: How to spend the Christmas bonus

My patriot has been completely stock for two years now, not counting a Mopar air filter. I'll be getting a good $1500 after some bills are paid with my bonus. A K&N intake system is the only definite purchase. After that who knows? Fighting for my attention is a Magnaflow exhaust, RRO lift (which would require new tires $$$), and if I get the lift, I'd have to at least consider some new wheels. Any thoughts on what might be a good way to spend this free money? My girlfriend just brought to my attention my desire for WeatherTech digital fit floor mats, so there goes another couple hundred bucks.

Seriously, if you don't have a six-month income buffer, you should stash that money away. Never know when you're gonna lose your job, and it just makes good financial sense. Hate to be a bummer, but after unexpectedly losing my "secure" job two weeks ago and having almost nothing in savings, it's been an eye opener. Luckily I walked into another job pretty quick. But there will be no frills for this household until we have a substantial buffer. Roof over my head is WAY more important than a lift or tires for the vehicle that already gets me from points A to B quite well.

Just some food for thought. Getting a bonus in this economy is certainly something to be thankful for - just think of all those who don't even get a paycheck through no fault of their own!

Speaking as a current fed, this bonus is pretty new to us. It's the second straight year.

I'm glad you were able to bounce back, I totally understand the state we are all in.

You should spend it all on Sirius/XM stock, you could buy half their company with $1500.......

I agree with Dawson, invest it. Buy into an Index Fund or some other investment. Not sure about taxes in Canada, but if in the US I might suggest a state bond fund, in the state where you live, to save federal and state taxes.

You could buy gold coins, although they are as high now as I've ever seen.

No bonuses for us this year either, although we stopped the Christmas bonuses years ago, I used to still get bonuses as part of my salary. The past year has been so bad though, that there have been none. And that's a big part of my annual income. Always nice to make less as prices increase, woo hoo!

Guess I should be happy to have a job.

I'm gonna sound like a bit of a scrooge here (but I don't care)......but as a fellow Canadian, I have a hard time with a civil servant get a bonus with tax payers money. IMHO!

It used to be that jobs in the public sector paid less than the private sector, but they had great benefits. Now the pay is high as well. In the US the average wage for the public sector is now around $70K per year. Well more than the median income. And the goverments are all going broke trying to keep up with the wages and benefits, especially the great retirements they pay.

I didn't hear of anyone in the goverment being layed off during this economy either???
