: Installing Fog Lights

Hello all...

I plan on installing a set of fog lights into the recesses on the bumper. When I purchased my Patriot, it was more a choice of color and not options. Unfortunately, for me, My Patriot did not have them installed. Instead of spending an arm and a leg on the MOPAR brand, I want to install a set of, somewhat less expensive, shelf brand lights.

What I need to know is the diameter that I can stuff into these holes, is there a mounting point behind the plastic inserts, etc. I don't want to cut or drill holes into the painted surface of the holes, if I don't need to.

Once I get started, I will document the steps to do this with pictures and posts.

Has anyone already attempted and completed this project?

Thanks,

Wade

Thank you in advance... hubz and I are going to do the same thing! (But we'll probably go with Mopar... or, if I remember correctly, they can also come in Hella?) :D

i have taken my hella 500s to my local speed shop and they said they wouldnt mount them becuase i would crease the bumper. something about the plastic exterior being so far away from the actual metal bumper. so they sit in the back seat until i find a way to mount them, let me know how it goes

Che,

Did you want to mount the Hella 500s on top of your bumper? Reason I ask, is at 6" round, they won't fit in the holes that I want to use. I'm thinking about a set of Hella Optilux 2500 lamps... They should fit nicely... But then again.... So many choices, so much time...

Update on my Fog Lights project...

I stopped by the dealership today to ask about having them do the install if I went with the Mopar solution. Here's what I found out (dollar amounts are approimate):

Fog Light kit, includes lamps, harness and switch - $195
Installation time of 2.5 hours - $450
Program computer to recognize addition - $85

$730 is a bit too rich or me. Guess they need to charge that much to pay Jolene! :)

When I got home, I took a few minutes and had a look at what is behind those little black plastic disks where I want to install the lights. DCX molded a four holed flange in the back for the lights to mount to! This is not going to be that hard to do. I just need to find the lights I will be happy with, something that will have a Xenon bulbs, and that will have a bracket that will swing back and mount flush with the flange.

I also learned today, Hella sells a remote control kit that allows you to turn the fog lights on and off with having to mount a switch on the dash! cost for the remote is about $30. The diameter of the opening looks like it will support a 4" diameter lamp. I have found Hella makes an Optilux 2500 fog light kit that should fit nicely. My only problem with it is that it uses a halogen bulb, but I can get a Xenon replacement later.

BTW, I just installed a set of H13 Xenon headlight bulbs on my Patriot and they are a great addition. Really lights up the road without blinding on coming traffic!

When I get the lights, I'll update you again....

$180 bucks an hour???????? :wow:
They have got to be out of their minds!!! :icon_rolleyes:

You could have a lawyer install it for less than that hourly rate!!!

What I get from that is that the dealer does not want to be bothered with aftermarket /separate work and prices it accordingly.

Not my ex-lawyer, he wouldn't even let one of his legal assistants show you door out of his office for that piddling rate! That said jimmy, your point is well made.

wow. :o

That much for fog lights is waaay too much.

Now that I'm getting closer to ordering my Pat (a month to go!) I did some serious number crunching, and here's what I came up with...all prices do not include our discount of 1% below invoice.

Sport loaded like I want = $22645
add Mopar UConnect + $299 (before labor)
add Mopar Fog Lamps + $195 (before labor)
add Premium Mats + $70
Total-------$23,209 (without install labor)

Limited loaded like I want = $24,090
includes fog lamps
includes UConnect (integrated into the mirror)
includes Premium Mats
added bonus of Leather Seats
added bonus of DRLs
added bonus of Lumbar Support
added bonus of Audio Controls on Steering Wheel

The difference between the two? $881

Yup...finding out how much they want to charge you just to take care of your fog lamps makes me even more sure that I should just go with the Limited. For less than $900 more, how can I not?

Sounds awesome.
I was trying to do that today and the dealer got upset when I didn't order it which I told him before hand I couldn't, just wanted some numbers.

Hey wade, I'm interested in fitting some fog lights too on my patriot and as you have detailed the dealer is just too expensive.
If you go with another type of fog light how are you going to get around the reprogramme of the computer to recognize the new lights???

Perhaps this is something worth looking into. I am planning on getting the Jeep fog lights, however I knew nothing about a 'computer'.

Are they not simply wired to the existing fuse box or am I missing something.

only thing i can think of
Fog lights on the Pat shut off when you turn on your high beams,
that may be the feature that requires reprogramming
aftermarket lights even the mopar lights will probably work without the reprogramming, will jsut stay on

H Wade,

Just wondering if you needed/added heavy-duty wiring for those H13/9008 headlight bulbs, and which bulb (company) did you get? 60/55W or more?

I'm all for great lighting too.

I wanted the foglamps on my 2010 Patriot when I ordered it however I believe I was given some excuse that it wasn't available for the North Edition package and that I'd have to change the entire package. Plus they wanted $195 for the option.

So now that I have my Patriot (without foglamps) I'm considering the same idea you are. If you buy & install aftermarket foglamps you likely won't be able to aim them properly or they'll look odd, like this;

Myself I've priced the foglamp housings themselves; $57 each. I'm considering buying & installing new foglamp housings and fabricating my own wiring harness. They'll be no complicated steering wheel multiswitch installation or computer programing.

If I ever get around to it I'll post my pics.

I've been looking into installing the original fog lights too, got a price of $297 for the kit and $100 for installation. I can order the kit for $193 USD, and my dealer will do the install for the same $100 so I'll probably go that route.
