll here, Jack.
Mr. Sakamoto: This will never be like a Japanese factory... *Jack.*
Hunt Stevenson: Oh, yeah? You're right. You know what else? So what?
Mr. Sakamoto: You failed.
Hunt Stevenson: Really? Wanna know something? I got one of the first cars ever made here. I got *the* first car ever - I don't think I want it anymore. As a matter of fact, here
[hands keys to Mr. Sakamoto]
Hunt Stevenson: . Why don't you take the keys, ok? I'd rather have one of those cars
[points to cars in assembly line]
Hunt Stevenson: . I'd rather have one of these cars that *we* made *together,* by hand. Your guys and my guys, together. You know why? Because those cars stand for something. Those cars stand for something pretty great. I'm proud of those cars. I'm taking one.
[Turns to workers]
Hunt Stevenson: Gentlemen, I'm going home in my new car!
Hunt Stevenson: [All workers cheer and applaud, then silently pray that Hunt's new car has a working engine. Hunt starts the car, and the workers cheer. However, the car literally falls apart after about 2 yards, and the workers start to moan. Hunter gets out of the car] I tell ya, I thought it handled great!
nearly.normal.jimmy 10-17-2007, 08:53 PM What was that Michael Keaton movie that a Japense company took over the car company?
"THOSE ARE RIBBONS OF SHAME!!!!"
"Well then you really oughta wear them on the inside!"

Sorry about your problems.
If it is any consolation, the gas gauge is a little wacky acting. Moves slowly, quickly.... so that may not be bad...
We hope...
Jim
SMJPG2008 10-17-2007, 09:48 PM I hate the gas gauge in the Patriot.
bmcbbg 10-17-2007, 10:15 PM What kind of mileage should I be getting. I got my free tank last night drove to work this morning and back(92 miles) Half a tank left. Thats like 11-12 mpg Highway, that cant be right can it? The speakers going out on the first day sucked too as it was my day for the carpool. I am rocking out and someone on the right says my speakers dont work. Tryed balance and fade. No dice. Really embarassing first day owned....
tazman900 10-17-2007, 10:22 PM There's a thread that talks about MPG..I believe the 4x2 folks are getting about 27-30 mpg.
You also mentioned about it running sluggish and that was also in another thread that if the dealer "flash" the computer seemed to help other folks
Rich
nearly.normal.jimmy 10-17-2007, 10:25 PM You see what I get below. Far from the listed specs.
Hyper milers are hitting 28 average with the meaty part of the curve being 23-26.
bmcbbg 10-17-2007, 10:33 PM Thanks for your responses, hopefully everything is worked out. I have big plans for my ride. I just hope my ride does not have plans for me.

quasimodem51 10-18-2007, 07:50 AM bmcbbg: Check out the threads about gas mileage and MPG. When I first got my Patriot, I was dismayed by the gas mileage. The service guy asked me to be patient and let the computer *understand* my driving habits. After 6000 kilometres (4000 miles), the Patriot is starting to settle down with respect to gas mileage. Mine is 21 mpg. That is within the rated spec for a Trail Rated Limited with the CVT2L tranny.
No doubt about it the gas gauge is anything but linear in reporting gas level. There are moments when it hardly moves and then others when it appears the car is guzzling gas.
gymbeau 10-19-2007, 06:19 AM My gas tank is 'smaller' from full to half, and 'larger' from
half to empty. So if your guessimating, and get 11 on the
'top' half, you might get close to 40 on the bottom half.
Even if you check your mileage based on miles driven and gallons
purchased, it might not be accurate. You can't put exactly the
same amount in every time. Several tanks will give you more of a
real world average.
quasimodem51 10-19-2007, 09:55 AM I agree gymbeau. You need a larger sample (several tanks over time) to get a realistic mesaurement.
bmcbbg 10-19-2007, 11:08 PM Well I took it to Empty today to get the best possible guestimate. I got 260 miles on 1 tank of gas. So 260 divided by 14= 18.5 MPG, so I guess it kind of got a little better. All were highway miles. When I picked up the car yesterday the Dealer service department told me Jeep would probably come out with a updated flash for the computer as this was a common problem. He said after 4000 miles I "should" get better mileage. 18.5 to me is not that good as I was driving a Toyota 4Runner with a V8 before this and averaged 21 MPG. As for the speakers not working, that was all my fault as I only tested it out with my IPOD Connected to the AUX port. My wire was new but faulty, so I went out and bought a Monster AUX cable. That Stereo Sings now. I am very happy with my Patriot overall. My buddies ride in it and like it for the room and the smoothness of the ride. I just hope I can average about 24-25 MPG one day.
hunter44102 10-20-2007, 06:38 AM Bcm - You are doing too much guessing here. The Patriot does not hold 14 gallons, and if you take it to the empty mark, you have only used about 12 gallons. There is a 1.5 gallon reserve. (13.5 gallons capacity total)
Here is how to know exactly what mileage you are getting:
1) Go to the gas station and fill up until the pump stops.
2) Reset your dash trip counter to 0 miles
3) Drive until you are at 1/4 tank or less
4) Go to gas station and write down the trip mileage
5) Fill up the tank until it stops. Write down the amount of gallons you filled.
Divide your trip mileage by gallons filled and you will have the most accurate reading.
If you want to be even more accurate, use the same gas station AND pump to make sure the pump stops at the same level as the first fillup.
JoeBecker 10-20-2007, 08:29 AM And be sure to do this for about a month before making a judgement.
If you try to calculate your mileage on the first tank alone, or even the second you will find the numbers to vary greatly. You need to fill up and record mileage off many tanks before trying to accurately calculate consumption.
On just one tank, approx 13.5 gallons, 1 gallon is 7% of the total. That is too much possible error. If you determine your mileage over 10 tanks, about 135 gallons, 1 gallon is less than 1% of the total. This is a lot more safe in determining actual mileage. Not only is it a more accurate gas consumption but it also will allow for the full driving experience and a true average mileage.
If you want to know right now, get a scangauge so that you can see your instanteous. Again this will not be completely accurate at first, but it will let you see the ballpark.
mitakuuluu 10-21-2007, 10:04 PM I calculate based on miles / gas used to fill. If you check my sig, you'll see that there's some significant variation from tank to tank due to different driving conditions, fill levels, etc.
suzq044 12-04-2007, 09:24 AM I was just saying to my bf yesterday, that this gauge doesn't seem quite right. There's no way our mileage is that bad...
we got 260 out of the car on our first "tank" -- light came on, we filled it to 3/4.. and by the time i got home, we were down to half a tank already. I think the measurement system is weird, or something.. not to mention the supposed 2gal still in the tank when the lights go on, which is about 20 miles worth.. [supposedly]
don't forget the quality of the gas you put in the car also will effect milage. In the book it says you should actually avoid using high-octane fuels. In california, we have a problem with 'watered down' gas -- so i dunno yet. We'll have to do some more "testing" with it.

Been looking through many-a-thread in regards to this and even started my own... Seems like the Pat's gas gauge is just finicky. Or crappy. Apparently, this wouldn't be the first Jeep with this issue, nor would it be the first car with this issue. Just today a buddy of mine with a brand new Scion (read: Toyota, a harbinger of reliability) told me how funky his gauge was.
The vibe I'm getting: Use your odometer for precise measurements. The gauge is just a "basic idea" of where your fuel is at...
suzq044 12-10-2007, 01:14 PM yeah, you figure with all the modern technology, we'd have a more accurate reading rather than a less accurate.
RHill 01-03-2008, 01:51 AM For some reason, my experience with two Ford Explorers and a Mercury Gran Marquis is that when their fuel gage says 3/4 or 1/2 or 1/4, and I fill it, I put in the expected amount of fuel. On other cars or trucks, the gage is not linear. On my current car, for the last 95,000 miles since I bought it used with 100,000 miles, it has been consistent. When it shows 3/4 on the gauge it is really 1/2 in the tank, and when it shows 1/2 on the gauge it is about 3/10 in the tank.
When I get my Patriot, I'm going to fill it after I leave the dealer, and then fill it again when it is indicating 3/4 and see how much it really takes. And then fill it when it is indicating 1/2 and see how much it takes. And then the same thing when it is indicating 1/4.
It would be nice to have a gauge that has an indicator with markings that match the fuel level in the tank, but I am accustomed to compensating.
Oh well, beats walking. :)
Jayboid 06-13-2008, 04:05 PM New to this site, but took our 2.4 Slap Stick on a three fill up 4 night trip touring at 2600 miles. We did a great deal of slowing and small town visit miles and got nearly 27.6 MPG.
minnpacker 09-07-2008, 10:33 PM I don't understand why you had so much problem, the last tank I had 360.3 on the trip odometer and filled up all I got in was 11.222 gallons which figured out to be 32 MPG now I don't always get that and the computer is a little different than my figures but I get 28 to 30 regularly and have gotten 31.2 on the computer but it is getting cooler here and I know it will go down but I have consistently gotten 300 plus on every tank and have only had the ringer go off twice. Hope your milage has improved but I own 2 my wife drives one and I drive the other and we have gotten 28 to 30 regularly.:pepper:
NickelPlate 09-08-2008, 07:12 AM That doesn't seem right on your mileage. I test drove a 2009 Limited 4x4 recently (with zero miles on it :)) and was able to get 23.5 in town during a short 15 minute test drive at least according to the EVIC. Granted that's not exactly a significant test sample but I was pretty pleased with that number.
I'd definitely have it checked out.
snokat 09-08-2008, 12:46 PM 4x2, 2.4L CVT2 with air on around town>>20.79 MPG for the past 18-months.
"Around town" where I live is some I-95, some 0-55 mph traffic light areas. We are always going from 0-55 for a half-mile to a mile or two, and then back to 0. Our best so far was a 27.3 MPG HWY with the air off last winter.
In short, even "around town" or "city" driving is a relative term/comparison.
It's a given that the CVT2 will yeild the lowest MPG of all the tranies whether it be 4x2 or 4x4. I have learned that using the a/c switch(off) when pulling out/away gives the CVT a nicer take-off accelleration while maintaining a reasonably low RPM, thus eeking out the MPGs.
The AutoStick would be the more desirable tranny in my experience. Though the non-AutoStick comes with the downhill gear which gives nice mud traction.
The A/C really can cause the CVT2 to really rev when pulling out.
GAS GAUGE: Ours is small at the top and big at the bottom, but I haven't had a chance to figure out how far off.
My Xscape holds 16.5-gals. and at "half" it has only burned 6 gals., yep, 10.5 gals. left.
