: Antenna mounting stud
Ollie18 09-21-2007, 09:52 PM Anyone know what the antenna mounting stud size is? Is it a male or femal antenna base? Please let me know.
Doe anyone have a close-ups of the antenna base with and without the antenna?
Thanks, Ollie
nearly.normal.jimmy 09-21-2007, 10:09 PM Can't take pics right now, but it is a female connection on the Jeep, BUT the threads are recessed way down.
The antenna I got came with a couple adaptors.
The one I used had like a 2 inch shaft with the threads on the last 1/2" inch.
You had to put the shaft down the hole (easy everybody) before the threads made contact down inside.
This is the one I got
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=008&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=180153004752&rd=1
I prefer that kind over the flexible stubby because it always seems like those flexible ones end up bent by the wind and your stubby looks flaccid. (EASY everybody)
I can snap some pics and get a measurment tomorrow. (Its dark at 10pm here ;) )
Jim
nearly.normal.jimmy 09-21-2007, 10:13 PM This is the company that sold the antenna thru eBay
http://www.antennax.com/
They were quick and friendly to respond to my emails about fit, maybe they would let you know the size adaptors included in the Liberty kits... (?)
it was officially a Lberty antenna I bought
Ollie18 09-21-2007, 10:20 PM Thanks Jim. I'm actually planning on buying a stubby...2"-5" max. I do not care too much about reception as I listen to Ipod and SAT anyways. If push comes to shove I will install a windshield antenna around the rear window. But this RC style antenna BS will be the first thing to go.
Please snap some pix tomorrow when you have some time. I just want to make sure I by the right stubby...
Thanks again!
Wheezy 09-22-2007, 12:03 AM Heh, it appears that Jim and I now have the same antenna. ;)
Here's some pics:

Oddly enough, I had to use the Ford adapter that it came with to fit into the antenna mount... (It had the exact same thread pattern as the stock Jeep one).
Ollie18 09-22-2007, 05:50 AM Thank you! This already makes a HUGE difference. Very nice. Thanks for the pic. Any pix of just the base without the antenna on it?
Does anyone know what the actually stud/thread size is?
Sorry for all the questions...my Pat is still 4-7 weeks away, but it is crazy how my wheels are already spinning in regards to things that I will be changing/adding.
quasimodem51 09-22-2007, 08:45 AM May I ask, what is the benefit of using this antenna over the OEM antenna?
Ollie18 09-22-2007, 08:54 AM For the most part cosmetic. The antenna that Jim and Wheezy have on their Pat is shorter and black, compared to the long silver stock one. Recpetion between the 2 should be equal. The one I am looking into getting might have less recpetion, but that's something a rear window antenna will compensate for.

Randoo-N-CJ 09-22-2007, 03:23 PM A nod of thanks to you guys for posting the pics and giving the website info. The pics sold me on it and will be ordering this in the next couple of days. :smiley_thumbs_up:
I'm doing for the vanity side of it to be honest. I just think the tall silver one looks out of place. I'll worry about reception later.:icon_rolleyes:.
Pics will follow, if needed, once I get it stuck on.
nearly.normal.jimmy 09-22-2007, 03:27 PM Heh, it appears that Jim and I now have the same antenna. ;)
Close.
I don't have the bulb shape at the bottom.
Ollie18 09-22-2007, 04:48 PM Here is what I will be going for...just gotta figure out which adapter I will need. Either one of the 2:

or
http://www.mangowalk.com/images/400/30102-02.jpg
Might not be everyones cup of tea, but I HATE external antennas as it is...if the reception really sux big time, I will install a window wire mount on the inside of the rear window.
Can anyone provide the diameter of the stud in mm?
nearly.normal.jimmy 09-23-2007, 01:01 PM Stock antenna
849
I wrapped a bread twist tie around the threads and it reads 19mm in circumference +/- 2mm.
The diameter is 5mm +/- 1mm.
fwiw I posted a pic of my antenna here (http://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/showpost.php?p=24499&postcount=17)
Ollie18 09-23-2007, 02:41 PM Ah crap! Now what would posses Jeep to have such a long antenna mount. Geez! ARGH! But, nonetheless, I will figure it out how to put a stubby on there...even if I have to have the original mounting stud tig-welded to the stubby...And if push comes to shove, and nothing really works, I will probably end up getting the one you have Jim! Thanks for the pic...I need a drink now after seeing this 'cluster'!
nearly.normal.jimmy 09-23-2007, 02:45 PM Ah crap! Now what would posses Jeep to have such a long antenna mount. !
Yea exactly. That's what I was trying (poorly) to convey in my shaft down the hole description above.
A pic is worth a couple of words for sure.
antennax.com where I got mine sent a bag of about 3 or 4 different types of converters.
they had them with the shaft that long and then either a male or female on the other end.
Maybe they can hook you up with just a little bag of converters.
Jim
Ollie18 09-23-2007, 02:55 PM Thanks Jim. So you got the Liberty antenna? So the 3-4 adapters came with the purchase, if I understand this correctly?
Thanks, Ollie
nearly.normal.jimmy 09-23-2007, 03:37 PM Thanks Jim. So you got the Liberty antenna? So the 3-4 adapters came with the purchase, if I understand this correctly?

Correct. Purchased on eBay but from antennaX.
I tossed the connectors I did not need but there were safely 3 extra of them, maybe 4.
Ollie18 09-24-2007, 10:16 AM Cool Jim - I placed the order last night, and will see what comes in. Until then I will hold ordering the stubby antenna to make sure I really get multiple adapters.
(PS: Just got a call today from the dealer...Status D1...and will be shipped 10/2...and I already got my VIN! WOOOT WOOT!!!)
Wheezy 09-24-2007, 12:39 PM Jim, did you tighten your new antenna by hand or with a wrench? I'm just wondering how that Liberty antenna attaches (if it's like the Patriot's that needs to be removed using a wrench). Also, couldn't you just get those from the dealership if they're Liberty parts? (or not because it isn't Mopar?)

I wrapped it with a towel so as not to scratch it and used a wrench to snug.
It's not an official Liberty antenna. It is an aftermarket that has the right base and set of connectors to attach to a Liberty.
They have the same antenna listed for several vehicles that have that type of mount.
Moadey 05-18-2008, 05:24 PM I have a question, Recently bought my patriot, never used the radio, always listened to my ipod through the aux connector. Then one day i decided to i wanted to listen to the radio, switched over to FM, and nothing. WTF....did my jeep somehow come without an antenna? Or am I just an idiot (which is very possible!)
Farrel79 05-18-2008, 06:14 PM I changed mine and had to cut new threads on the replacement antenna stud - just went out and checked the OE antenna - it's a 10-24 thread.
LiquidMack44 05-23-2008, 11:53 PM I have to admit I'm not a fan of the stock antenna either. When I go through the car wash they always take it off, and that is just asking for some extra scratches. It just looks out of place. Thanks for all the pics and the website; that really narrows it down for me.:smiley_thumbs_up:

I've got the same one as you that I got at Crappy Tire. Definitely looks much better with no reception loss from what I can tell. Weird because mine came with a Chrysler adapter and that one worked fine.
