: What do you carry in the bush?
Boreal Bob 01-02-2010, 01:55 AM Hi Folks,
I spend lots of hours on logging roads, many kliks (over 40kms) from pavement. I carry for survival: a map and compass, GPS, a shovel, an axe, saws, ropes, extra food, champagne and stainless steel glasses (for my wife and I to enjoy by lovely lakes), a camera, a blanket or two, a come-along, a canoe, and always a shotgun or rifle and signalling flares.
Cheers, Boreal Bob

Is that a typo, 40kms from pavement??
ti-claude31 01-02-2010, 12:35 PM beer what else! lol
Boreal Bob 01-04-2010, 12:44 AM Hey Mud,
Either you live south of the "Medicine Line" and are not used to distances in kms or "kilometres" or, poor fellow you, live very far indeed from the bush. Where I like to hunt and canoe, west of Algonquin Park, it is easy to find very long logging roads that will take you rather far into the bush. That is why I take along extra gear. You never know when a tree will block your route out or the river will rise and the ford (where you cross rivers without bridges) will be too deep. Spending a night in the bush is more comfortable when you are prepared.

Sorry mate, you got me wrong
In Australia 40kms isn't that far at all.
1. a couple of jerry cans full of petrol, too make sure I get home.
2. the same qty of water.
3. another vehicle
4. recovery gear
dixiedawg 01-04-2010, 08:26 AM I used to canoe and fish Algonquin, wonderful area.
I think someone should do a poll on this, like the one for "what Mods have you done", to see what folks carry. That might be cool.
I carry, extra clothes, water, boots, leather gloves, shovel, tire chains (everyday in winter driving too), and when going off road a comealong and/or winch, tree strap, recovery strap, farm jack if I remember, and always good to go in at least pairs.
UA_who 01-04-2010, 11:57 AM Out here in the desert, the list must include:
Water
Tire patch kit
Compressor
Water
Sun block
Recovery gear (Hi-lift and tow strap work well)
Water
I've never been stuck in a place that I couldn't get out the same day. But getting stuck or having the vehicle break down out in the desert in the summer is a recipe for disaster.
dixiedawg 01-04-2010, 12:27 PM Tire patch kit and compressor, thanks for reminding me. I also carry those, just forgot about it. The compressor I carry is a small one that plugs into the cig lighter. It's slow if completely flat, but it will work.
Probably have used the shovel more than anything else, digging the vehicle out, sometimes I need to shovel away the wall of snow the plow leaves too, just to get into the drive.
UA_who 01-04-2010, 12:39 PM ... sometimes I need to shovel away the wall of snow the plow leaves too, just to get into the drive...
Hehe, I know what you mean. OK. No, I don't know. But I think I saw someone clearing snow from their driveway once on TV :)
Seriously though, the shovel is a necessity here too. But not for snow. I have dug myself out of sand, gravel, mud etc. a few times.
geojeep 02-01-2011, 03:09 PM I always take some form of Lysol Wipes. After a meal I clean the cooking utensils with the wipes and then a quick rinse with water and your dishes are sanitized. The advantages I have found are no wash basin wasting large amounts of water, no liquid dish soap or bleach which could leak.
kpool 02-01-2011, 04:54 PM Well I've only had my Patriot a couple weeks, but on trail rides in my TJ I always have my winch, tree saver, tow strap, fire ext., first aid kit, tools, oil, transmission and streering fluid, and some extra parts like u-joints. Have even brought extra coil springs before.
MechE 02-01-2011, 06:42 PM In my pat at all times is a rope, tow strap, flashlight, spotlight, first aid kit, tool kit, blanket, extra pair of socks, bungee cords, and sometimes extra windshield wash. In the winter I always have a shovel, coveralls and boots. Then there's a whole 'nother list of stuff I have when I bring my hunting pack with, too much to remember and type out. And of course, my buddy Mr. Springfield likes to ride along as well....
Earthworm51 02-01-2011, 08:45 PM What about the A$$ Wipe, it has to fit in there somewhere.

Jeep gave me that, came in a nice green canvas cover, lol. I always have a roll of paper towels in the back, plus tissues in the glove box.

When I carry nothing with me I carry a flashlight above my rear cargo area... don't we all have it stock? :)
dixiedawg 02-02-2011, 09:07 AM Flashlight was not included in my Patriot. But I do have several in there, and carry 3 in my bag.
MechE 02-02-2011, 06:23 PM When I carry nothing with me I carry a flashlight above my rear cargo area... don't we all have it stock? :)
Yeah I guess if you want to count every flashlight I have the one in the ceiling, one on a multitool in the center console, one in the rear compartment, the spotlight inside the spare tire, and if I have the hunting pack I'll have another 1 or 2 flashlights in there. So a total of about 5 or 6 flashlights haha
dixiedawg 02-03-2011, 07:01 AM Sounds like me MECH, and in winter I also have my led light that goes on my head. I have that mostly for climbing tree stands, but it comes in handy when putting chains on in the dark, keeps both hands free and the light right where you need it.
MechE 02-03-2011, 06:11 PM I need to get me one of those headlamps, broke my old one a while ago. I have a strange obsession with illumination and flashlights. The KC lights that I put on my durango (which are now on the pat) were like the most fun modification I made to that vehicle haha I also want more lights on the pat.... :)
dixiedawg 02-04-2011, 07:22 AM Check out the Light Wing for adding lights, a few people here have those and I think they look good.
My headlight I got from LLBean, works well, has high and low settings, etc, and the light tilts too. I also have a headband that works with the mini-maglights too, just slip one in and turn it on.
I got tired of sticking my maglight solitare in my mouth to climb, especially when I tasted deer scent on it. YUCK! lol
MechE 02-04-2011, 09:33 PM especially when I tasted deer scent on it. YUCK! lol
haha That's a dedicated hunter right there. Ingesting the scent so that your very pores ooze the smell of the game you pursue. :notworthy:
I guess other people may continue posting about what they carry in their vehicles as well... we can terminate this thread jacking at any time...
todde702 02-05-2011, 11:40 AM What do you carry in the bush?
I usually bring some lopping shears to trim that thing down. Of course, that's my only definition of wild bush...a bush that hasn't been hedged and has grown too big. :p
LOL...I know, us suburban/city folk are strange...
Violence of Action 02-05-2011, 10:18 PM I keep a couple of extra hats. Those of us that are follically impaired can never have enough.
rjerome 04-27-2011, 12:01 PM Winter time candles, waterproof matches, sleeping bag, food, water, wool clothing, hats mitts, water first aid kit
warmer weather, bug repellent, water, food, first aid kit appropriate clothing.
Map, compass, flashlight, and one of the most important things brains...need to know what my limitations are and lastly leaving an itinerary with someone...
