: Undercoating

I haven't check all the forums but I would like to get opinions on undercoating.

Is it recommendable to get undercoating for Pat in Canada? Salt is still being used on roads during winter and I seldom go to car wash during this season. I wondering if it will trigger early/untimely corrosion/rusting.

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend it... Mine is not even 2 years old and it's showing surface rust all under.

Anyone in the States know who does a good job at undercoating?

to have my Pat undercoated and hope the $600 it cost is well spent because I usually keep my vehicles to the bitter end.

Dealership advised that under car oiling would negate the warranty--something to do with the electronics being damaged.

Undercoating and under car oiling are a bit different.

The dealerships themselves offer undercoating and no moving parts are actually covered. No warranty risk in undercoating at all. Even if they wanted to void your warranty they would have to prove the undercoating was the source of the issue which it would not be.

Some type of anti rust treatments involve using a thin oil based spray/film. This is different from undercoating as it is not a thicker tar. This form of rust protection only lasts a short period of time.

I got the Ziebart ($160.00 U.S), light black undercoat to keep the surface rust away. They spray all of the underside parts that they are allowed to per the manufacturer. They did a great job!

I did not get any of the inside body panel rust proofing (no holes drilled).
They only sprayed the bottom black.

I plan on using "Fluid Film" spray and doing the inside of the body panels myself. I have identified enough holes and access areas around the vehicle to sufficiently coat the inside of the major panels and tailgate hatch on my own. This will be the rust prevention for the inner body panels.
It is probably overkill but I want to do it. (did the same to previous vehicles)
I live in the Rust Belt of the U.S.

If you live here in the westcoast, I wouldnt suggest undercoating, it rains so much here you nothing ever rusts everything stays so clean. , and we dont have much salt or sand on the roads. Vancouverites hate purchasing out of provice vehicles, esp. Alberta vehicles, they have lots of rust.
If you actually take it out on the trails and it has opportunity for lots of mud and dirt bildup then yeah... why not give it a little TLC.

I'm debating getting the undercoating as well - I live in Alberta so maybe I should.

If you expect to encounter salted roads where you live, any coating is better than no coating. It won't stop the rust, but it will help minimize it and prolong the beauty of your vehicle. I went for the undercoating.

I am very satisfied with oil based 'undercoatings'. I have used it on three cars for the past ten years.
I find it more cost effective than the dealer offered systems. It does not crack or peel.

I got mine undercoated by the dealer at purchase and they used a wax based spray rather than oil.

The bright side of being wax based is it should stick better IMO.

Maybe someone can shed light on this....

The Krown website says they charge $125 for a complete oil spray application that lasts 1 year...

While the Ziebart website offer their complete protection package for $450

Surely there are key differences between the two applications that would warrant such a price difference!

Is the Ziebart application a once-in-a-lifetime application?

According to the Ziebart websites, they have both an annual service (oil based) and a "permanent" service that has a ten year warranty.

I've been trying to get in contact with their local store, but they don't seem to need the business...

I just bought a used 08 Pat originally from Quebec (came with snows on it - mandatory in La Belle Provence).

It doesn't appear to ever have been undercoated.

I'll be sure to get it coated at my local Krown man before the winter.

Anyone ever try rust proofing from Shine Factory?

I got mine done at the dealer too, 599 i think it was for undercoating that was rated for 6 yrs and paint protection for 3 yrs for surface rust. I didnt think it was a bad idea cause there were some good surface scratches in the paint from the previous owner

I oiled our new Patriot for the first time this week, I use the thick runny oil, I like how it gets everywhere. I drilled 9 holes into the Jeep, and I couldn't believe how think the rocker panels are under the front doors. It was almost 1 inch thick!
