Any Pat drivers have one and if so where is yours mounted?

I have only a Cobra handheld. I run to a short magnetic mount that I sit on the roof behind the sunroof and before the first roof rail crossbar (I have the Limited).

It is not a great setup but I am not about to drill a hole in the roof or clamp a bumper whip. I just have it to monitor highway traffic when out of the city.

Be sure and get some 3M clear bra scraps from a local shop and put them on your vehicle under where you want the magnet mount to sit - it will help keep it from scratching up your ride. I just did this for my ham radio mounts and it appears to be a good idea.

As for mounting the radio - there isn't a good spot. I just spent about 2 hours sitting in our patriot trying to figure out where to mount the ham radio. Best option I can find is right on top of the dash above the radio.

I took all of the dash apart this weekend and looked at using that pocket below the radio. No go, my Ham unit is too big to fit. I'd also have to do lots of cutting that I didn't want to do. I'll just mount to the dash or maybe buy another radio with a remote head, which I could make fit that space better.

I got the Cobra 75 WX ST which has the transmitter, etc. in the handle, and a small junction box for connecting the handle and antenna to. The J-box is easily concealable and I put mine INSIDE the shifter shroud. I also picked up a Firestik antenna and flush mount. I mounted the antenna to the back bumper as you can see in this photo:

http://www.jeeppatriot.com/gallery/data/500/CB_Antenna.jpg

Only bad thing about the bumper is that it isn't vertical; has a slight angle. This only affects the antenna above 75 mph when it catches some wind and goes CRAZY. Problem solved by a shoestring tied around the rear gate shock to pull the antenna in a bit.

This is a shot of inside the shifter shroud...

I work for an AV integrator, so I had access to RG8, which is a VERY thick coax cable for the antenna. It was a pain in the butt to terminate and route the cable, I would recommend using the MFG supplied RG59. I completed this install by drilling a pass-through hole through the shifter shroud on the passenger side for connection of the mic handle.

Dawson,

Where did you pass the coax to the inside?

i mounted my cobra next to the shifter on the passenger side and put mic in the little holder in front of the passenger side...no antenna yet

Passenger side fender through firewall - rubber grommet used for rear window washer line... that's where I run my cables. Dropped them behind the glove box. (for ham radio)

Antenna mount: trunk lip mount on hood right next to factory am/fm antenna.

Gnihcraes,

What is the name/part number of the the trunk lip mount that you used? Can it be ordered online?

Here is what I use and where you can order it... or any similar product from ham radio or cb shop might have it. Works on about any trunk, door, hatch, lid.

Looks Great! I'm not one for drilling holes in my Jeep or putting a magnet mount on the roof. I'm looking at a 3' Firestix. I'll see if it can all work together. My problem is that all the CB shops no longer exist here. So I'd have to order to the US or Toronto. I'm the type of guy who likes to walk into a store, get good service and have a qualified opinion as to what I need to get the job done. The price is not that important as it's just another toy! I was trying to find a store in Upper New York State. I'm just an hours drive South to the border. Thanks for your help.

Dawson,
Also in regards to the Cobra 75 WX ST, does it have a jack for an external speaker and can it be plugged into the ipod jack on the radio. The reason I ask is that I have hearing aids and with the road noise it would be alot easier to hear.

Mine is a very tidy fit in the pocket. Needed to trim the pocket at the back and also grind a bit off the metal bracket that supports the radio.

it all worked out ok.

passed coax through the grommet with the washer line as above and used a lip mount also for the antannae.

just to point out cb in australia is uhf 471mhz, as opposed to hf 27mhz in the states, the antenna for ours is about a foot long;)(9db gain)

Concerning the space below the radio. How did you run your coax and power lines. How did you remove the black holder? And did you drill out holes to fit the wires?

FWIW, I understand that a vertical antenna propagates from the base of the antenna. So a rear bumper mount has the vehice in the way of propagation to the front. A hood mount or roof mount may be a lot less obstructed by the car's sheetmetal.

FWIW and YPMV (Your Propagation May Vary). :)

yeah we have both Cb(27Mhz) and UHF here in Aus, but mine is UHF, far more popular here now.
I have self esteem issues since selling the skyline and bought a 900mm 6.5 Db fibreglass antenna.

I was planning to drill holes in it, but had to cut a fair section out to fit the unit in.
The black pocket is attached to the facsia panel pretty well. It has the lugs melted and bent over.
I snapped them all off, cut the pocket as needed, put everything back together to test for fit etc, then glued it back on.

I'm thinking of installing the following amp. I have the 120 amp alternator in my Pat. Will I have problems? What is the best way to install it. Your thoughts. Or is there another amp I should be looking at?

RM Italy KL - 40 watt linear amplifier. It features:

On/Off/ Power switch

Operating mode - AM/FM/SSB

Requires 1-5 watts on AM/FM and 2-10 watts on SSB to drive this unit

Requires a 5 amp 12-14 volt power supply

Output power is 25-30 watts on AM/FM and 35-55 watts on SSB

Features 1 - 5A fuse

I'd be sure and run it from a dedicated wire straight to the battery though, I wouldn't try to run it from the lighter plug.

Here is my setup on the Patriot: Two feeds from the battery.

One is fused @ 20 amps with a blade fuse holder (couple dollars from auto supply store) into anderson powerpole which feeds in behind the glove box for Ham radio or CB or whatever. It terminates to another powerpole. (pictures one and two)

Two is is 8 gauge welding cable with 175 amp power pole straight to the battery for the jumper cables or higher amperage needs. Jumper cables just plug into this powerpole for jump starts - no need to remove the air duct to access the battery terminals for jump starts. :) (picture three)

Thanks for the pics! I have the 120 amp alternator. How many watts are you running with your amp? Did you run the power through the same back window washer location in the firewall as the coax? I've read that the power should not run beside the coax. (Love this forum.):pepper:

This is an excellent setup gnihcraes. I can speak for the anderson powerpole connectors and they are great for swapping gear in/out.

Wanted to put in my Icon V-8000 (2 meter vhf) but it won't fit in the dash pocket. So I'm probably going to mount it on top of the dash where the NAV system would be in a vehicle so equipment. (mine doesn't have NAV). I'm just not keen on the radio being seen/visible for theft reasons. But I will make some holes on top of the dash (before the wife catches me)

Was wishing for extra money here at Christmas to purchase a remote head dual band of some sorts, but no cash came my way. Which is ok. I'll make do with my v8000. I don't normally use it in the family vehicle anyway, too much noise and conversations happening. I just don't like having a vehicle without radio capabilities. Especially on a longer trip to visit inlaws and such.
