I don't have a link. But a google would prob. find one.

I am just tlaking off my head about something I heard about on the radio.

Some, or one, or several auto insurance companies are experimenting with the idea of tracking your driving habits via GPS and altering your insurance rates acording to how safely you drive.

This would include speeding, rabbit starts, sudden braking, high speed cornering etc.

All based on yuor gps postion cross referenced with maps and a black box installed in your car that monitors everything including g forces.

You would receive a letter each month citing how you drove and what it could/would do to your insurance rates.

This was all in the experimental phase when they wehre discussing it on the radio a ffew months back, and the insurance cos. were looking for volunteers to test the plan.

so... that's that. Just something I remembered after reading about rates in another thread.

Hmmmm... Obviously this would theoretically benefit those who live in the IDEAL world, but it won't stop reckless driving habits. I mean, only a few would realistically want this system in their vehicle since you may feel your driving is indeed safe (depending on the circumstances at hand), but you may be charged MORE than currently because someone thinks you should NEVER have to accelerate rapidly, or change lanes quickly, etc. A black box won't tell them what the exact situation is that you're dealing with, only how you react, which, if you live in the city, you could be making quick lane changes and starts frequently... Now, I'm all for making our roads safer, but since you can't force this technology on people, I don't think it will change much. We'll all still be paying for the idiots out there that flip their ride on a dry highway because they didn't adhere to the 8 warning signs for the sharp curve ahead. I'm a FIRM believer that we need to start taking people's licenses away with stiffer penalties for driving without them based on poor driving techniques. NO ONE should have more than a few speeding tickets under their belt, nor should ANYONE have a reckless driving citation or multiple suspensions and still be able to drive. My girlfriend's mom was hit by a REPEAT drunk driver that almost killed her (this was before I'd met my GF). The guy had just gotten out of jail (for DD) and was apparently celebrating. He's still out and driving... Do we really need these people in our society? I think the insurance companies should push this R&D money toward preventing FRAUD, and stop insuring obviously BAD drivers (based on police record). THAT would bring our rates down.

I like what Germany does, where you have to pay a LOT, like $1200+ to even get a license, and keeping it is a privilege. Here it seems that you're guaranteed a license and almost no one can take it away...

I know **** happens and you gotta push the limit a little once in a while, either for thrills or to get to an interview or the hospital or whatever, but people need to use a little common sense when they open it up. A crowded highway is NOT the place, nor is your neighborhood. And if you want to take your ride off-road (like I do) and run it into trees or roll it down a cliff, that's on you. Sorry.

Yes!

I think there should be mandatory driver's ed for all drivers.
And not just the fluff stuff they walk you thru in high school.
Real classes with real emergency situations and real tests.

ohh... and also anyone making a turn without a turn signal.......
Shot on sight!!

:rulez::Racing:

Oh... and while I am at it...
A little rant for the states (like this one, SC) that take away driver's licenses when someone gets popped with a little weed....!!
WTF do those 2 things have in common???

I am not a big fan of yanking people's licenses for any reason.
Most people who have their license revoked do NOT stop driving.
They still have to get to work and the bank and the grocery store.
All taking their license away does is end up raising our insurance rates because they become a statistic if pulled over again.

I think fine people a decent amount for driving infractions and make them attend a real driving school.
Or in the case of the weed, do nothing... :pepper:

ROFLMFAO!

Oh, n.n.j., I have to (for once) disagree with you on the pot thing. As a 27.5 year career firefighter, I went to countless accidents over those years and saw first hand what being under the influence does. It doesn't matter what they were under the influence of, they just were. Impaired judgement is impaired judgement. Drank, smoked, or snorted...it all effects driving skills (most especially early year drivers-16, 17, etc).
Now I know a few *ahem* people who DO imbibe with what we're referencing here, but I wouldn't let 'em drive if I knew they were not totally sober for the job. I've been the DD for them for mucho years now too.

I just hope no one here ever has to deal with the loss of a loved one due to another persons inability to know how much they could handle. It'll change your mind in a hurry. (don't ask me how I know this)

:pepper:As for those a$$holes who haven't mastered the art of using that signal lever...I agree 100%!! SHOOT EM ALL!!

I'm not speaking of driving under the influence. Although my post does pretty much sound like it.

In South Carolina if you are caught with marijuana, even if youare walking down the street or standing in your own yard, you lose your license for 3 months. (Might be 6, but I think 3)

All this does it put more people without a license on the road, raise their insurance rates, and cost all of us money in the end.

God, I hate to be a downer and bring this up, but Pot is ILLEGAL!?!?!?! Not sure how that bares on a driver's license, but maybe they figure if you can't use good judgment and keep your fingers off of the ****, you can't use good judgment in not driving under the influence. Not holier than tho, nor straight edge, but seriously, I don't get the pot thing. I've seen it ruin lives. Have never tried it and don't think I ever will. I mean, the dumb ass questions and looks I've gotten from potheads are enough to make me say no... But anyway, I personally think punishments for all infractions need to be stiffer. In particular speeding through active construction zones. Not sure where it was, but on my way to CO I saw signs in one state at the beginning of a zone that said $350 minimum fine for speeding (or whatever the number for that county was). That was enough to put me under my usual 5 over in construction zones. I've been saying for years, if they'd post the fines, people would think twice (or 3 times). "Fines Doubled" doesn't to it when you don't know what that base fine is. But yeah, there's no way we're going to get around this issue and we'll just go in circles...

Yea, and.. no one said it wasn't.

Not sure how that bares on a driver's license,

Exactly. It doesn't.

Wow wild ass assumptions like that are what create these stupid laws in the first place.

Not holier than tho, nor straight edge,

So you must drink? Or do blow? Maybe a little X. Something to not be 'straight edged', but ohhh noooooo.....
Not the POT thingggg!!! Oh My no....

I don't get the pot thing. I've seen it ruin lives.

Really?? RUIN lives?

I mean, the dumb ass questions and looks I've gotten from potheads are enough to make me say no...

They probably felt the same way about the judgmental hypocrite giving them the dumb ass answers.

Since ya'll are talking about laws and not using turn signals, in VA along with the new fines, not using your turn signal is around a $350 fine now.

QUOTE]

Alcohol is legal, med's are legal, people drive after these also. I think out of everything pot is the least of problems on the road people who are high typically don't have the want to drive, you cant do it in public so your not driving home from a bar. People who smoke pot typically just mellow out and hang out, not go on drunken rampages (unless they are also drunk) I think pot being illegal is horrible. I have never seen a live ruined from pot, I have seen a lot of lives better with it. My husbands dad when he was doing chemo and so sick would throw up everything couldn't hold down anything. If he smoked, not only could he hold down food, he was in less pain (he was given the best of the best pain killers shy of knocking you out and still weren't helping), He was a little more upbeat. I think it was great for him. Also the "dumb questions and looks from potheads" Those people are just idiots before the pot there are many many people who smoke pot that are well off educated people and you would never guess it at all. You would be very surprised trust me.
