: Custom Double Din Install
LANZEN 09-09-2007, 01:15 PM Hello,
Just thought i would show everyone how my install worked out. Overall I am satsified with it, however the color didn't match exactly. I am going to try and find a closer match or perhaps cover it with some silver carbon fiber vinyl.

Dmentd_Dan 09-09-2007, 01:20 PM Nice, very nice. Great idea on placing the camera in the hitch! I also really like how you were able to keep the cubby and have a double din radio! wish jeep would have done the same with the factory nav unit.
Copper 09-09-2007, 01:38 PM Where did you get all that nifty gear, and for how much?
LANZEN 09-09-2007, 01:56 PM I think spent about $700 for everything. I also got a 80GB hard drive im my glove box with alot of .AVI's on it. I still have to purchase an IPOD adpater for it but they are only 30 or 40 dollars.
chiefburritt 09-09-2007, 02:04 PM Nice job! How will you apply the carbon to the face plate? And where will you get the carbon? Could this be used for those pesky scratch prone areas on the doors everyone seems to be getting?
Wheezy 09-09-2007, 02:05 PM Wow that looks great! What kind of Nav system is that and was it easy to wire in the camera?
LANZEN 09-09-2007, 02:23 PM Well it's not real carbon it is vinyl laminate resembling carbon and it is self-adhesive. I saw it on ebay for $5 or so for a 24"x12" piece. Also it is a JVC kw-avx800, it doesn't have NAV yet. That is the next piece I am going to buy.
dgdreslin23 09-11-2007, 11:04 PM This is exactly what I am trying to accomplish on my patriot. Is this really hard to do or is it just worth paying someone to do it. I have alot of experience installing all kinds of lights on vehicles but no nothing when it comes to radios and navigation systems.
LANZEN 09-13-2007, 08:35 PM It wasn't too hard. It was more time consuming than anything. I was being careful not to remove too much material and leave a big gap around the head unit itself. Here are some pic’s of the carbon fiber vinyl. I figured I would use the black to experiment with since I can get it locally and buy some silver carbon fiber later if this works out.

hey LANZEN, i am particularly interested in your key fobs... did you add power locks to your pat? where did you get your key fobs? pretty much i would like to know about this part of the installation exclusively (the alarm/key). thanks!
pistol peter 09-20-2007, 01:42 PM Where did you buy the carbon fiber vinyl at??? It looks nice, good job...
Ollie18 09-20-2007, 01:56 PM hey LANZEN, i am particularly interested in your key fobs... did you add power locks to your pat? where did you get your key fobs? pretty much i would like to know about this part of the installation exclusively (the alarm/key). thanks!
yeah - same here. More info on the Fobs please...they look like VW fobs.
LANZEN 09-22-2007, 11:14 PM My patriot came with the power locks. I bought the key fobs/alarm from ebay, but i am disappointed with the quality. After a couple of weeks of flipping the key there is some play or slop in it. I got 2 keys cut at the local hardware store and grinded the heads off with a dremel. I also had to buy 2 transponders from autotransponder.com. Just do a search on ebay for "flip key car alarm" or I found this place http://www.rclick.co.uk
I don't know if the quality is any better though. Oh, I also need a 1K and 100 OHM resistor for it work with the factory power locks. As far as the vinyl i bought at a local sign shop.
JAMESG1881 09-23-2007, 01:38 AM Which CD player did you have factory?
The 6 disc or the single disc?
Are both 6 disc and single disc center consoles the same in size?
I want to put the Alpine w205 double din in but want to make sure there are no problems in doing this.
What type of external hard drive setup do you have in order for it work on the double din screen that you have?
LANZEN 09-23-2007, 10:32 AM I had the single disc. I believe there are both the same size, not 100% sure. I was going to go with w205 but I don't think it has the dual zone function. The hard drive I have is just an 80GB external 2.5in that is formatted as FAT32. You have to check what file types the head unit will support though. Alot of the units will only play audio files. My JVC is DIVX certified so it will play most video files.
1miracle2 10-09-2007, 12:30 PM Wow, that is a smooth job LANZEN!
I just purchased the Kenwood DDX7015 that is a double din...
your work looks like you did no modification for that double din to fit?
I may have missed that on this site but I just did a search and found this thread.
any way did you have to trim out any thing to get that double din to fit?
I have the 6 disc and it looks exactly the same size, including the half moon knobs!
I can't figure out how you fixed those cuts on where the knobs were? I've done several mobile audio installs but you're going beyond on the look and feel! It's very nice!
Also can you provide any diagrams of how you have your external HDD set up/connected? My Kenwood looks like I will be able to hook up a MAC mini or barebones system if I want. I'm just curious how you set up your stuff as your work looks so clean man! VERY NICE!!!
1miracle2 10-29-2007, 06:52 PM Lanzen does you HU stick out a little bit like about a quarter of an inch? I have my radio installed so that the bezel needs to be removed before the radio can be pulled where as usually you can insert the key's to unlock the radio from it's metal sleeve. Are you even using a sleeve?
LANZEN 10-29-2007, 07:39 PM 1miracle2, the top of the HU is flush but the bottom sticks out about 1/4" to 3/8" because of the way the HU is made. I am not using a bezel because it took too much room and then it would have covered up my little cubby hole thing. I didn't use a sleeve either, I just used 4 1 1/2" L-brackets to mount it in the opening
Sgtarky 10-31-2007, 10:14 PM lanzen are you still in 10th mountain?
LANZEN 11-01-2007, 10:40 PM yeah, I am fenced
jessi 12-30-2007, 12:28 AM does anyone know where there might be a hole in the firewall so that i could run a 4 gage wire for my amplifier.
ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED

right hand side from inside the car, its where the line for the window washer goes through to the back window, there is a large grommet.
Driver side (Aus spec) or Passenger side (US Spec) in the foot well
or follow the line from the washer bottle in the engine bay.

jbarstow 12-30-2007, 10:42 AM How easy was it to remove the radio trim...I have been looking to do some different things...What tools did you need to remove it?
do a search, or check out nearlynormaljimmy's site
its not hard, just time consuming
sleeper22 02-17-2008, 02:59 PM I would like to know how the key fob works. Will the keyfob work the remote start as well? Is there any special instructions?
UN4GTBL 02-17-2008, 05:20 PM single disc and 6 disc radios are the same size. I had a single disc first and then upgraded to a 6 disc with cassette player later on and it was a very simple change. I too cutomized my dash, (its a caliber dash tho) but i just made a door for the cubby to keep stuff in there. THe carbon fiber vinyl, looks good too. The paint os tough to match, so i ended up doing more than just painting my cubby door, i ended up painting more as i had scratches too all over it!
